Development of an Environmental Impact Assessment and Decision Support System for Seawater Desalination Plants

Development of an Environmental Impact Assessment and Decision Support System for Seawater Desalination Plants

Seawater desalination is a coastal-based industry. The growing number of desalination plants worldwide and the increasing size of single facilities emphasises the need for greener desalination technologies and more sustainable desalination projects. Two complementing approaches are the development and implementation of best available technology (BAT) standards and best practice guidelines for environmental impact assessment (EIA) studies. While BAT is a technology-based approach which favours state of the art technologies that reduce resource consumption and waste emissions EIA aims at minimizing impacts at a site- and project-specific level through environmental monitoring evaluation of impacts and mitigation where necessary. This book contains a comprehensive evaluation and synthesis of the potential environmental impacts of desalination plants with emphasis on the marine environment and aspects of energy use followed by the development of strategies for impact mitigating. A concept for BAT for seawater desalination technologies is proposed in combination with a methodological approach for the EIA of desalination projects. The scope of the EIA studies are outlined including environmental monitoring toxicity and hydrodynamic modelling studies and the usefulness of multi-criteria analysis as a decision support tool for EIAs is explored and used to compare different intake and pre-treatment options for seawater reverse osmosis plants. | Development of an Environmental Impact Assessment and Decision Support System for Seawater Desalination Plants

Ageing Well Nutrition Health and Social Interventions

Ageing Well Nutrition Health and Social Interventions

Many current public health actions and policies aimed at older people revolve around the often prevailing view that failing health is a consequence of ageing. It is now clear that it is possible to postpone or even prevent much of the age-related decline in health that was once thought inevitable. Future policies must recognise this changing paradigm and using a multi-disciplinary approach integrate fully the changing needs of older people into all areas of public policy including health nutrition social support housing and economic security. Derived from the 47th Annual Symposium of the Society for the Study of Human Biology in November 2005 Ageing Well: Nutrition Health and Social Interventions highlights important health and social factors affecting quality of life in older age and reviews possible interventions aimed at the prevention or amelioration of problems that reduce the potential for ageing well. Covering a wide range of topics contributors address the nutritional vulnerability and specific nutritional needs of older adults and confirm the necessity of appropriate diet and exercise in order to maintain both physical and cognitive health. Reminiscence social interaction and support are highlighted as crucial for the preservation of identity health and emotional well-being. Other chapters are concerned with socio-economic differences in the extent of age-related changes in health resulting particularly from poor quality housing and lack of family support networks. The book includes an examination of the economic consequences for health care systems and pension schemes of ageing populations provides insight into the methodology of evaluating the cost-effectiveness of interventions and outlines how the minimum cost of healthy living for the 65 plus population can be estimated. Bringing together the very latest information on successful ageing Ageing Well: Nutrition Health and Social Interventions presents an up | Ageing Well Nutrition Health and Social Interventions

Professionalism in the Built Heritage Sector Edited Contributions to the International Conference on Professionalism in the Built Heritage S

Professionalism in the Built Heritage Sector Edited Contributions to the International Conference on Professionalism in the Built Heritage S

Professionalism entails the conduct aims and qualities that characterise a profession. The term is also used to describe education and training standards for the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a specific profession. In practice professional standards of practice and ethics are agreed upon and maintained by recognised associations. In the past professionalism has not occupied a central place in built heritage discussions policy and research. Recent changes in terms of public attitudes and sustainability concerns have had a cumulative impact on the requirements for professionalism in the built heritage sector. The future success of the sector will depend on the availability of adequate professionals and an appropriately skilled workforce. In practice the built heritage sector involves much more than interventions to conserve preserve rehabilitate or restore a heritage structure. Bringing a project to fruition begins with the formulation of a policy proceeds to the design and execution of intervention strategies and ends with ongoing maintenance of heritage structures and related future programming. This process requires sufficient interactions between different professionals to obtain a common vision and hold that vision throughout a project. At the same time the sustainability of the sector is also defined by effective governance societal support and cultural rationales. Professionalism in the Built Heritage Sector contains reports on the lectures of the international conference organized by the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (Leuven Belgium February 5th-8th 2018). The contributions in this volume meet the increasing demand for shared information to support the transition towards a more sustainable conservation process. The volume consists of three main parts that deal with practice-led research or scientific research: Profiles and capacities Education training and quality labels and Obstacles and changes. | Professionalism in the Built Heritage Sector Edited Contributions to the International Conference on Professionalism in the Built Heritage S
