The Color Line A Short Introduction

Managing State Social Work Front-Line Management and the Labour Process Perspective

Managing State Social Work Front-Line Management and the Labour Process Perspective

Published in 1998. The industrial model of the labour process developed by Braverman was applied to social work in the radical social work literature. The book engages in a more critical examination of the application of the labour process perspective to social work with particular reference to front-line management in a local authority context. It begins with a review of the labour process literature which demonstrates the extent to which the independence of Braverman’s model on scientific management was undermined in the post-Braverman debate. The radical texts' orthodox Bravermanian approach to the social work labour process is considered. In those texts the social work labour process is represented as having moved towards an industrial model which steadily encroached on the autonomy of front-line field social workers through managers’ wresting of control over their work. The book advances an alternative model of the social work labour process which takes account of the distinctive features of social work as a state-mediated bureau-professional labour process. Findings from a small-scale case study of a social services department are presented. Data from the study are used to test the bureau-professional model of the social work labour process against the orthodox Bravermanian model. Developments in the social services department’s organizational structure are set out and the position of front-line managers is considered through an exploration of their identifications and commitments in relation to management and trade unionism. The data from their accounts support the bureau-professional model of the labour process and the position of front-line managers emerges as more ambiguous than the radical social work literature indicated. Front-line managers did not share global goals with senior management nor were their interests merged straightforwardly with those of social workers. | Managing State Social Work Front-Line Management and the Labour Process Perspective

Contesting ‘Race’ and Sport Shaming the Colour Line

Contesting ‘Race’ and Sport Shaming the Colour Line

In the decade since Kevin Hylton’s seminal book ‘Race’ and Sport: Critical Race Theory was published racialised issues have remained at the forefront of sport and leisure studies. In this important new book Hylton draws on original research in contemporary contexts from sport coaching to cyberspace to show once again that Critical Race Theory is an insightful and productive tool for interrogating problematic social phenomena. Inspired by W. E. B. Du Bois’ statement that the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the colour line this book sheds a critical light on the way sport perpetuates racism while identifying opportunities to challenge its insidious presence. Exploring and explaining the ways in which notions of ‘race’ are expressed and contested at individual institutional and societal levels it addresses key topics such as whiteness diversity colourblindness unconscious bias identity leadership humour and discourse to investigate how language can be used as a device for resistance against racism in sport. Contesting ‘Race’ and Sport: Shaming the Colour Line is vital reading for all sport studies students academics and those with an interest in race ethnicity and society. Sheldon Wolin and Democracy Seeing Through Loss

Sheldon Wolin and Democracy Seeing Through Loss

Lucy Cane presents the first full-length study of Sheldon Wolin (1922–2015) an influential theorist of democracy and prescient critic of inverted totalitarianism in the United States. She traces the development of Wolin’s thinking over sixty years offering an overarching interpretation of his central preoccupations and shifts in perspective. Framed around themes of loss and mourning this is not only an intellectual biography but also a critical engagement of Wolin’s work with democratic theory more broadly and an assessment of its value for addressing contemporary crises of democracy. Cane brings Wolin into conversation with other contemporary theorists from Chantal Mouffe to Edward Said as well as with his direct intellectual influences. She argues that his mournful tendencies continue to offer unique insight into the potential loss of local democratic cultures in an era of neoliberal precarity. At the same time she questions whether his politics of mourning can adequately grasp the dynamics of democratic coalition-building or the value of new political movements and ideas. Sheldon Wolin and Democracy remedies a lack of interpretive studies of this key thinker connects divergent strands of contemporary theory and addresses urgent democratic dilemmas. It is a must read for all political theorists and others in the academy and beyond who seek to conceptualize the fate of democracy amidst the rise of right-wing populist movements in the twenty-first century. | Sheldon Wolin and Democracy Seeing Through Loss

Corsets and Crinolines

Corsets and Crinolines

In this classic book Norah Waugh explores the changing shapes of women’s dress from the 1500s to the 1920s. Simple laced bodices became corsets of cane whalebone and steel while padding at shoulders and hips gave way to the structures of farthingales hoops and bustles. Corsets and Crinolines explains the cyclical nature of these fashions and how waists and skirts changed shape and size through three distinct eras: The 1500s to 1670—farthingales and whaleboned bodies. 1670 to 1800—Stays and hooped petticoats. 1800 to 1925—corsets crinolines and bustles. Each section describes how these garments originated how they became popular and how they emerged as central to the fashions of the time. Extracts from diaries journals poems and newspapers as well as over 100 illustrations demonstrate the variety of these ubiquitous items of clothing throughout modern history. Corsets and Crinolines also contains a wealth of practical notes and resources for today’s costume makers and designers including: Scaleable patterns for the construction of 25 different bustles crinolines corsets corselets stays pocket hoops hooped petticoats and bodices. Detailed appendices on the manufacture of corsets and crinolines including farthingales supports and hooped petticoats.
