Mining and the Environment From Ore to Metal

Mining and the Environment From Ore to Metal

The history of mining is replete with controversy of which much is related to environmental damage and consequent community outrage. Over recent decades this has led to increased pressure to improve the environmental and social performance of mining operations particularly in developing countries. The industry has responded by embracing the ideals of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Mining and the Environment identifies and discusses the wide range of social and environmental issues pertaining to mining with particular reference to mining in developing countries from where many of the project examples and case studies have been selected. Following an introductory overview of pressing issues the book illustrates how environmental and social impact assessment such as defined in The Equator Principles integrates with the mining lifecycle and how environmental and social management aims to eliminate the negative and accentuate the positive mining impacts. Practical approaches are provided for managing issues ranging from land acquisition and resettlement of Indigenous peoples to the technical aspects of acid rock drainage and mine waste management. Moreover thorough analyses of ways and means of sharing non-transitory mining benefits with host communities are presented to allow mining to provide sustainable benefits for the affected communities. This second edition of Mining and the Environment includes new chapters on Health Impact Assessment Biodiversity and Gender Issues all of which have become more important since the first edition appeared a decade ago. The wide coverage of issues and the many real-life case studies make this practice-oriented book a reference and key reading. It is intended for environmental consultants engineers regulators and operators in the field and for students to use as a course textbook. As much of the matter applies to the extractive industries as a whole it will also serve environmental professionals in the oil and gas industries. Karlheinz Spitz and John Trudinger both have multiple years of experience in the assessment of mining projects around the world. The combination of their expertise and knowledge about social economic and environmental performance of mining and mine waste management has resulted in this in-depth coverage of the requirements for responsible and sustainable mining. | Mining and the Environment From Ore to Metal

Professionalism in the Built Heritage Sector Edited Contributions to the International Conference on Professionalism in the Built Heritage S

Professionalism entails the conduct aims and qualities that characterise a profession. The term is also used to describe education and training standards for the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a specific profession. In practice professional standards of practice and ethics are agreed upon and maintained by recognised associations. In the past professionalism has not occupied a central place in built heritage discussions policy and research. Recent changes in terms of public attitudes and sustainability concerns have had a cumulative impact on the requirements for professionalism in the built heritage sector. The future success of the sector will depend on the availability of adequate professionals and an appropriately skilled workforce. In practice the built heritage sector involves much more than interventions to conserve preserve rehabilitate or restore a heritage structure. Bringing a project to fruition begins with the formulation of a policy proceeds to the design and execution of intervention strategies and ends with ongoing maintenance of heritage structures and related future programming. This process requires sufficient interactions between different professionals to obtain a common vision and hold that vision throughout a project. At the same time the sustainability of the sector is also defined by effective governance societal support and cultural rationales. Professionalism in the Built Heritage Sector contains reports on the lectures of the international conference organized by the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (Leuven Belgium February 5th-8th 2018). The contributions in this volume meet the increasing demand for shared information to support the transition towards a more sustainable conservation process. The volume consists of three main parts that deal with practice-led research or scientific research: Profiles and capacities Education training and quality labels and Obstacles and changes. | Professionalism in the Built Heritage Sector Edited Contributions to the International Conference on Professionalism in the Built Heritage S

Users Guide to Ecohydraulic Modelling and Experimentation Experience of the Ecohydraulic Research Team (PISCES) of the HYDRALAB Network

Users Guide to Ecohydraulic Modelling and Experimentation has been compiled by the interdisciplinary team of expert ecologists geomorphologists sedimentologists hydraulicists and engineers involved in HYDRALAB IV the European Integrated Infrastructure Initiative on hydraulic experimentation which forms part of the European Community‘s Seventh Framework Programme. It is designed to give an overview of our current knowledge of organism-environment interactions in marine and freshwater aquatic systems and to provide guidance to those wishing to use hydraulic experimental facilities to explore ecohydraulic processes. By highlighting the current state of our knowledge this design manual will act as a guide to the use of living organisms in physical models and experiments and help scientists and engineers understand limitations on the use of surrogates. It incorporates chapters on the general decisions that need to be taken when designing an ecohydraulic experiment as well as specific chapters on the main aquatic and marine organisms likely to be of interest. Each of the chapters reviews current knowledge in a defined area of ecohydraulic experimental research. It excludes consideration of fish and mammals and does not deal with plankton as it focuses on the sediment-water interface and the influences of biota in this complex area. Its primary purpose is to disseminate the extensive knowledge and experience of the team of ecohydraulic experimentalists involved in HYDRALAB IV as part of the PISCES research project as well as some of the important advances being made in this fast developing field of research. | Users Guide to Ecohydraulic Modelling and Experimentation Experience of the Ecohydraulic Research Team (PISCES) of the HYDRALAB Network

Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River The Case of the Shatt al-Arab River

Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River The Case of the Shatt al-Arab River

This book reports the first systematic monitoring and modelling study on water availability water quality and seawater intrusion of the Shatt al-Arab River (SAR) on the border of Iraq and Iran where causes and concentration levels of salinity have not yet been fully understood let alone addressed leading to conflicting perceptions of its origin (external or internal) the natural conditions and the practices that can explain the current critical conditions. Current scientific knowledge on the SAR salinity problem is deficient partially due to the complex and dynamic interaction between marine and terrestrial salinity sources including return flows by water users of the different water sectors in the Euphrates and Tigris rivers upstream of the SAR. The development of a new series of monitoring stations and various modelling approaches helped to better understand the interactions between these different sources. The comprehensive and detailed dataset formed the basis for a validated analytical model that can predict the extent of seawater relative to other salinity sources in an estuary and for a hydrodynamic model that can predict salinity changes. The adaptability of the models to changing conditions makes them directly applicable by water managers. The procedure can be applied to other comparable systems. | Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River The Case of the Shatt al-Arab River

In Search of Vikings Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Scandinavian Heritage of North-West England

In Search of Vikings Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Scandinavian Heritage of North-West England

The Viking Age lasted a little over three centuries but has left a lasting legacy across Europe. These dynamic warrior-traders from Scandinavia who fought and interacted with peoples as far apart as North America Russia and Central Asia are some of the most recognizable historical figures in the western world. In the modern imagination they represent ruthlessness heroism adventurousness and a unique prestige embellished by the wondrous tales and poetry of the sagas. Yet the sum of evidence for the Viking presence is far less clear than their reputation implies. In Search of Vikings presents a collection of papers from experts in a broad range of disciplines including history archaeology genetics and linguistics to provide a detailed understanding of the Vikings in peace and in war. This book focuses on one particularly exciting area of the Viking world namely the north-west region of England where they are known to have settled in large numbers. North-west England was the crossroads between Ireland Scotland Wales the Isle of Man and the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. It was a battleground for distant powers and dynasties and its Irish Sea coastline created opportunities for trading and settlement. Silver hoards burials and Old Norse place-names attest to the Viking presence and Scandinavian DNA is detectable amongst the modern population. The 12 integrated studies in this book are designed to reinvigorate the search for Vikings in this crucial region and to provide must-reading for anyone interested in Viking history. | In Search of Vikings Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Scandinavian Heritage of North-West England
