Analysis of Structures by Matrix Methods

Analysis of Structures by Matrix Methods

The analysis of engineering structures has always been a challenge to engineers and in the past classical methods were used to quantify the response of a structure to the applied forces. These methods were suitable for the analysis of relatively simple structures that could be solved by hand calculations but complicated structures had to be simplified to a model that could be solved by classical methods. The results however were approximations depending on the modifications made to the structure as well as on the experience and judgement of the analyst. These limitations led to the derivation of the slope-deflection equations for continuous beams and later formulation of the moment distribution method. With the advent of electronic computers systematic procedures for the analysis of structures have been developed. Computer programs help in obtaining required solutions to the simultaneous equations in the case of structures where the number of equations is large and hand calculations are not suitable. The detailed work with simultaneous equations can be made in a general and compact form by using matrix notation leading to the development of the matrix methods of structural analysis. This book deals with the analysis of engineering structures made of skeletal members and covers the type of structures that are commonly used in practice. It builds up on the subject matter dealing with matrix algebra analysis of bar elements special forms of members stability and vibration of structures and pin-connected rigid-plane and 3D frames. It treats the important step of formulating the overall stiffness matrix of a structure in a systematic and straightforward manner and uses simple mathematical approaches wherever possible. The book is reader friendly particularly for beginners who have no prior knowledge in this subject and can also be used as a textbook by undergraduate and postgraduate students studying for a degree in civil structural or mechanical engineering as well as by practicing engineers who have not studied this subject but are using software packages that deal with the analysis of engineering structures. | Analysis of Structures by Matrix Methods

Semi-Critical Assisted Extraction Applications and Commercialization in Biotechnology Food and Pharmacy

Semi-Critical Assisted Extraction Applications and Commercialization in Biotechnology Food and Pharmacy

In the past three decades great efforts have been made to develop new methods for the extraction of natural molecules. Improved extraction technologies have garnered scientific interest as they have helped in understanding how mass and energy transfer exhibited for a solvent and solute during a chemical extraction can be used as physical chemistry parameters leading to the modeling and design of new advantageous equipment. In situ data collected during a chemically assisted experiment is useful in a variety of scientific and technological applications especially in generating extractors that are safer more efficient and offer true opportunities to scale them up in a wide range of materials (among stainless steel). This book compiles empirical and traditional extraction methods applied to cutting-edge critical extraction research in the areas of food science phytochemistry pharmacy fragrance cosmetology and folk medicine. It presents extraction technology as an interdisciplinary area that applies the principles of physics and chemistry as tools to develop engineered models for the construction of more advanced extraction devices. It includes examples and problems related to data treatment in normal laboratory research work that will facilitate undergraduate- and graduate-level students as well as operators working in the area in solving real problems. | Semi-Critical Assisted Extraction Applications and Commercialization in Biotechnology Food and Pharmacy

Multifragmentation in Heavy-Ion Reactions Theory and Experiments

Multifragmentation in Heavy-Ion Reactions Theory and Experiments

This book provides a collection of reviews of some of the recent developments in nuclear physics research at intermediate energies from across the globe. It especially focuses on the most essential aspects such as multifragmentation and associated phenomena in nuclear collisions with the incident energy region between a few MeV and several hundreds of MeV/nucleon. The topic of the book—multifragmentation—was chosen based on the fact that all heavy-ion collisions revolve around a fragmenting system which is also thought to have a link to phase transitions. One unique and valuable dimension of this book is that it has brought together the research of several experts working in the field of intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions in various renowned laboratories of the world. It provides a thorough review of the recent developments in various related phenomena especially multifragmentation observed at the intermediate-energy range both theoretically and experimentally. It extensively discusses the concept of nuclear symmetry energy which is important for the nuclear physics and astrophysics communities. In addition the book identifies potential research directions and technologies that will drive future innovations. It will serve as a valuable reference for a larger audience including students who wish to pursue a career in nuclear physics and astrophysics. | Multifragmentation in Heavy-Ion Reactions Theory and Experiments
