The U.S. Navy and the Rise of Great Power Competition Looking Beyond the Western Pacific

The U.S. Navy and the Rise of Great Power Competition Looking Beyond the Western Pacific

This volume describes how technological and geo-political trends are rapidly transforming maritime affairs. A mix of original and previously published material this volume describes how the 21st-century great power competition is changing the face of naval operations in general and U. S. Navy operations in the Western Pacific in particular. The rise of an assertive China and its new anti-access and area-denial capabilities threaten the aircraft carrier-based maritime dominance of the U. S. Navy. Military and political trends in the Western Pacific and beyond suggest that the world is encountering a pivotal moment when existing weapons tactics and operations might be rendered obsolete by techno-strategic change. This volume considers these developments from three perspectives by describing: (1) the techno-strategic setting; (2) the institutional constraints that impede the ability of the U. S. Navy to respond to these changes; and (3) a new approach to naval force planning and strategy to cope with these developments. The volume culminates in a discussion of sophisticated strategies and operational concepts that position the U. S. Navy and its maritime allies and partners to prevail in today’s techno-strategic churn. This book will be of much interest to students of naval policy strategic studies Asia-Pacific politics and International Relations. | The U. S. The Nordic Baltic and Visegrád Small Powers in Europe A Dance with Giants for Survival and Prosperity

This volume addresses and seeks to answer a number of questions on the current issues facing small states/powers in Europe. Are small state alliances within the EU useful to counterbalance the influence of the larger EU member states? How far should EU and NATO expansion go? Should it include countries such as Ukraine? Can the EU rely on US leadership of NATO for its security? How should small states relate to great powers seeking to influence Europe most notably the US the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation? Do smaller states need to choose a single ally among the major powers? Using an interdisciplinary approach the author discusses issues of economic policy international relations and politics economic and political integration as well as the effects of global and regional institutions and priorities in bilateral development cooperation demonstrating how policies are shaped by the interaction between small states (small powers) and large states (great powers). | The Nordic Baltic and Visegrád Small Powers in Europe A Dance with Giants for Survival and Prosperity

Developing Iran Company Towns Architecture and the Global Powers

Developing Iran Company Towns Architecture and the Global Powers

This book examines the emergence of modern company towns in Iran by delineating the architectural political and industrial histories of three distinct resource-based ‘company town’ projects built in association with the ‘Big Three’ powers of World War II. The book’s narrative builds upon a tripartite research design that chronologically traces the formation and development of the oil steel and copper industries respectively favoured by Great Britain the Soviet Union and the United States in this part of the world. By applying three sets of comparative studies the book provides critical vantage points to three different ideological design paradigms: postcolonial regionalism socialist universalism and rationalist modern nation building. From a global political context the book contributes to the disclosure of new information about the geopolitical confrontation of these three nations in the Global South to increase their sphere of influence after the Second World War. Furthermore it demonstrates how postwar architectural modernism was adopted by each power and adapted to their ideological mind frame to fulfil distinct social cultural political and economic targets. This book examines multiple interconnections between architecture politics and industrial development by adopting a transdisciplinary approach based on comprehensive fieldwork site surveys and the analysis of original multilingual documents. As such it will be of interest to researchers and students of architecture history international relations and Middle Eastern studies. | Developing Iran Company Towns Architecture and the Global Powers

The Origins Of The Great Leap Forward The Case Of One Chinese Province

The Rise of Universities

The Rise of Universities

At the time of its publication in 1923 Charles Homer Haskins' The Rise of Universities was considered remarkable for its erudition succinctness and balance. The his-torian Theodor Mommsen described it as a work which has remained unsurpassed in the conciseness and vividness of its account. Eight decades after its appearance it remains fresh and informative. It has not been surpassed and is as invaluable as ever. Haskins traces the rise of the mediaeval university as one phase of the intellectual awakening in Europe in the late Middle Ages in an effort to broaden our understanding of the ancient and universal company of scholars. In the depth and breadth of its analysis there is no better portrait of universities during their infancy in the Middle Ages. With great detail and preci-sion Haskins describes the university's curriculum teaching teachers and students. Drawing deeply on his knowledge as one of the leading mediaeval scholars of his day he provides an exceptionally vivid picture of student life of tht time through his analysis of their manuals letters and poetry. The Rise of Universities goes far beyond its central subject to offer a broad description of the social conditions in which universities took root and flourished. At the same time one cannot read Haskins without seeing the influences of the mediaeval university on contemporary institutions of higher learning. The Rise of Universities reminds us that the univer-sity has not only been a crucible fostering intellectual inquiry and creativity but continues after eight hundred years to be a center of teaching and learning. In his new introduction Lionel S. Lewis develops Haskins' passing observation that the university of the twentieth cen-tury is the lineal descendant of mediaeval Paris and Bologna and considers the question of why universities came into being at the particular time in history when they did. The Rise of the Universities will be of interest to educators and students who wish to better understand the institutions in which they have lived taught and been taught.

The Rise and Rise of Illegal Ticket Touting An Ethnography of Deviant Entrepreneurship

The Rise and Rise of Illegal Ticket Touting An Ethnography of Deviant Entrepreneurship

This book presents an ethnographic study of contemporary ticket touts in the UK. Despite the recent interest in the topic of black-market ticket sales media coverage and parliamentary interventions over the last ten years have revealed a widespread lack of knowledge with regard to the phenomenon of touting and the players engaging in the practice. The Rise and Rise of Illegal Ticket Touting sheds light on the world of touting and delivers an authentic picture of the individuals involved of their methods values and motivations for performing ticket touting as an organised entrepreneurial deviant activity. The touts’ varied methods of buying and selling tickets the hierarchical structures and strict ethos of their criminal organisations and their specific modi operandi for evading detection and arrest both on the streets and online are focal points of the study. Of equal importance are the touts’ attitudes perceptions and adaptations to (or outright dismissal of) society’s legal and moral frameworks. This book illuminates why historic and renewed attempts to challenge ticket touting have been unsuccessful focusing on inadequate legislation a lack of enforcement and the widespread corruption and exploitable loopholes that exist within the official primary ticket market. An accessible and compelling read The Rise and Rise of Illegal Ticket Touting will appeal to students and scholars of criminology sociology social policy policing and all those with an interest in live music and sport and the hidden practices that lurk beneath the surface. | The Rise and Rise of Illegal Ticket Touting An Ethnography of Deviant Entrepreneurship

Masculine Ideals and Alexander the Great An Exemplary Man in the Roman and Medieval World

Masculine Ideals and Alexander the Great An Exemplary Man in the Roman and Medieval World

From premodern societies onward humans have constructed and produced images of ideal masculinity to define the roles available for boys to grow into and images for adult men to imitate. The figure of Alexander the Great has fascinated people both within and outside academia. As a historical character military commander cultural figure and representative of the male gender Alexander’s popularity is beyond dispute. Almost from the moment of his death Alexander’s deeds have had a paradigmatic aspect: for over 2300 years he has been represented as a paragon of manhood – an example to be followed by other men – and through his myth people have negotiated assumptions about masculinity. This work breaks new ground by considering the ancient and medieval reception of Alexander the Great from a gender studies perspective. It explores the masculine ideals of the Greco-Roman and medieval pasts through the figure of Alexander the Great analysing the gendered views of masculinities in those periods and relating them to the ways in which Alexander’s masculinity was presented. It does this by investigating Alexander’s appearance and its relation to definitions of masculinity the way his childhood and adulthood are presented his martial performance and skill proper and improper sexual behaviour and finally through his emotions and mental attributes. Masculine Ideals and Alexander the Great will appeal to students and scholars alike as well as to those more generally interested in the portrayal of masculinity and gender particularly in relation to Alexander the Great and his image throughout history. Methodism and the Rise of Popular Literary Criticism Reviewing the Revival

Methodism and the Rise of Popular Literary Criticism Reviewing the Revival

This book examines how Methodism and popular review criticism intersected with and informed each other in the eighteenth century. Methodism emerged at a time when the idea of a ‘public square’ was taking shape a process facilitated by the periodical press. Perhaps more so than any previous religious movement Methodism and the publications associated with it received greater scrutiny largely because of periodical literature and the emergence of popular review criticism. The book considers in particular how works addressing Methodism were discussed and critiqued in the era’s two leading literary periodicals – The Monthly Review and The Critical Review. Focusing on the period between 1749 and 1789 the study encompasses the formative years of popular review criticism and some of the more dramatic moments in the textual culture of early Methodism. The author illustrates some of the specific ways these review journals diverged in their critical approaches and sensibilities as well as their politics and religious opinions. The Monthly’s and the Critical’s responses to the Methodists’ own publishing efforts as well as the anti-Methodist critique are shown to be both multifaceted and complex. The book critically reflects on the pretended neutrality reasonableness and objectivity of reviewers who at times found themselves negotiating between the desire to regulate literary tastes and the impulse to undermine the Methodist revival. It will be relevant to scholars of religion history and literary studies with an interest in Methodism print culture and the eighteenth century. | Methodism and the Rise of Popular Literary Criticism Reviewing the Revival
