The main tasks of the player is to gather troops, expand the city, develop various technologies and trade. The gameplay, including battles, is conducted in real time. The battles involve infantry, cavalry, siege engines and ships. Age of Empires 2 HD features Steam-supported multiplayer - no more clumsy matchmaking with GameSpy.
