The Chronicle of a People's War: The Military and Strategic History of the Cambodian Civil War 1979–1991

The Chronicle of a People's War: The Military and Strategic History of the Cambodian Civil War 1979–1991 narrates the military and strategic history of the Cambodian Civil War especially the People’s Republic of Kampuchea (PRK) from when it deposed the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime in 1979 until the political settlement in 1991. The PRK survived in the face of a fierce insurgency due to three factors: an appealing and reasonably well-implemented political program extensive political indoctrination and the use of a hybrid army. In this hybrid organization the PRK relied on both its professional conventional army and the militia-like territorial army. This latter type was lightly equipped and most soldiers were not professional. Yet the militia made up for these weaknesses with its intimate knowledge of the local terrain and its political affinity with the local people. These two advantages are keys to victory in the context of counterinsurgency warfare. The narrative and critical analysis is driven by extensive interviews and primary source archives that have never been accessed before by any scholar including interviews with former veterans (battalion commanders brigade commanders division commanders commanders of provincial military commands commanders of military regions and deputy chiefs of staff) articles in the People’s Army from 1979 to 1991 battlefield footage battlefield video reports newsreel propaganda video and official publications of the Cambodian Institute of Military History.

Women Peace and Security in Nepal From Civil War to Post-Conflict Reconstruction

Women Peace and Security in Nepal From Civil War to Post-Conflict Reconstruction

This book sheds new light on the important but diverse roles of women in the civil war in Nepal (1996-2006) and the post-conflict reconstruction period (2006-2016). Engaging critically with the women peace and security literature Women Peace and Security in Nepal questions the potential of peace processes to become a window of opportunity for women’s empowerment while insisting on the vital importance of a gender perspective in the study of conflict security and peace. After the signing of the 2006 Comprehensive Peace Accord Nepal experienced a huge leap in women’s political representation in the subsequent Constituent Assembly often portrayed as a landmark victory for women’s empowerment in the context of South Asia. Nepali women’s mobilization played a key role in this success story though similar mobilization has failed to produce the same outcomes elsewhere in South Asia. How does Nepal differ from the other cases? Presenting studies of war-time and post-conflict Nepal through a gender lens this book critically assesses the argument that war and peacebuilding can add momentum to the transformation of gender roles. Contributing new knowledge on women’s disempowerment and empowerment in conflict and peacebuilding the book also offers insights for contemporary debate on gender and political change in conflict-affected societies. This book will be of great interest to students of peace and conflict studies gender security South Asia and international relations in general as well as policy-makers and NGOs. | Women Peace and Security in Nepal From Civil War to Post-Conflict Reconstruction

Travellers and Cosmographers Studies in the History of Early Modern Travel and Ethnology

Travellers and Cosmographers Studies in the History of Early Modern Travel and Ethnology

Joan-Pau Rubiés brings together here eleven studies published between 1991 and 2005 that illuminate the impact of travel writing on the transformation of early modern European culture. The new worlds that European navigation opened up at the turn of the 16th century elicited a great deal of curiosity and were the subject of a vast range of writings much of them with an empirical basis albeit often subtly fictionalized. In the context of intense literary and intellectual activity that characterized the Renaissance the encounters generated by European colonial activities in fact produced a remarkable variety of images of human diversity. Some of these images were conditioned by the actual dynamics of cross-cultural encounters overseas but many others were elaborated in Europe by cosmographers historians and philosophers pursuing their own moral and political agendas. As the studies included here show the combined effect was in the long term dramatic: interacting with the impact of humanism and of insurmountable religious divisions travel writing decisively contributed to the transformation of European culture towards the concerns of the Enlightenment. The essays illuminate this process through a combination of general discussions and the contextual analysis of particular texts and debates ranging form the earliest ethnographies produced by merchants travelling to Asia with Vasco da Gama to the writings of Jesuit missionaries researching idolatry in India and China or thinkers like Hugo Grotius seeking to explain the origin of the American Indians. | Travellers and Cosmographers Studies in the History of Early Modern Travel and Ethnology

Collision of Empires Italy's Invasion of Ethiopia and its International Impact

Collision of Empires Italy's Invasion of Ethiopia and its International Impact

Italy's invasion of Ethiopia in 1935 marked a turning point in interwar Europe. The last great European colonial conquest in Africa the conflict represented an enormous gamble for the Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. He faced a challenge not only from a stout Ethiopian defence but also from difficult logistics made worse by the League of Nations' half-hearted sanctions. Mussolini faced down this opposition and Italian troops aided by air superiority and liberal use of yprite gas conquered Addis Ababa within eight months a victory that shocked many military observers of the time with its speed and suddenness. The invasion had enormous repercussions on European international relations. In the midst of a national election campaign the British National Government had felt constrained to support the League despite fears that sanctions through the League could lead to war with Italy. The concentration of the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean Sea alienated Mussolini and placed the French government on the horns of dilemma; should France support its military partner Italy or its more important potential ally Great Britain? French attempts to mark out a middle ground did little to placate the Duce and the crisis seemed to develop a deep rift between Fascist Italy and the Anglo-French democracies while at the same time creating a crisis in Anglo-French relations. Mussolini turned towards Nazi Germany in an attempt to end his diplomatic isolation during the sanctions episode although Hitler considered the Duce's friendship a mixed blessing. The question of American adherence to sanctions increased ill will between British politicians and the Roosevelt administration in Washington as each tended to blame the other for the failure of oil sanctions and the collapse of collective security. The international crisis posed similarly thorny problems for the smaller powers of Europe and for Japan and the Soviet Union. The crisis impeded common defence against Fascist expansionism while giving impetus to claims of the revisionist powers. Despite the tremendous importance of the international crisis however little new work on the subject has appeared in recent decades. In this volume an international cast of contributors take a fresh look at the crisis through the lens of new evidence and new approaches to international relations history to provide the most comprehensive coverage of the crisis currently possible and their work provides new frames of reference for exploring imperialism collective security and genocide. | Collision of Empires Italy's Invasion of Ethiopia and its International Impact

Leadership in the Construction Industry Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World

Leadership in the Construction Industry Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World

This book presents a new framework for leadership in the construction industry which draws from the authentic leadership construct. The framework has three major themes: self-leadership self-transcendent leadership and sustainable leadership. Despite its significance leadership has not been given due importance in the construction industry as focus is placed on managerial functionalism. At the project level even with the technological advances in the industry in recent years construction is realized in the form of people undertaking distinct interdependent activities which require effective leadership. The industry faces many challenges including: demanding client requirements and project parameters; more stringent regulations codes and systems; intense competition in the industry; and threats from disruptive enterprise. In such a complex environment technology-driven and tool-based project and corporate management is insufficient. It must be complemented by a strategic genuine stakeholder-focused and ethical leadership. Leadership in the Construction Industry is based on a study on authentic leadership and its development in Singapore. Leadership theories and concepts are reviewed; the importance of leadership in the construction industry is discussed; and the grounded theory approach which was applied in the study is explained. Many eminent construction professionals in Singapore were interviewed in the field study. Emerging from the experiences of the leaders documented in this book are three major themes: (1) self-leadership: how leaders engage in various self-related processes such as self-awareness self-regulation and role modeling. (2) self-transcendent leadership: how leaders go beyond leading themselves to leading others through servant leadership shared leadership spiritual leadership and socially-responsible leadership; and finally (3) sustainable leadership or the strategies leaders employ to make the impact of their leadership lasting. A synthesis of these themes and their implications for leadership development is presented before the book concludes with some recommendations for current and aspiring leaders about how they can engage with them. This book is essential reading for all construction practitioners from all backgrounds; and researchers on leadership and management in construction. | Leadership in the Construction Industry Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World

German Façade Design Traditions of Screening from 1500 to Modernism

German Façade Design Traditions of Screening from 1500 to Modernism

German architecture prior to the modern period has received less systemic analytical study than that of Italy France and Britain. Scholarly discussion of broad traditions or continuities within Germanic or Central European façade design is even sparser. Baroque era studies of the region mostly devote themselves to isolated architects monuments or movements. Modernism's advent decisively changed this: Germanic architecture enjoyed sudden ascendancy. Yet even so study specifically of that region's façades still lagged – nothing compares to the dozens of treatments of Le Corbusier's façade systems for example and how these juxtapose with French neoclassical or Italian Renaissance methods. Given the paucity of multi-period studies one can be forgiven for believing Germany's effervescence of radical modern works seems unprecedented. This book takes up these multiple quandaries. It identifies and documents a previously unrecognized compositional tradition - characterized here as the 'screen façade' – and posits it as a counter-narrative critiquing the essentialist 'authentic' canon currently dominant in Western architectural history. By crossing evenly over the dividing line between the historical and modern periods it offers valuable insights on indigenous roots underlying some aspects of Germany's invigorating early twentieth-century architectural developments. The book chronologically examines 400 years of closely related facades concentrated in Germany but also found in Austria the Czech Republic German-speaking Switzerland and nearby areas of Central Europe. While nearly 75 buildings are mentioned and illustrated a dozen are given extensive analysis and the book focuses on the works of three architects – Schinkel Behrens and Mies. Relationships between examples of these three architects' façades far transcend mere homage amongst masters. Glimmers of the system they eventually codify are apparent as early as at Heidelberg Castle in 1559 and Nürnberg's Rathaus in 1622. The book argues that in Germany northern Gothic affinities for bisection intense repetition and rote aggregation intersected with southern Classical affinities for symmetry hierarchy and centrality thereby spawning a unique hybrid product – the screen. Instead of graphic formality this study is guided by on-site perceptions propositional contrasts means of approach interpretive conflicts and emotion and it relates the design of these façades to concepts proposed by contemporary philosophers including Novalis Hegel Nietzsche Freud Adorno and most importantly Gadamer on hermeneutics. | German Façade Design Traditions of Screening from 1500 to Modernism
