The Microbiome and the Brain - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Microbiome and the Brain - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Brain related disorders are among the most challenging health issues of our time. The development of effective therapeutic and preventive strategies for these disorders relies on a comprehensive understanding of the underlying causative mechanisms. And, until recently, these mechanisms have remained somewhat elusive. The newly discovered pivotal role of the intestinal microbiome in brain health, functionality, and resistance to disease is revolutionizing neuroscience. The Microbiome and the Brain, through the contributions of some of the most forward thinking researchers and clinicians in the field, comprehensively reveals the leading edge of our understanding of the fundamental role of gut microbes and their metabolites in a wide array of seemingly diverse brain issues including Alzheimer’s disease, autism, multiple sclerosis, and mood disorders. In addition, mechanisms defining these relationships are explored along with a presentation of the state-of-the-art as it relates to interpretation of relevant laboratory assessments. Finally, novel therapeutic opportunities, derived from this exciting science are presented. Readers will learn: - - The highly validated relationship between alterations of gut microbes and their metabolites, and risk for Alzheimer’s disease. - - - The important link between autism and intestinal dysbiosis. - - - Appropriate interpretation of available laboratory assessments of the intestinal microbiome. - - - The potential role of fecal microbial transplant in neurological diseases. - - - The influence of diet and other lifestyle choices on the microbiome as it relates to brain health and functionality. -

Policing the Media - David D. Perlmutter - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Policing the Media - David D. Perlmutter - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Policing the Media is an investigation into one of the paradoxes of the mass-mediated age. Issues, events, and people that we "see" most on our television screens are often those that we understand the least. David Perlmutter examined this issue as it relates to one of the most frequently portrayed groups of people on television: police officers. Policing the Media is a report on the ethnography of a police department, derived from the author′s experience riding on patrol with officers and joining the department as a reserve policeman. Drawing upon interviews, personal observations, and the author′s black-and-white photographs of cops and the "clients," Perlmutter describes the lives and philosophies of street patrol officers. He finds that cops hold ambiguous attitudes toward their television comrades, for much of TV copland is fantastic and preposterous. Even those programs that boast gritty realism little resemble actual police work. Moreover, the officers perceive that the public′s attitudes toward law enforcement and crime are directly (and largely nefariously) influenced by mass media. This in turn, he suggests, influences the way that they themselves behave and "perform" on the street, and that unreal and surreal expectations of them are propagated by television cop shows. This cycle of perceptual influence may itself profoundly impact the contemporary criminal justice system, on the street, in the courts, and in the hearts and minds of ordinary people.

The Leadership Brain - David A. Sousa - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Leadership Brain - David A. Sousa - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

How can you use the growing body of research on how the brain learns to become a more effective leader? Cognitive neuroscientists are gaining greater insights into how the brain interacts with and learns from the environment. Now David A. Sousa, one of the foremost experts in translating this research into classroom practice, examines the brain-compatible leadership practices that sustain effective teaching and learning. The Leadership Brain provides a new model for a whole-brain approach to educational leadership. Examining what we know about the adult brain, and how to apply these lessons to effective school leadership and team management, this powerful resource provides you with the necessary tools to: - - Understand the differences in learning and retention, left and right hemispheric preferences, higher-order thinking, and the nature of creativity - - Initiate and lead productive change within your school - - Effectively shape and manage school culture - - Address the call for ethical and spiritual leadership - - Understand how thinking habits influence our actions, especially with problem solving and conflict resolution - - Reduce misconceptions about students with disabilities, gifted, and minority students - - Use information about the influence that modern society has on student learning and their different expectations The Leadership Brain includes valuable self-assessment tools, resources, and practical applications that will help instructional leaders develop a modern, creative, team-centered school where all students and teachers can reach their full potential.

The Trickster Brain - David Williams - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

Until recently, scientific and literary cultures have existed side-by-side but most often in parallel universes, without connection. The Trickster Brain: Neuroscience, Evolution, and Nature by David Williams addresses the premise that humans are a biological species stemming from the long process of evolution, and that we do exhibit a universal human nature, given to us through our genes. From this perspective, literature is shown to be a product of our biological selves. By exploring central ideas in neuroscience, evolutionary biology, linguistics, music, philosophy, ethics, religion, and history, Williams shows that it is the circuitry of the brain’s hard-wired dispositions that continually create similar tales around the world: “archetypal” stories reflecting ancient tensions that arose from our evolutionary past and the very construction of our brains. The book asserts that to truly understand literature, one must look at the biological creature creating it. By using the lens of science to examine literature, we can see how stories reveal universal aspects of the biological mind. The Trickster character is particularly instructive as an archetypal character who embodies a raft of human traits and concerns, for Trickster is often god, devil, musical, sexual, silver tongued, animal, and human at once, treading upon the moral dictates of culture. Williams brings together science and the humanities, demonstrating a critical way of approaching literature that incorporates scientific thought.
