When Stacy Garrop first heard the Appalachian folk song Silver Dagger at a folk festival, the simplicity of the melody and its cautionary love tale enthralled her, leading to several years researching the song. She discovered dozens of variants of the song’s text, melody, and title. Garrop’s trio is inspired by two versions of the folk song, as well as motives from a third version — her exquisite setting of the folk tunes creates a fascinating 5-minute work. Thomas Simaku: Silver

Silver was expertly composed by Thomas Simaku. First published in 1995, Silver was commissioned by the New London Children's Choir, with funds provided by the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust. The piece received its debut performance in Spring 1996, at John's Smith Square, performed by the New London Children's Choir and conducted by Ronald Corp.For over a decade, Albanian-born British composer, Thomas Simaku?s music has been reaching audiences all over Europe and the USA, winning a number of prestigious awards such as the Serocki International Prize, AHRC Fellowship, DAAD Award, as well as an Honourable Mention at the Musical Personalities International Competition. Many notable performances include, among others, those given by Kreutzer Quartet, English Northern Philharmonia, European Union Chamber Orchestra, the New London Orchestra, Amsterdam New Music Ensemble, Tokyo Phonosphere Musicale, Capricorn Ensemble, Norwegian Medieval Trio and the Austrian 'Ticom' Ensemble.Simaku?s style combines avant-gardism and modality in his own way, often with a deeply convincing inner strength, structural integrity and impressive character.

Silver Celebration

Silver Celebration

Commissioned by the Richardson (TX) Community Band, Silver Celebration commemorates 25 years of service by their conductor, George Jones. The work combines elements of traditional march style with the bravura of epic film scores, resulting in a piece that is both festive and celebratory in nature. The opening is a rousing 6/8 march featuring various sections of the band and exciting cross rhythms, and then contrasted with a beautifully flowing lyric statement. A brief percussion feature leads to the final section, recapping the opening themes with a flourish and dramatic appeal.
