Cognitive Neuroscience of Consciousness A Special Issue of Cognitive Neuroscience

Cognitive Neuroscience of Consciousness A Special Issue of Cognitive Neuroscience

How do conscious experience subjectivity and free will arise from the brain and the body? Even in the late 20th century consciousness was considered to be beyond the reach of science. Now understanding the neural mechanisms underlying consciousness is recognized as a key objective for 21st century science. The cognitive neuroscience of consciousness is a fundamentally multidisciplinary enterprise involving powerful new combinations of functional brain imaging computational modelling theoretical innovation and basic neurobiology. Its progress will be marked by new insights not only into the complex brain mechanisms underlying consciousness but also by novel clinical approaches to a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. These innovations are well represented by the contents of the present volume. A target article by Victor Lamme puts forward the contentious position that neural evidence should trump evidence from behaviour and introspection in any theory of consciousness. This article and its several commentaries advance one of the fundamental debates in consciousness science namely whether there exists non-reportable phenomenal consciousness perhaps dependent on local rather than global neural processes. Other articles explore the wider terrain of the new science of consciousness. For example Maniscalco and colleagues use theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation to selectively impair metacognitive awareness; Massimini and coworkers examine changes in functional connectivity during anesthesi and Vanhaudenhuyse et al describe innovations in detecting residual awareness following traumatic brain injury. Together then contents of this volume exemplify the `grand challenge of consciousness' in combining transformative questions about the human condition with a tractable programme of experimental and theoretical research. | Cognitive Neuroscience of Consciousness A Special Issue of Cognitive Neuroscience

International Handbook of Thinking and Reasoning

The Routledge International Handbook of Thinking and Reasoning is an authoritative reference work providing a balanced overview of current scholarship spanning the full breadth of the rapidly developing and expanding field of thinking and reasoning. It contains 35 chapters written by leading international researchers covering foundational issues as well as state-of-the-art developments in thinking and reasoning research. Topics covered range across all sub-areas of thinking and reasoning including deduction induction abduction judgment decision making argumentation problem solving expertise creativity and rationality. The contributors engage with cutting-edge debates such as the status of dual-process theories of thinking the role of unconscious intuitive emotional and metacognitive processes in thinking and the importance of probabilistic conceptualisations of thinking and reasoning. Authors also examine the importance of neuroscientific findings in informing theoretical developments and explore the situated nature of thinking and reasoning across a range of real-world contexts such as mathematics medicine and science. The Handbook provides a clear sense of the way in which contemporary ideas are challenging traditional viewpoints as new paradigm of the psychology of reasoning emerges. This paradigm-shifting research is paving the way toward a richer and more inclusive understanding of thinking and reasoning where important new questions drive a forward-looking research agenda. It is essential reading for both established researchers in the field of thinking and reasoning as well as advanced students wishing to learn more about both the historical foundations and latest developments in this rapidly growing field.

Modelling Word Recognition and Reading Aloud A Special Issue of the European Journal of Cognitive Psychology

Modelling Word Recognition and Reading Aloud A Special Issue of the European Journal of Cognitive Psychology

Computational modeling has tremendously advanced our understanding of the processes involved in normal and impaired reading. While previous research has mainly focused on simulating reading aloud of monosyllabic words in English the present special issue highlights some new directions in the field of word recognition and reading aloud. These new lines of research include the learning orthographic and phonological representations in both supervised and unsupervised networks and the extension of existing models to multi-syllabic word processing both in English and in other languages such as Italian French and German. The special issue also covers hotly debated issues concerning the front-end of the reading process the neural plausibility of current models of word recognition and naming the viability of Bayesian approaches to understanding reading as well as the long-standing opposition between rule-based and statistical learning. Finally this special issue includes simulation work on novel benchmark phenomena such as the effects of fast phonology masked onset priming and syllabic neighbourhood. Altogether the present special issue provides a critical analysis and synthesis of current computational models of reading and cutting edge research concerning the next generation of computational models of word recognition and reading aloud. | Modelling Word Recognition and Reading Aloud A Special Issue of the European Journal of Cognitive Psychology

Straight Choices The Psychology of Decision Making

Straight Choices The Psychology of Decision Making

Straight Choices provides a fascinating introduction to the psychology of decision making enhanced by discussion of relevant examples of decision problems faced in everyday life. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout this edition provides an integrative account of the psychology of decision-making and shows how psychological research can help us understand our uncertain world. The book emphasizes the relationship between learning and decision-making arguing that the best way to understand how and why decisions are made is in the context of the learning and knowledge acquisition which precedes them and the feedback which follows. The mechanisms of learning and the structure of environments in which decisions are made are carefully examined to explore their impact on our choices. The authors then consider whether we are all constrained to fall prey to cognitive biases or whether with sufficient exposure we can find optimal decision strategies and improve our decision making. This edition highlights advances made in judgment and decision making research with additional coverage of behavioral insights nudging artificial intelligence and explanation-based decision making. Written in a non-technical manner this book is an essential read for all students and researchers in cognitive psychology behavioral economics and the decision sciences as well as anyone interested in the nature of decision making. | Straight Choices The Psychology of Decision Making
