Preventing Medical Device Recalls - Dev G. Raheja - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

A critical and often overlooked aspect of preventing medical device recalls is the ability to implement systems thinking. Although systems thinking won’t prevent every mistake, it remains one of the most effective tools for evaluating hidden risks and discovering robust solutions for eliminating those risks. Based on the author’s extensive experience in the medical device, aerospace, and manufacturing engineering industries, Preventing Medical Device Recalls presents a detailed structure for systems thinking that can help to prevent costly device recalls. Based on Dr. W. Edwards Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge, this structure can help medical device designers and manufacturers exceed their customers’ expectations for quality and safety. This book is among the first to demonstrate how to control safety risks—from specifications all the way through to safely retiring products without harm to the environment. Supplying an accessible overview of medical device requirements and the science of safety, it explains why risk analysis must start with product specification and continue throughout the product life cycle. Covering paradigms for proactive thinking and doing, the text details methods that readers can implement during the specification writing, product design, and product development phases to prevent recalls. It also includes numerous examples from the author’s experience in the medical device, consumer, and aerospace industries. Even in healthcare, where compliance with standards is at its highest level, more patients die from medical mistakes each week than would be involved in a jumbo jet crash. With coverage that includes risk assessment and risk management, this book provides you with an understanding of how mishaps happen so you can account for unexpected events and design devices that are free of costly recalls.

Heart Valve Surgery - Pavel Zacek - Bog - Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG - Plusbog.dk

Heart Valve Surgery - Pavel Zacek - Bog - Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG - Plusbog.dk

T e four heart valves reside in the center of the heart. T is indicates their crucial role in cardiac performance. Fau- less function of the valves is a prerequisite for unidir- tional forward movement of the blood, and such function is necessary to support the ef orts of the cardiac atria and ventricles. Healthy heart valves function gracefully and of er mechanical durability. Bioengineers have to marvel at the biomechanical evolution of these perfectly placed valves. Heart valves can be involved in pathological processes, however, and only then do we realize just how indispensable they really are. At one time, serious valve disorders used to be a matter of life and death for patients. Only in recent decades have surgeons been able to reverse the ominous course of heart valve disease and of er patients a quality of life and life span comparable to that of healthy persons. T e story of this ef ort began approximately 100 years ago, and today heart valve surgery is a substantial subspecialty of cardiac surgery, with accumulated experience in indications, procedures, risks, and outcomes. T e aim of this book is to present a richly illustrated compendium of the present knowledge related to heart valve surgery, based on the clinical expertise of the authors as well as the newest treatment modalities. T e authors thank Dr. Alireeza Matloobi from the Mayo Clinic for his help in preparating the book.

Elementary Semiconductor Device Physics - Kazuya Masu - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Elementary Semiconductor Device Physics - Kazuya Masu - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This book by two leading experts on integrated circuit design adopts an untraditional approach to introducing semiconductor devices to beginners. The authors use circuit theory to provide a digestible explanation of energy band theory and understanding of energy band diagrams. After briefly summarizing the basics of semiconductors, the authors describe semiconductor devices from a circuit theoretic point of view, making the book especially suitable for circuit design students and engineers. Further to the emphasis on the circuit perspective, the book then uses circuit theory to introduce readers to the famously indigestible “energy bands” of crystalline solids. Additionally, the book explains how to read physics from “energy band diagrams” of semiconductor devices in great detail. The key to appreciating the real power of energy band diagrams is shown to lie in the understanding of the concept of the “quasi-Fermi levels,” introduced in 1949 by William Shockley but remaining elusive to date and therefore often omitted from energy band diagrams. To rectify this, some of the energy band diagrams presented in this book, complete with quasi-Fermi levels, were drawn using a device simulator (a.k.a. technology computer-aided design; TCAD), offering quantitative information about device physics. The book could, therefore, also serve as a hands-on course text in TCAD-drawn band diagram reading. Because no prior exposure to quantum mechanics is required and the book does not attempt to teach it, this book is ideal for students in various disciplines who may or may not be specializing in semiconductor devices. The numerous practical examples of reading TCAD-based energy-band diagrams are also invaluable to practicing semiconductor device engineers.

Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Safety - Sonia Macleod - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Safety - Sonia Macleod - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This book examines how regulatory and liability mechanisms have impacted upon product safety decisions in the pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors in Europe, the USA and beyond since the 1950s. Thirty-five case studies illustrate the interplay between the regulatory regimes and litigation. Observations from medical practice have been the overwhelming means of identifying post-marketing safety issues. Drug and device safety decisions have increasingly been taken by public regulators and companies within the framework of the comprehensive regulatory structure that has developed since the 1960s. In general, product liability cases have not identified or defined safety issues, and function merely as compensation mechanisms. This is unsurprising as the thresholds for these two systems differ considerably; regulatory action can be triggered by the possibility that a product might be harmful, whereas establishing liability in litigation requires proving that the product was actually harmful. As litigation normally post-dates regulatory implementation, the ‘private enforcement’ of public law has generally not occurred in these sectors. This has profound implications for the design of sectoral regulatory and liability regimes, including associated features such as extended liability law, class actions and contingency fees. This book forms a major contribution to the academic debate on the comparative utility of regulatory and liability systems, on public versus private enforcement, and on mechanisms of behaviour control.

Regulation Fixtures in Hydronic Heating Installations - Damian Piotr Muniak - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Regulation Fixtures in Hydronic Heating Installations - Damian Piotr Muniak - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

The book focuses on design and computational issues related to fixtures and armatures in hydronic heating installations, especially regulation valves, their selection, operating principles, types and construction. The analysis is complemented by connection diagrams, drawings, photos of the valves and computational examples of their selection and operation parameters when used in a pipework and a controlled object, like a radiator. It also discusses issues related to the so-called valve authority, one of the main parameters determining the quality of the valve regulation process. Further, it includes an extensive theoretical framework along with a detailed mathematical analysis and proposes new algorithms, which have been verified and confirmed experimentally. Based on this analysis, the book presents the author''s analytical approach for sizing a regulation valve, as well as an innovative design solution for a regulation valve without the limitations of the valves currently available on the market. Lastly, it introduces a new verified method of calculating the valve pre-setting. Intended for engineers dealing with heating issues, scientists and students studying environmental engineering, energetics and related fields, the book is also useful for lecturers, designers, and those operating heating installations, as well as authors of computer programs for thermal and hydraulic balancing of heating installations.
