Argentina’s Right-Wing Universe During the Democratic Period (1983–2023) Processes Actors and Issues

Argentina’s Right-Wing Universe During the Democratic Period (1983–2023) Processes Actors and Issues

Argentina’s Right-Wing Universe During the Democratic Period provides a comprehensive analysis of the course of right-wing politics in the country in the last 40 years. In 1983 after the fall of a violent military regime Argentina began the longest period of democratic stability in its history—40 years marked by economic institutional social and political crises. This book examines the trajectory of the different right-wing organisations and ideological developments during these years seeking to understand both the distinctions and the continuities that lie beneath its metamorphoses. Argentina has always acted as a laboratory in which to appreciate how the major problems and questions that concern those who have studied the right-wing in recent decades are translated into a particular political culture. In an international scenario marked by the social and political growth of different right-wing movements some of which pose a threat to liberal democracies the study of the Argentine case can provide greater clarity and a different perspective on problems that transcend this specific national case. This book will be of interest to scholars of Argentinian and Latin American politics and history as well as specialists on the comparative politics of the radical right. | Argentina’s Right-Wing Universe During the Democratic Period (1983–2023) Processes Actors and Issues

US Counterterrorism and the Human Rights of Foreigners Abroad Putting the Gloves Back On?

US Counterterrorism and the Human Rights of Foreigners Abroad Putting the Gloves Back On?

This book examines why the United States has introduced safeguards that are designed to prevent their counterterrorism policies from causing harm to non-US citizens beyond US territory. It investigates what made US policymakers take steps to put the gloves back on through five case studies on the emergence of such safeguards related to the right not to be tortured the right not to be arbitrarily detained the right to life (in connection with targeted killing operations) the right to seek asylum (in connection with refugee resettlement) and the right to privacy (in connection with foreign mass surveillance). The book exposes two mechanisms – coercion and strategic learning – which explain why the United States has introduced what the authors refer to as extraterritorial human rights safeguards thus demonstrating that the emerging norm that states have human rights obligations towards foreigners beyond their borders constrains policy choices. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of human rights counterterrorism US foreign policy human rights law and more broadly to political science and international relations. The Creation of Kazakh National Identity The Relationship with Russia 1900–2015

The Creation of Kazakh National Identity The Relationship with Russia 1900–2015

This monograph utilizes three theoretical models to explain Kazakhstan’s emergence as an independent state and its changing relationships with the broader world particularly Russia since the beginning of the twentieth century. The book first explores the construction of Kazakh national identity and the ways in which intellectuals appealed to history to substantiate their claims about Kazakhstan’s future. Secondly the narrative demonstrates that not all segments of totalitarian machinery work in unison. While terror reached its peak in the 1930s cultural and ideological control was not as rigid as it would become in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Most importantly the work is grounded in the study of the social universe. The book introduces the notion of “cosmos ” the peculiar connections between social economic and political forces. While not necessarily directly dependent on each other they nevertheless created a unique interplay among the segments of societal structures and the state’s relationship with the wider universe. Taking this framework as the point of departure this research analyzes Kazakhstan’s “multi-vectorism” as uniquely fit to contemporary global arrangements when no global power dominates and the lines between friend and foe are blurred. This compelling approach to Kazakhstan’s history will appeal to postgraduate students and scholars in Russian history and world history. | The Creation of Kazakh National Identity The Relationship with Russia 1900–2015

The Secret Army The IRA

The Secret Army The IRA

The Secret Army is the definitive work on the Irish Republican Army. It is an absorbing account of a movement that has had a profound effect on the shaping of the modern Irish state. The secret army in the service of the invisible Republic has had a powerful effect on Irish events over the past twenty-five years. These hidden corridors of power interest Bell and inspired him to spend more time with the IRA than many volunteers spend in it. This book is the culmination of twenty-five years of work and tens of thousands of hours of interviews. Bell's unique access to the leadership of the republican movement and his contacts with all involved British politicians Irish politicians policemen arms smugglers and others committed or opposed to the IRA explain why The Secret Army is the book on the subject. This edition represents a complete revision and includes vast quantities of new information. Bell's book gives us vital insight into our times as well as Irish history. This edition of The Secret Army contains six new chapters that bring the history of this clandestine organization up to date. They are: The First Decade The Nature of the Long War 1979-1980; Unconventional Conflict The Hunger Strikes January 1980-October 3 1981; The Protracted Struggle September 1981-January 1984; War Politics and the Split January 1984-December 1986; The Troubles as Institution 1987-1990: and The Armed Struggle Transformed 1991-1996 The End Game. In his new introduction Bell reflects on his decades of research the experiences he has had and the people he has met during his extensive visits to Ireland. | The Secret Army The IRA

Power and Representation in Byzantium The Forging of the Macedonian Dynasty

Power and Representation in Byzantium The Forging of the Macedonian Dynasty

Throughout the history of Byzantium 65 emperors were dethroned and only 39 reigns ended peacefully. How might a usurper get away with murdering his predecessor? And how could a bloody act of regicide lead to one of the most glorious of all eras in Byzantium? These were questions that puzzled Michael Psellos as he looked back at Basil I’s assassination of Michael III and the origin of the Macedonian dynasty. Might the imperial art of Basil his sons and grandson help to explain how the dynasty overcame its violent beginnings and secured the loyalty of its subjects? It has long been recognised that the early Macedonian emperors were active propagandists but royal art has usually been viewed thematically over the span of centuries. Official iconography has been understood to project imperial power in ways which were impersonal and unchanging. This book instead adopts a chronological approach and considers how Basil justified his seizure of power and how his successors went on to articulate their own ideas about authority. It concludes that imperial art did at times reflect the personality of the emperor and the political demands of the moment such as the need for an heir the nature of court politics or the choice of successor. This innovative account of the forging of the Macedonian dynasty will appeal to those interested in how early medieval kings and emperors used art to create their own image to differentiate themselves from rivals and to extend the boundaries of their personal power. | Power and Representation in Byzantium The Forging of the Macedonian Dynasty
