The Political Economy of Education Reforms in Vietnam

The Political Economy of Education Reforms in Vietnam

This book drawing on a political economic perspective of education development is a comprehensive account of the question why some education systems flourish while others falter. It provides a state-of-the-art review of the Vietnamese way of education development figuring out the pitfalls challenges and opportunities of neoliberal reform. It also sheds new light on the rise of neoliberal capitalism in contemporary Vietnam as the country intensifies its market-oriented economic transition. Starting from educational development concerns this book differentiates the growth and development concepts in education. While growth with limited development is well reflected in many developing education systems the Vietnamese experience of education development stands to provide readers with unique insights about education in developing economies especially in understanding how a socialist-oriented education system is struggling to thrive in the times of neoliberal capitalism. Authored by scholars specialising in Vietnamese education and politics the chapters address key issues pertaining to the political economy of education reform in Vietnam and the government’s enduring efforts to drive education toward international standards through its costly market-infused education reforms. Discourse Particles in Asian Languages Volume II Southeast Asia

Discourse Particles in Asian Languages Volume II Southeast Asia

This volume is the second in a two-part collection of research on discourse particles focusing exclusively on the languages of Asia from the perspective of formal as well as non-formal semantics and pragmatics. Despite increasing interest in discourse particles most research in the area (particularly within formal semantics and pragmatics) focuses on a restricted set of languages and there has been little consensus on the proper formal treatment of particles. The term discourse particles has been used to cover a broad range of phenomena including such things as sentence-final particles discourse adverbs and other related phenomena. In recent years there has been extensive development of the formal approach to discourse particles which often treats these words as devices for marking information updates. It is vital however to extend this data to non-Western languages like Malay Thai or Vietnamese. These two volumes are the first to give an exclusive focus on particles in non-European languages (in this case Asian languages) from the perspective of formal and non-formal semantics and pragmatics. This second volume includes chapters on Tagalog Kimaragang Dusun (Malaysia) Malay Singlish (Colloquial Singapore English) Thai and Vietnamese. The chapters are informed by recent theoretical work in formal and non-formal semantics and pragmatics relating to the meaning of particles. The collection contributes to our theoretical understanding of the meaning of discourse particles and to empirical knowledge of discourse particles in the languages of Asia. It will be of interest to postgraduate students and scholars of semantics and pragmatics. | Discourse Particles in Asian Languages Volume II Southeast Asia

The Socioeconomics of Nationalism in China Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

The Socioeconomics of Nationalism in China Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

This book analyzes Chinese nationalism from the perspective of social economics. It posits a conceptual framework in which national status is treated as a luxury while material consumption is considered as a necessity in people’s preferences which implies that popular nationalism tends to increase with economic development. The book extensively uses the tools of game theory and behavioral economics to analyze inter-ethnical and international conflicts in historical and contemporary China. The author’s economic approach to the subject of nationalism brings fresh and critical insights into the Chinese historical events and relations with foreign countries. For example it helps resolve the following puzzles: Why did most Chinese support an ethnic minority the Manchus to be their ruler after the collapse of the Ming dynasty? In the Boxer Rebellion why did the Qing dynasty declare war against more than eight foreign powers when it knew well that any of the countries could defeat China easily? What are the fundamental causes of the 1962 Sino-Indian War and the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War? Who is responsible for the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade? This book attempts to answer the questions based on the theories of social economics and rational choice which will interest those researching on nationalism China studies international relations history and political economy. | The Socioeconomics of Nationalism in China Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

Discourse Particles in Asian Languages Volume I East Asia

Discourse Particles in Asian Languages Volume I East Asia

This is the first of two volumes of research on discourse particles focusing exclusively on the languages of Asia from the perspective of formal as well as non-formal semantics and pragmatics. Within linguistics there has been a great deal of interest in discourse particles especially within semantics and pragmatics. The term ‘discourse particles’ has been used to cover a broad range of phenomena including such things as ‘sentence-final particles ’ ‘discourse adverbs ’ and other related phenomena. However most research in the area (particularly within formal semantics and pragmatics) focuses on a restricted set of languages and there is little consensus on the proper formal treatment of particles partly due to the limited range of data available. In recent years there has been extensive development of the formal approach to discourse particles which often treats these words as devices for marking information updates. It is also vital to extend this data to non-Western languages like Japanese Korean or Chinese. This edited volume includes chapters on Japanese Mandarin Tagalog Kimaragang Dusun Malay Singlish Thai and Vietnamese. The chapters are informed by recent theoretical work in formal semantics and pragmatics relating to the meaning of particles. The collection contributes to our theoretical understanding of the meaning of discourse particles and to empirical knowledge of discourse particles in the languages of Asia.
