Poland and European East-West Cooperation in the 1970s The Opening Up

Poland and European East-West Cooperation in the 1970s The Opening Up

This book offers an international reading of the Polish socialist regime’s history in the 1970s and its opening up to the West. It bridges Poland’s socialist domestic history with critical developments of the global and European 1970s including détente in the Cold War western European integration and globalisation. In this period of international transformations socialist Poland under Edward Gierek's leadership multiplied its economic and political contacts with capitalist countries especially western Europe and became a leader of East-West cooperation among Council for Mutual Economic Assistance and Warsaw Pact members. Relying on sources from public and corporate archives in five different European states the book demonstrates both that the global political and economic transformations of that period were critical for the decision-making process in Poland and moreover that the national socialist elites participated in shaping these transformations. By looking at the goals and expectations of the Polish socialist elites and their practices of political and economic exchanges with western Europe the book explains the logic which drove the socialist regime into entanglement with the West. As is shown here this entanglement proved inextricable and critical for the socialist regime's failure and Poland’s political and economic future. This book will be of much interest to students of European history cold war studies socialism studies and International Relations. | Poland and European East-West Cooperation in the 1970s The Opening Up

‘Winner of the 2023 Selma Jeanne Cohen Prize in Dance Aesthetics The American Society for Aesthetics. ’ This book traces the history of engagements between dance and the visual arts in the mid-twentieth century and provides a backdrop for the emerging field of contemporary intermedial art practice. Exploring the disciplinary identity of dance in dialogue with the visual arts this book unpacks how compositional methods that were dance-based informed visual art contexts. The book provokes fresh consideration of the entangled relationship between and historiographic significance of visual arts and dance by exploring movements in history that dance has been traditionally mapped to (Neo-Avant Garde Neo-Dada Conceptual art Postmodernism and Performance Art) and the specific practices and innovations from key people in the field (like John Cage Anna Halprin and Robert Rauschenberg). This book also employs a series of historical and critical case studies which show how compositional approaches from dance—breath weight tone energy—informed the emergence of the intermedial. Ultimately this book shows how dance and choreography have played an important role in shaping visual arts culture and enables the re-imagination of current art practices through the use of choreographic tools. This unique and timely offering is important reading for those studying and researching in visual and fine arts performance history and theory dance practice and dance studies as well as those working within the fields of dance and visual art. Arab Oil Policies in the 1970s Opportunity and Responsibility

Arab Oil Policies in the 1970s Opportunity and Responsibility

Until 1973 few people either in the advanced industrial countries or in the developing countries of the Third World thought seriously on the issues and complexities involved in the production and marketing of the oil on which they relied. It was only with the sudden steep increases in oil prices that the oil industry became a matter of general discussion and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) became a front page topic for analysis and comment. However real understanding of the organisation and its policies did not accompany this rush of interest and much confusion has followed. In particular the Arab exporters have received the weight of the criticism although they have only a share in the market and not a monopoly. This book attempts to instil a greater mutual understanding between oil exporters and importers although it is not a wholesale endorsement of Arab policies by outlining the major policy areas in this field. It looks at new policy options and their implications in exploration marketing and pricing and at downstream operations such as the petrochemical and gas industries. In conclusion this study identifies the wide-ranging opportunities that the new oil policies have opened up for the Arab countries in the national regional and international context and assesses and clarifies the responsibilities which accompany this success. Childhood into Adolescence Growing up in the 1970s

Childhood into Adolescence Growing up in the 1970s

This book is about the lives of 11-year-old children growing up in a Midlands city in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Based on interviews with their parents it describes family life at the time as well as the experiences hopes and concerns of the children as they themselves become adolescents. The book reflects upon the changes that occur for children in the transitional period between childhood and adolescence. It looks at the friendship patterns of eleven-year-olds their special interests and activities and how they spend their leisure time as well as describing the children’s worries and concerns as perceived by their parents. It also considers family life and parental issues in the context of children’s growing independence and their developing sexual maturity. Originally written in the 1980’s but recently discovered and published now for the first time this is the fifth book in the series of long-term investigations of child up-bringing by John and Elizabeth Newson distinguished child psychologists at the University of Nottingham. Their research began in the late 1950s when the cohort of children was a year old; their mothers were subsequently interviewed at intervals as the children grew up. This fifth volume draws links between the material from interviews with parents when their sons and daughters were seven eleven sixteen and nineteen years and also invites comparison with the lives of children growing up now. The final chapter reviews the book series and the Newsons’ research programme. This exceptional book will be of interest to psychologists and other academics interested in child development as well as professionals involved in work with children and adolescents such as teachers doctors nurses and social workers. It also has great historical significance with its potential for comparisons between the lives of children and adolescents now with those growing up some 50 years ago. | Childhood into Adolescence Growing up in the 1970s
