Measuring Workplace Performance

Measuring Workplace Performance

Most Fortune 1000 companies still struggle with workspace planning and design issues. They invest millions of dollars each year with the expectation that new buildings and major renovations will help transform their culture support innovation strengthen desired behaviors and increase organizational effectiveness. And let's not forget reducing costs. But there is rarely any actual measurement of the success of a new workplace against specific business or design goals (apart from cost savings). Even less often is there any ongoing measurement program to assess and improve the quality of the workplace. Measuring Workplace Performance Second Edition explores a fundamentally new way of thinking about how organizations behave and change and what this means for planning and measuring the success of the facilities that house them. This is not a planning guide or a step by step design cookbook. Rather author Michael O'Neill presents a thought-provoking biological model for thinking about organizations and workplaces describes the tools to gather information and analyze success and presents plenty of scientific case studies with hard performance and financial metrics. O'Neill addresses issues such as:What are the effects of adding flexibility into facility and workplace design in terms of improving employee and organizational performance? How do we measure the performance of facilities in terms of supporting desired behaviors (like communication collaboration) efficient business processes and other concrete performance/financial improvements?Using real-world case studies across a variety of industries O'Neill shows the types of performance measures that leading-edge companies use as well as the improvements they attain by incorporating flexibility and control into their workspaces. He uses the data from these studies to create models showing credible links between specific design features and behavioral and business process outco

Biomechanics of Human Motion Applications in the Martial Arts Second Edition

Biomechanics of Human Motion Applications in the Martial Arts Second Edition

Biomechanics of Human Motion: Applications in the Martial Arts Second Edition explores the biomechanical principles of nine different forms of martial arts with specific attention paid to their anatomical features. Within this examination Professor Arus highlights the use of energy and force especially in Kyusho-Jutsu. Whereas the first edition provided an in-depth explanation of the Aikido techniques of Kokyu-ryoku the second edition focusses specifically on the grabbing and liberation techniques used in Kyusho-Jutsu. Such an examination stresses the importance of vital points finger manipulation and their co rresponding emphasis on energy usage. As Professor Arus details throughout Biomechanics of Human Motion Second Edition knowledge of this form of pressure point maneuvering is useful in both attack and counterattack situations especially since the martial artist’s anatomo-physiological adaptation to effort represents the most significant development in fighting regimens. The second edition also includes a discussion of the katana. Professor Arus notes that defense against the katana is nearly impossible describing the three major steps used in Japanese (Ma). It is customary in Aikido to defend against a wooden sword. By using a wooden sword an Aikido Master’s demonstration is pre-determined. Techniques to defend against these demonstrations are discussed throughout the book. Finally various attack and defense techniques using pressure points are also explained in Biomechanics of Human Motion Second Edition. | Biomechanics of Human Motion Applications in the Martial Arts Second Edition

Molecular Interventions in Lifestyle-Related Diseases

Molecular Interventions in Lifestyle-Related Diseases

The Japanese Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare officially recognizing that various risk factors for disease are present in our environment has proposed the concept of lifestyle-related diseases. These include those diseases that are tied to such lifestyle choices as excessive alcohol consumption cigarette smoking exposure to stress and poor diet. Ongoing attention to this issue led to an International Symposium on Free Radicals and Health: Molecular Interventions and Protection of Lifestyle-Related Diseases bringing together the top experts in that area. With the belief that the recognition of the occurrence of risk factors and their identification are important to overcoming lifestyle-related diseases three of those experts invited prominent participants at the symposium to contribute to a book. Molecular Interventions in Lifestyle-Related Diseases is the result of that effort. This book is divided into three main sections:Free Radicals Lifestyle-Related Diseases and Their ProtectionFree Radicals Brain Diseases and Their ProtectionNutraceuticals Functional Foods Micronutrients and Pharmacological InterventionsWhen bad lifestyle choices cause oxidants and free radicals to have a negative influence on cell signaling and gene expression lifestyle-related diseases are set into motion which in turn lead to further oxidative stress. Molecular Interventions in Lifestyle-Related Diseases addresses the molecular basis of free radicals and lifestyle-related diseases and preventive/therapeutic approaches including the use of nutraceuticals functional foods and pharmacological interventions. Each section contains several chapters addressing critical molecular mechanisms therapeutic interventions and other issues of relevance to human health that will be of interest to students and researchers in the health professions including nutritional and environmental scientists molecular and cell biologi

Relevant Acoustic Phonetics of L2 English Focus on Intelligibility

Relevant Acoustic Phonetics of L2 English Focus on Intelligibility

Intelligibility is the ultimate goal of human communication. However measuring it objectively remained elusive until the 1940s when physicist Harvey Fletcher pioneered a psychoacoustic methodology for doing so. Another physicist von Bekesy demonstrated clinically that Fletcher’s theory of Critical Bands was anchored in anatomical and auditory reality. Fletcher’s and Bekesy’s approach to intelligibility has revolutionized contemporary understanding of the processes involved in encoding and decoding speech signals. Their insights are applied in this book to account for the intelligibility of the pronunciation of 67 non-native speakers from the following language backgrounds –10 Arabic 10 Japanese 10 Korean 10 Mandarin 11 Serbian and Croatian the Slavic Group 6 Somali and 10 Spanish speakers who read the Speech Accent Archive elicitation paragraph. Their pronunciation is analyzed instrumentally and compared and contrasted with that of 10 native speakers of General American English (GAE) who read the same paragraph. The data-driven intelligibility analyses proposed in this book help answer the following questions: Can L2 speakers of English whose native language lacks a segment/segments or a suprasegment/ suprasegments manage to produce it/them intelligibly? If they cannot what segments or suprasegments do they use to substitute for it/them? Do the compensatory strategies used interfere with intelligibility? The findings reported in this book are based on nearly 12 000 measured speech tokens produced by all the participants. This includes some 2 000 vowels more than 500 stop consonants over 3 000 fricatives nearly 1 200 nasals about 1 500 approximants a over 1 200 syllables onsets as many as 800 syllable codas more than 1 600 measurement of F0/pitch and duration measurements of no fewer than 539 disyllabic words. These measurements are in keeping with Baken and Orlikoff (2000:3) and in accordance with widely accepted Just Noticeable Difference thresholds and relative functional load calculations provided by Catforda (1987). | Relevant Acoustic Phonetics of L2 English Focus on Intelligibility
