The People of the Book Drama Fellowship and Religion

The People of the Book Drama Fellowship and Religion

Judaism has long derived its identity from its sacred books. The book or scroll - rather than the image or idol - has been emblematic of Jewish faith and tradition. The People of the Book presents a study of a group of Orthodox Jews all of whom live in the modern world engaged in the time-honored practice of lernen the repeated review and ritualized study of the sacred texts. In preserving one of the activities of Jewish life Samuel C. Heilman argues these are the genuine People of the Book. For two years Heilman participated in and observed five study circles in New York and Jerusalem engaged in the avocation of lernen the Talmud the great corpus of Jewish law lore and tradition. These groups made up of men who felt the ritualized study of sacred texts to be not only a religious obligation but also an appealing way to spend their evenings weekends and holidays assembled together under the guidance of a teacher to review the holy books of their people. Having become part of this world the author is able to provide first-hand observation of the workings of the study circle. Heilman's study moves beyond the merely descriptive into an analysis of the nature and meaning of activity he observed. To explain the character and appeal of the study groups he employs three concepts: drama fellowship and religion. Inherent to the life of the study circle are various sorts of drama: social dramas playing out social relationships cultural performances reenacting the Jewish world view and interactional dramas and word plays involving the intricacies of the recitation and translation process. This book will be of interest to anthropologists and those interested in the academic study of religion. | The People of the Book Drama Fellowship and Religion

The Latest Illustrated Book of Development Definitions

The Latest Illustrated Book of Development Definitions

Illustrated definitions are rarely found in zoning and development ordinances. Ordinances prefer the thousand words rather than the single picture. Illustrations greatly simplify how standards should be applied particularly where the lot or parcel is irregularly shaped or where there are a number of variables present each of which might have an impact on how the ordinance might apply in a specific situation. This best-selling resource has been the mainstay of the planner's bookshelf since its first publication and it differs from other books and publications containing development definitions in three major respects: It is illustrated; most of the definitions are designed to be used directly in ordinances with little or no change; and the more complex definitions are accompanied by commentaries and annotations that explain how the definition may be used in an ordinance along with background information pertinent to the definition. This expanded edition standardizes in one handy reference all the key terms used in zoning subdivision site plan and environmental ordinances. In all it contains 1 957 definitions and 103 illustrations that can be incorporated in local ordinances with little or no change. Written and illustrated by two professional planners with nearly eighty years of combined experience in the practice of planning and zoning this is a basic working tool and required reference for anyone involved in land development planning and regulation. | The Latest Illustrated Book of Development Definitions

Justice Education and the World of Today Philosophical Investigations

Justice Education and the World of Today Philosophical Investigations

This edited book challenges the limits of current educational philosophical discourse and argues for a restored normativisation of education through a powerful notion of justice. Moving beyond conventional paradigms of how justice and education relate the book rethinks the promotion of justice in for and through education in its current state. Chapters combine international and diverse philosophical perspectives with a focus on contemporary issues such as climate change the COVID-19 pandemic racism and migrant crises. Divided into three distinct parts the book explores the ontological and socio-political grounds underlying our notions of education and justice and offers self-reflective meta-critique on education philosophers’ tendency of promoting and upholding orthodox visions and missions. Ultimately the book offers contemporary and innovative philosophical reflections on the link between justice and education and enriches the discourse through a multi-perspectival and sensitive exploration of the topic. It will be of great interest to scholars researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of philosophy of education education policy and politics education studies and social justice. Transitional Justice in Aparadigmatic Contexts Accountability Recognition and Disruption

This book explores the practical and theoretical opportunities as well as the challenges raised by the expansion of transitional justice into new and ‘aparadigmatic’ cases. The book defines transitional justice as the pursuit of accountability recognition and/or disruption and applies an actor-centric analysis focusing on justice actors’ intentions of and responses to transitional justice. It offers a typology of different transitional justice contexts ranging from societies experiencing ongoing conflict to consolidated democracies and includes chapters from all types of aparadigmatic contexts. This covers transitional justice in states with contested political authority shared political authority and consolidated political authority. The transitional justice initiatives explored by the wide range of contributors are those of Afghanistan Belgium France Greenland/Denmark Libya Syria Turkey/Kurdistan UK/Iraq US and Yemen. Through these aparadigmatic case studies the book develops a new framework that appropriate to its expanding reach allows us to understand the practice of transitional justice in a more context-sensitive bottom-up and actor-oriented way which leaves room for the complexity and messiness of interventions on the ground. The book will appeal to scholars and practitioners in the broad field of transitional justice as represented in law criminology politics conflict studies and human rights.
