Until a few years ago, Madagascar did not have any Patchouli plantations due to the excessive heat on the mainland, but thanks to the brilliant intuition of Mr. Camarat, director of the Robertet Ylang Ylang plantation, this plant has managed to take root. Camarat recovered some seedlings from an abandoned plantation, propagated them by hand and replanted them on the island of Nosy Be, protecting them from the strong sun rays through the shade of other plants. Camarat's expert work has made possible the birth of a new quality of Patchouli essential oil: the herbaceous, musty and camphor notes are less present while dry woody notes and bitter cocoa aromas are further emphasized. The work of treating the plants is long and laborious and the selection of the leaves is done strictly by hand: the best are those that begin to turn yellow and are left for at least a week in a dry and shaded environment. During this period the leaves, losing humidity, will retain the precious essential oil in greater concentration.
