Evolution and Speciation in Plants

Evolution and Speciation in Plants

Plants are autotrophs and sessile while animals are heterotrophs and motile. Sessility has imposed on plants 94% hermaphroditism 23% selfing 3% polyploidization and 39% clonality in comparison to < 5% herma-phroditism < 1% selfing and 2% clonality in motile animals. Whereas plants consist of 374 000 species but 1 664 variety/species animals comprise 1 543 196 species and 210 variety/species. Hence plants have undergone variety diversity while animals have species diversity. In animals and plants the species ratio is reduced from 4. 1 animals : 1. 0 plant to 1. 4 for pollinating animals : 1. 0 pollinated plants. In pollination animals are benefited dietarily but plants are cross pollinated generating new gene combinations – the raw material for evolution and speciation. For the reduced species diversity in plants reasons are traced to 90% hermaphroditism ~ 23% selfing and 39% clonality. Clonality decreases from 100% in 6-7 tissue typed sponges and 3 tissue typed algae drastically to 0. 7% in 60 tissue typed worms but gradually to ~ 23% in 60 tissued typed angiosperms. About 12-15 5-8 and 77-80% of all animal and plant species are distributed in marine freshwater and terrestrial habitats respectively. Animals have conserved the ‘right’ sequence of gametogenesis but plants have gone through a ‘wrong’ sequence prior to settling with right one albeit with double fertilization in angiosperms. Both animals and plants are 80% male heterogametics. Only 0. 5% of them can afford semelparity. While 20 and 57% angiosperms are perennial trees and herbs annual herbs make up 23% only. In all of them 85 > 19 and < 1% are pollinated by fast flying animals wind and water respectively. Increasing pollen load enhances fruit- and seed-set. In contrast to animals the life cycle of plants is direct but complicated. Unlike animals plants have greatly contributed to weathering of rocks and the atmospheric gas composition during the geological past. From dormant spores and seeds of plants life can be restored after thousands of years. | Evolution and Speciation in Plants

High Pressure Processing of Fruit and Vegetable Products

High Pressure Processing of Fruit and Vegetable Products

High pressure processing is a fast-growing food processing technology and opens the door to nearly-fresh products that retain their sensorial and nutritional qualities. High Pressure Processing of Fruit and Vegetable Products reviews and summarizes the latest advances in novel high-pressure processing techniques for preserving fruits fruit juices and their mixtures. It contains basic information on the relation of high-process treatment parameters with the safety and quality of fruit and vegetable juices/products. The book focuses on product quality parameters nutritional value bio-active health components and microbial safety and stability. The main aim of this book is to summarize the advances in the utilization of modern high pressure pasteurization (HPP) treatment to preserve and stabilize fruit and vegetable products. HPP technology is related to the product quality parameters the content of nutritional and health active components and the microbial safety and subsequent shelf life. One chapter of this book is devoted to industrial equipment available; other chapters deal with examples of commercial fruit and vegetable products. Another chapter of this book is dedicated to packaging as packaging of food before HPP is mandatory in this technology. The regulatory aspects for high-pressure treated fruit and vegetable products in different regions of the world (Europe the United States Asia and Australia) are also an important topic dealt within one chapter of the book. The effects of HPP technology on the quality of fruit and vegetable products namely nutrients and stability health active components and sensory aspects are reviewed in a trio of chapters.

Secrets of the Moon Understanding and Analysing the Lunar Surface

Secrets of the Moon Understanding and Analysing the Lunar Surface

Secrets of the Moon: Understanding and Analysing the Lunar Surface provides a unique account of the origin of key features on the lunar surface. Containing historical accounts and the latest observations from the field in addition to exciting data from the Apollo manned missions it describes the development of our current understanding of our Moon. It also explores the fracturing of the Moon a topic not explored in other literature in the area and contains a statistical treatment of the smaller craters of the Moon as well as a geological treatment of the larger craters. This moderately technical account is designed to clarify and update the general thinking on the nature and origin of the most important lunar surface features for both undergraduate and research students. It may also be read by the professional scientist especially the astronomer and the geologist who has found little time to study the Moon’s topography in addition to the lunar amateur astronomer and even the dedicated layman with a keen interest in lunar science. The book excludes nearly all mathematical symbols in order to remain accessible to those without a formal education in the area. Key Features: Authored by an expert in the area Presents a comprehensive account of the lunar surface from historical observations to the NASA Apollo manned missions and the latest observations and data in the field Includes a statistical and geological treatment of the craters Dr. Gilbert Fielder is Reader Emeritus at Lancaster University United Kingdom. He performed extended teaching at Lancaster University on Planetary Science and introduced a new degree course on Remote Sensing. Prior to this he was Principal Investigator in NASA’s Heat Capacity Mapping Programme while continuing to head the Lunar and Planetary Unit at Lancaster until retirement. Dr. Fielder has authored several books and presented many BBC and ITA television news programmes as well as popular programmes with Sir Patrick Moore (on the BBC’s The Sky at Night) and on the occasion of the first landing of astronauts on the Moon with David Frost as Chairman in a special programme. | Secrets of the Moon Understanding and Analysing the Lunar Surface

Handbook on Federated Learning Advances Applications and Opportunities

Handbook on Federated Learning Advances Applications and Opportunities

Mobile wearable and self-driving telephones are just a few examples of modern distributed networks that generate enormous amount of information every day. Due to the growing computing capacity of these devices as well as concerns over the transfer of private information it has become important to process the part of the data locally by moving the learning methods and computing to the border of devices. Federated learning has developed as a model of education in these situations. Federated learning (FL) is an expert form of decentralized machine learning (ML). It is essential in areas like privacy large-scale machine education and distribution. It is also based on the current stage of ICT and new hardware technology and is the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI). In FL central ML model is built with all the data available in a centralised environment in the traditional machine learning. It works without problems when the predictions can be served by a central server. Users require fast responses in mobile computing but the model processing happens at the sight of the server thus taking too long. The model can be placed in the end-user device but continuous learning is a challenge to overcome as models are programmed in a complete dataset and the end-user device lacks access to the entire data package. Another challenge with traditional machine learning is that user data is aggregated at a central location where it violates local privacy policies laws and make the data more vulnerable to data violation. This book provides a comprehensive approach in federated learning for various aspects. | Handbook on Federated Learning Advances Applications and Opportunities
