Dialogues between Psychoanalysis and Architecture The Relational Space of the Consulting Room Through the Senses

Dialogues between Psychoanalysis and Architecture The Relational Space of the Consulting Room Through the Senses

Dialogues between Psychoanalysis and Architecture explores the multisensory space of therapy real or virtual and how important it is in providing the container for the therapeutic relationship and process. This book is highly original in bringing psychoanalysis and architecture together and highlighting how both disciplines strive to achieve transformation of our psychic space. It brings together contributions that comprise three parts: the first explores the space of the consulting room through the senses to examine issues such as smell and its link with memory and belonging hearing out the Other the psychoanalytic couch the medical therapy room and the so-called sixth sense; secondly the book questions how the consulting room can represent or be redesigned to reflect the philosophy that underlies the therapy process foregrounding an architectural point of view; and thirdly the book attends to the significance of the consulting room as a virtual space as it emerged during the pandemic of COVID-19 and beyond. Architectural psychotherapeutic and interdisciplinary perspectives allow for an important new dimension on the psychological use of space and will appeal to psychoanalysts psychoanalytic and integrative psychotherapists art therapists students of psychotherapy as well as architects and designers. | Dialogues between Psychoanalysis and Architecture The Relational Space of the Consulting Room Through the Senses

The Elephant in the Room Engaging with the Unsaid in Groups and Organizations

A group is working on a business challenge. The group members are under pressure. They have a lot to accomplish and a limited amount of time. After first attempting to develop an overview of their common task they try to make a plan to ensure an efficient group process. The planning is proving difficult. We’ve all been there. We are in a working group or at a meeting discussing a topic or a challenge and all the while as a separate track running underneath our conversation there is a subtext that no one explicitly addresses. This is an example of ‘the elephant in the room. ’ Most of us notice the elephant it gets in the way and it’s difficult to deal with until someone points at it and says ‘There it is let’s take a look at it and reduce its impact. ’ With an engaging use of examples and questions the book addresses how we can best deal with the elephant and thus promote job satisfaction creativity and productivity. In the context of action what we notice often recedes into the background and gradually slips out of focus until we eventually reconnect with our need to reflect and recreate a space for it. This book addresses the challenge of focusing on holding on to and acting on what we notice ‘in the middle of it all. ’ Maintaining a simultaneous focus on task and process – what we do and what we notice – is what I define as ‘double awareness. ’ Double awareness is not only a core capacity but also a core challenge. The aim of the book is to promote understanding and awareness of this core challenge and to inspire both reflection and action in anyone wishing to improve their capacity for double awareness. How can we define and understand the practice of mindful avoidance? And can we as members of groups and organizations begin to practice mindful action by engaging in and acting on what we notice in real time? | The Elephant in the Room Engaging with the Unsaid in Groups and Organizations

Planning in the Moment with Two and Three Year Olds Child-initiated Play in Action

Planning in the Moment with Two and Three Year Olds Child-initiated Play in Action

Children are most engaged – and therefore learn best – when they are following their own interests. In this book Anna Ephgrave shows how her acclaimed ‘planning in the moment’ approach can be used with two and three year olds with dramatic results for both children and staff. It reveals the impact that free-flowing child-initiated play has on very young children’s wellbeing making them feel safe secure and consequently helping them to be fully engaged in their learning. The first part of the book clearly explains the principles of child-initiated play and demonstrates how practitioners can create the best possible environment for very young children also looking at the resources and practices that need to be in place for them to flourish. There is detailed guidance on the role of the practitioner including how adults should observe children’s play before deciding how – or if – to interact in that moment to ensure that each interaction moves learning forward and supports the child’s unique development. The second part of the book tracks some of the events from each month in the toddler room of an outstanding preschool following a cohort of children through a year to show how the setting moved from topic-based adult-led activities to a fully child-led way of working. Key features include: Over 350 full colour photos to illustrate practice Specific guidance on using the ‘in the moment’ approach with all children including those with additional needs Advice on working with parents individual children and groups Examples of individual learning journeys Photocopiable templates of ‘focus-child’ sheets Covering all aspects of practice from the organization of the room and outdoor environment to the routines and boundaries that ensure children are safe and happy this book is essential reading for anyone who works with two and three year olds. | Planning in the Moment with Two and Three Year Olds Child-initiated Play in Action
