A Long Walk To Church A Contemporary History Of Russian Orthodoxy

A Long Walk To Church A Contemporary History Of Russian Orthodoxy

Making use of the formerly secret archives of the Soviet government interviews and first-hand personal experiences Nathaniel Davis describes how the Russian Orthodox Church hung on the brink of institutional extinction twice in the past sixty-five years. In 1939 only a few score widely scattered priests were still functioning openly. Ironically Hitler's invasion and Stalin's reaction to it rescued the church - and parishes reopened new clergy and bishops were consecrated a patriarch was elected and seminaries and convents were reinstituted. However after Stalin's death Khrushchev resumed the onslaught against religion. Davis reveals that the erosion of church strength between 1948 and 1988 was greater than previously known and it was none too soon when the Soviet government changed policy in anticipation of the millennium of Russia's conversion to Christianity. More recently the collapse of communism has created a mixture of dizzying opportunity and daunting trouble for Russian Orthodoxy. The newly revised and updated edition addresses the tumultuous events of recent years including schisms in Ukraine Estonia and Moldova and confrontations between church traditionalists conservatives and reformers. The author also covers battles against Greek-Catholics Roman Catholics Protestant evangelists and pagans in the south and east the canonization of the last Czar the church's financial crisis and hard data on the slowing Russian orthodox recovery and growth. Institutional rebuilding and moral leadership now beckon between promise and possibility. | A Long Walk To Church A Contemporary History Of Russian Orthodoxy

Software Engineering Approaches to Enable Digital Transformation Technologies

Software Engineering Approaches to Enable Digital Transformation Technologies

Software Engineering Approaches to Enable Digital Transformation Technologies features contributions reflecting ideas and research in enabling digital transformation technologies through software engineering. To date multiple different approaches have been adopted to develop software solutions for a variety of different problems. Of all the available approaches the main approaches are level-oriented data flow-oriented data structure-oriented and object-oriented design approaches. The other focus of the book is digital transformation which can be defined as the adoption of digital technology to improve efficiency value and innovation Digitalization is more than just putting additional technological systems and services in place. Rather than improving conventional methods a true digital transformation initiative includes radically rethinking company structures and procedures. There are four types of digital transformation: business process business model domain and cultural and organizational. Companies are being challenged to develop new business models that consider and harness digitalization. From the standpoint of software engineering digital transformation alters how software is built. Current trends include the development of mobile applications cloud applications and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Emerging trends are the development of digital twins robotics artificial intelligence machine learning augmented reality and additive manufacturing. This book examines the challenges that arise due to digitization in society and presents plausible solutions that could be applied to counter these challenges and convert them into opportunities. These solutions may further be improvised and worked out for the software companies from the technological perspective organizational perspective and management perspective.

The Science of Wind Power

The Science of Wind Power

Concern for the environment and for the impacts of environmental pollution has brought about the need to shift from the reliance on hydrocarbons to energy sources that are nearly pollution neutral and renewable. The Science of Wind Power is designed to provide a fundamental understanding for wind technicians and students alike essentially examining how to harness the wind to produce energy for transmission and use while keeping environmental impacts in mind. Wind power is one of the fastest-growing energy sources as it offers many advantages such as being sustainable and a renewable energy source that has a much smaller impact on the global environment compared to fossil fuels. It is important to point out however that like wind itself wind power has a good and bad side advantages and disadvantages (challenges) and these different aspects are discussed in detail herein. Features: Examines the mechanical electrical hydraulic and electronic aspects of wind turbines Provides the fundamentals of wind turbine aerodynamics modeling and testing Includes design standards for wind turbines and electrical distribution systems Delineates the differences between offshore and land-based wind power Discusses special-purpose applications such as energy distribution and storage A must-have volume that includes the latest data diagrams and useful illustrations The Science of Wind Energy offers a complete examination of one of the most promising sources of renewable energy and serves as a great introduction to the cross-disciplinary field for students and practicing engineers. The concepts and guidelines presented will equip readers with the scientific rationale required to make decisions that could directly affect the environment around them.

The (Dis)Order of U.S. Schooling Zygmunt Bauman and Education for an Ambivalent World

The (Dis)Order of U.S. Schooling Zygmunt Bauman and Education for an Ambivalent World

This book critically interrogates the function of schooling in the United States of America using the writings of sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. Asking whether the function is to produce citizens workers a combination of the two or something altogether different it argues that the designs of schooling are part of a carefully crafted ordering illustrated via an analysis of the ways in which schooling introduces students to various forms of coercion and seduction that socialize students in particular ways: ways that support an order. By engaging with the prolific and insightful works of one of the most prominent social thinkers of the 21st century this book considers schooling and its contributions to order. Be they solid or liquid modern ordering mechanisms ordering through repression and seduction or supporting ordering through the creation of boundaries separating an “orderly inside” from its “disorderly outside ” schools imperfectly support the construction of order and in doing so privilege some representations and individuals over others. To order is to harness ambivalence and steer it in directions that privilege the “in” group at the expense of the “out” group; and schools from the curriculum they teach to the values and ideas they promote are desirable captive marketplaces instrumental in steering this ambivalence. The author ultimately suggests that the function of schools whether recognized or not are not so much to educate students to be free thinkers but rather to be orderly cogs in a particular functional social machine. As such the book will be of interest to faculty scholars and postgraduate-level students with interests in the sociology of education schooling sociology and social theory. | The (Dis)Order of U. S. Advanced and Multivariate Statistical Methods Practical Application and Interpretation

Advanced and Multivariate Statistical Methods Practical Application and Interpretation

Advanced and Multivariate Statistical Methods Seventh Edition provides conceptual and practical information regarding multivariate statistical techniques to students who do not necessarily need technical and/or mathematical expertise in these methods. This text has three main purposes. The first purpose is to facilitate conceptual understanding of multivariate statistical methods by limiting the technical nature of the discussion of those concepts and focusing on their practical applications. The second purpose is to provide students with the skills necessary to interpret research articles that have employed multivariate statistical techniques. Finally the third purpose of AMSM is to prepare graduate students to apply multivariate statistical methods to the analysis of their own quantitative data or that of their institutions. New to the Seventh Edition All references to SPSS have been updated to Version 27. 0 of the software. A brief discussion of practical significance has been added to Chapter 1. New data sets have now been incorporated into the book and are used extensively in the SPSS examples. All the SPSS data sets utilized in this edition are available for download via the companion website. Additional resources on this site include several video tutorials/walk-throughs of the SPSS procedures. These how-to videos run approximately 5–10 minutes in length. Advanced and Multivariate Statistical Methods was written for use by students taking a multivariate statistics course as part of a graduate degree program for example in psychology education sociology criminal justice social work mass communication and nursing. | Advanced and Multivariate Statistical Methods Practical Application and Interpretation
