Towards a Critique of Architecture’s Contemporaneity 4 Essays

Towards a Critique of Architecture’s Contemporaneity 4 Essays

Pursuing historical analogies between nineteenth-century theories and the current practices captivated by digital reproducibility this book offers a critical take on architecture’s contemporaneity through four essays: tectonics materiality cladding and labor. Fundamental to this proposition is the historicity of Gottfried Semper’s theorization of architecture amidst the outpouring of new materials and construction techniques during the 1850s. Starting with Semper’s differentiation between theatricalization and the tectonic of theatricality this book examines thematic essential to architecture’s self-representation. Even though the title of this book recalls the Semperian Four Elements of Architecture its argument encapsulates a unique historico-theoretical project probing the tectonic of theatricality beyond Semper. The invisible tie between technique and labor is the cord running through the four subjects covered in this book. In exploring these subjects from the theoretical standpoint of Marxian dialectics this book’s contribution is focused on but not limited to the topicality of labor today when its relationship with capital has been further obscured by the prevailing digitalization of commodity exchange value starting roughly in the 1990s. Each essay examines Semper’s theorization of architecture in contradistinction to the ways in which technology’s mediation has dominated architecture’s representation. Burrowing through the invisible tie between technique and work asymptomatic of architecture’s predicament in global capitalism Towards a Critique of Architecture’s Contemporaneity advances the scope of architectural criticism beyond the exhausted formalism and architecture’s turn to philosophy circa the 1980s and the present tendencies for presentism. It will therefore be of interest to researchers and students of architectural history and theory. | Towards a Critique of Architecture’s Contemporaneity 4 Essays

Art and Liberation Collected Papers of Herbert Marcuse Volume 4

Art and Liberation Collected Papers of Herbert Marcuse Volume 4

The role of art in Marcuse’s work has often been neglected misinterpreted or underplayed. His critics accused him of a religion of art and aesthetics that leads to an escape from politics and society. Yet as this volume demonstrates Marcuse analyzes culture and art in the context of how it produces forces of domination and resistance in society and his writings on culture and art generate the possibility of liberation and radical social transformation. The material in this volume is a rich collection of many of Marcuse’s published and unpublished writings interviews and talks including ‘Lyric Poetry after Auschwitz’ reflections on Proust and Letters on Surrealism; a poem by Samuel Beckett for Marcuse’s eightieth birthday with exchange of letters; and many articles that explore the role of art in society and how it provides possibilities for liberation. This volume will be of interest to those new to Marcuse generally acknowledged as a major figure in the intellectual and social milieus of the 1960s and 1970s as well as to the specialist giving access to a wealth of material from the Marcuse Archive in Frankfurt and his private collection in San Diego some of it published here in English for the first time. A comprehensive introduction by Douglas Kellner reflects on the genesis development and tensions within Marcuse’s aesthetic while an afterword by Gerhard Schweppenhäuser summarizes their relevance for the contemporary era. | Art and Liberation Collected Papers of Herbert Marcuse Volume 4

Conscious and Unconscious Mentality Examining their Nature Similarities and Differences

Conscious and Unconscious Mentality Examining their Nature Similarities and Differences

In this collection of essays experts in the field of consciousness research shed light on the intricate relationship between conscious and unconscious states of mind. Advancing the debate on consciousness research this book puts centre stage the topic of commonalities and differences between conscious and unconscious contents of the mind. The collection of cutting-edge chapters offers a breadth of research perspectives with some arguing that unconscious states have been unjustly overlooked and deserve recognition for their richness and wide scope. Others contend that significant differences between conscious and unconscious states persist highlighting the importance of their distinct characteristics. Explorations into the nature of the transition from unconscious to conscious mind further complicate the picture with some authors questioning whether a sharp divide between unconscious and conscious states truly exists. Delving into ontological epistemological and methodological issues this thought-provoking text challenges established paradigms and paves the way for a reimagining of consciousness research. It does so in an understandable and accessible way making this a perfect companion for both experts and students of philosophy psychology and related fields.
