Vapor Compression Heat Pumps with Refrigerant Mixtures

Vapor Compression Heat Pumps with Refrigerant Mixtures

Amidst tightening requirements for eliminating CFC’s HCFC’s halons and HFC’s from use in air conditioning and heat pumps the search began for replacements that are environmentally benign non-flammable and similar to the banned refrigerants in system-level behavior. Refrigerant mixtures are increasingly used as working fluids because they demonstrate desirable thermodynamic feasibility and safety characteristics. Vapor Compression Heat Pumps with Refrigerant Mixtures provides the first comprehensive single-source treatment of working fluid mixtures and their applications in vapor compression systems. The authors explain in detail the thermodynamics of refrigerant mixtures which is vastly more complex than that of individual refrigerants as well as the fundamentals of various refrigeration cycles and methods for improving their efficiency. They also include important discussions on heat transfer and pressure drop correlations experimental performance measurements and examples of using refrigerants and their mixtures and critical operational issues such as control issues refrigerant mixing and mass fraction shifts. Assembling reviews of the scattered literature on the subject and reflecting two decades of research by the authors Vapor Compression Heat Pumps with Refrigerant Mixtures prepares you to design and implement systems that take the best advantage of fluid mixtures confronting the challenges and grasping the opportunities that they present.

Binary Neural Networks Algorithms Architectures and Applications

Binary Neural Networks Algorithms Architectures and Applications

Deep learning has achieved impressive results in image classification computer vision and natural language processing. To achieve better performance deeper and wider networks have been designed which increase the demand for computational resources. The number of floatingpoint operations (FLOPs) has increased dramatically with larger networks and this has become an obstacle for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) being developed for mobile and embedded devices. In this context Binary Neural Networks: Algorithms Architectures and Applications will focus on CNN compression and acceleration which are important for the research community. We will describe numerous methods including parameter quantization network pruning low-rank decomposition and knowledge distillation. More recently to reduce the burden of handcrafted architecture design neural architecture search (NAS) has been used to automatically build neural networks by searching over a vast architecture space. Our book will also introduce NAS and binary NAS and its superiority and state-of-the-art performance in various applications such as image classification and object detection. We also describe extensive applications of compressed deep models on image classification speech recognition object detection and tracking. These topics can help researchers better understand the usefulness and the potential of network compression on practical applications. Moreover interested readers should have basic knowledge of machine learning and deep learning to better understand the methods described in this book. Key Features Reviews recent advances in CNN compression and acceleration Elaborates recent advances on binary neural network (BNN) technologies Introduces applications of BNN in image classification speech recognition object detection and more | Binary Neural Networks Algorithms Architectures and Applications

Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Columns

Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Columns

Concrete-filled stainless steel tubular (CFSST) columns are increasingly used in modern composite construction due to their high strength high ductility high corrosion resistance high durability and aesthetics and ease of maintenance. Thin-walled CFSST columns are characterized by the different strain-hardening behavior of stainless steel in tension and in compression local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement. Design codes and numerical models often overestimate or underestimate the ultimate strengths of CFSST columns. This book presents accurate and efficient computational models for the nonlinear inelastic analysis and design of CFSST short and slender columns under axial load and biaxial bending. The effects of different strain-hardening characteristics of stainless steel in tension and in compression progressive local and post-local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement are taken into account in the computational models. The numerical models simulate the axial load-strain behavior moment-curvature curves axial load-deflection responses and axial load-moment strength interaction diagrams of CFSST columns. The book describes the mathematical formulations computational procedures and model verifications for circular and rectangular CFSST short and slender columns. The behavior of CFSST columns under various loading conditions is demonstrated by numerous numerical examples. This book is written for practising structural and civil engineers academic researchers and graduate students in civil engineering who are interested in the latest computational techniques and design methods for CFSST columns. | Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Columns

Project Management for Research A Guide for Graduate Students

Project Management for Research A Guide for Graduate Students

Graduate research is a complicated process which many undergraduate students aspire to undertake. The complexity of the process can lead to failures for even the most brilliant students. Success at the graduate research level requires not only a high level of intellectual ability but also a high level of project management skills. Unfortunately many graduate students have trouble planning and implementing their research. Project Management for Research: A Guide for Graduate Students reflects the needs of today’s graduate students. All graduate students need mentoring and management guidance that has little to do with their actual classroom performance. Graduate students do a better job with their research programs if a self-paced guide is available to them. This book provides such a guide. It covers topics ranging from how to select an appropriate research problem to how to schedule and execute research tasks. The authors take a project management approach to planning and implementing graduate research in any discipline. They use a conversational tone to address the individual graduate student. This book helps graduate students and advisors answer most of the basic questions of conducting and presenting graduate research thereby alleviating frustration on the part of both student and advisor. It presents specific guidelines and examples throughout the text along with more detailed examples in reader-friendly appendices at the end. By being more organized and prepared to handle basic research management functions graduate students along with their advisors will have more time for actual intellectual mentoring and knowledge transfer resulting in a more rewarding research experience. | Project Management for Research A Guide for Graduate Students

FRP-Strengthened Metallic Structures

FRP-Strengthened Metallic Structures

Repairing or strengthening failing metallic structures traditionally involves using bulky and heavy external steel plates that often pose their own problems. The plates are generally prone to corrosion and overall fatigue. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers offers a great alternative for strengthening metallic structures especially steel structures such as bridges buildings offshore platforms pipelines and crane structures. FRP-Strengthened Metallic Structures explores the behaviour and design of these structures from basic concepts to design recommendations. It covers bond behaviour between FRP and steel and describes improvement of fatigue performance bending compression and bearing forces strengthening of compression and steel tubular members strengthening for enhanced fatigue and seismic performance and strengthening against web crippling of steel sections. It also provides examples of performance improvement by FRP strengthening. • Summarizes worldwide research on the FRP strengthening of metallic structures • Contains several topics not generally covered in existing texts • Presents comprehensive topical references throughout the book The book outlines the applications existing design guidance and special characteristics of FRP composites within the context of their use in structural strengthening. While the major focus is on steel structures it also describes others such as aluminium structures. This book is suitable for structural engineers researchers and university students interested in the FRP strengthening technique. Xiao-Ling Zhao is chair of structural engineering at Monash University Australia and is author of Concrete-Filled Tubular Members and Connections also published by Taylor & Francis.
