The History of Science

The History of Science

Science is one of the main features of the contemporary world and shapes our lives to an extent that has no precedents in history. Yet science as we know it today is the outcome of contingent social processes and its global success is far from self-explanatory. How did it happen? How did science emerge in history and became the most authoritative source of knowledge available in late modern societies? This set of volumes addresses these crucial questions through a selection of exemplary publications spanning antiquity to the present day. The reader will find an effective survey of the best scholarship in this rapidly growing field and a map of the main revolutions as well as the long-term continuities that have characterized our understanding the world and our attempts to control it. The collection brings together areas of inquiry that have become increasingly distant and specialized such as the history of antique science or Cold War studies within broader narratives of the making of the modern world. They also reassess the traditional assumption of the exclusively Greek and Western origins of modern science situating relevant knowledge practices and artefacts within the global networks that sustained them: in ancient as well as in modern times. The gathered materials address key historiographical issues such as the relationship between science magic and religion; the role of science in nation-building processes; and the relationship between science and technology. | The History of Science

Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering 5-Volume Set

Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering 5-Volume Set

This new five-volume set brings together innovative research new concepts and novel developments in applied chemistry and chemical engineering. It covers an array of topics with the volumes covering: Mathematical and Analytical Techniques Principles Methodology and Evaluation Methods Interdisciplinary Approaches to Theory and Modeling with Applications Experimental Techniques and Methodical Developments Research Methodologies in Modern Chemistry and Applied Science Volume 1 addresses new informatics tools for applied chemistry and computer science. It presents a modern approach to modeling and calculation and also looks at experimental design in applied chemistry and chemical engineering. The volume discusses the developments of advanced chemical products and respective tools to characterize and predict the chemical material properties and behavior. Volume 2 focuses on three main aspects: principles methodology and evaluation methods. It presents a selection of chapters on recent developments of theoretical mathematical and computational conceptions as well as chapters on modeling and simulation of specific research themes covering applied chemistry and chemical engineering. This book attempts to bridge the gap between classical analysis and modern applications. Volume 3 reviews introduces and develops the mathematical models that are most frequently encountered in sophisticated chemical engineering domains. The volume provides a collection of models illustrating the power and richness of the mathematical sciences in supplying insight into the operation of important real-world systems. It fills a gap within modeling texts focusing on applications across a broad range of disciplines. Volume 4 provides a detailed yet easy-to-follow treatment of various techniques useful for characterizing the structure and properties of engineering materials. This timely volume provides an overview of new methods and presents experimental research in applied chemistry using modern approaches. Each chapter describes the principle of the respective method as well as the detailed procedures of experiments with examples of actual applications and then goes on to demonstrate the advantage and disadvantages of each physical technique. Thus readers will be able to apply the concepts as described in the book to their own experiments. Volume 5 is designed to fulfill the requirements of scientists and engineers who wish to be able to carry out experimental research in chemistry and applied science using modern methods. Each chapter describes the principle of the respective method as well as the detailed procedures of experiments with examples of actual applications. Thus readers will be able to apply the concepts as described in the book to their own experiments. | Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering 5-Volume Set

Health Psychology

Health Psychology

In today’s sick world the application of psychological research and methods to issues about and around health could not be more important. Health psychologists pursue ambitious goals including: the promotion and maintenance of health; the prevention and management of illness; the improvement of healthcare systems; and the formulation of rational health policies. And they seek to understand dizzyingly difficult questions such as: how do people adapt to chronic illness? What factors influence healthy eating? How is stress linked to heart disease? And why do so many patients ignore medical advice and prescriptions? As research in and around health psychology burgeons as never before this new four-volume collection from Routledge’s acclaimed Critical Concepts in Psychology series meets the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of a rapidly growing and ever more complex corpus of literature. Edited by two leading scholars the collection gathers foundational and canonical work together with innovative and cutting-edge applications and interventions. With a full index together with a comprehensive introduction newly written by the editors which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context Health Psychology will be particularly useful as a one-stop database allowing scattered and often fugitive material to be easily located. It will also be welcomed as a crucial tool permitting rapid access to less familiar—and sometimes overlooked—texts. For researchers and advanced students it is a vital one-stop research and reference resource.

Philosophy of Emotion

Philosophy of Emotion

Emotions punctuate almost all significant events in our lives but their nature causes and consequences are among the least well understood aspects of human experience. It is easier to express emotions than to describe them and even harder to analyse and explain them. Despite their apparent familiarity emotions are an extremely subtle and complex topic. Unfortunately the topic was neglected by philosophers and scientists in the past. In recent decades however interest in the emotions has grown considerably among scholars and students from many disciplines as well as among the public at large. If there is to be any progress in this theoretically and practically important field not only is a broad philosophical examination of basic concepts and issues essential (drawing both on analytical philosophy and phenomenology) but also an interdisciplinary approach that combines philosophical analysis with other types of scientific research (such as psychology anthropology history sociology and brain sciences). The clarification of basic emotional concepts as well as the unification of linguistic usages across disciplines and natural languages are necessary for integrating the growing body of interdisciplinary emotional research (e. g. does the traditional German Gefühl correspond to feeling or to emotion? and what about Stimmung?). The contemporary philosophy of emotions is equipped for this integrative task. It can provide us with a better and more comprehensive picture of the nature of emotions.
