Men Masculinities and Intermarriage in Ezra 9-10

Men Masculinities and Intermarriage in Ezra 9-10

Offering a reading of the intermarriage debate and expulsion of the foreign women in Ezra 9-10 this book engages with the production and performance of masculinities in this biblical text shifting the focus away from the 'foreign women' to the men who are the primary actors in this work. This approach addresses the diversity of masculinities and the ways in which they are implicated in the production of power relations in the text. It explores the ‘feminized’ masculinity of the peoples-of-the-lands the unstable masculinity of the golah Ezra’s performance of penitential masculinity and the rehabilitation of divine masculinity. The rejection of the marriages and the call for the expulsion of the women and children are addressed as sites on which masculinities and power relations are configured. In doing so this book sheds light on how women and the traits and performances culturally ascribed to women femininity and inferior masculinities are appropriated to produce masculinities and negotiate power relations between men. It posits that the debate in Ezra 9-10 is not ultimately about the women themselves but about bringing the masculinities bodies and practices of dissenting men under the ‘management’ of those who wield the Torah in the narrative world of the text. Men Masculinities and Intermarriage in Ezra-9-10 is of interest for scholars and students working on the Book of Ezra specifically as well as the Hebrew Bible and its world more broadly. It is also a valuable study for those working on masculinities and gender in the biblical world and ancient Near East. | Men Masculinities and Intermarriage in Ezra 9-10

Life at Home for People with a Dementia

Life at Home for People with a Dementia provides an evidence-based and readable account of improving life at home for people with a dementia and their families. There are estimated to be 47 million people with a dementia worldwide the majority of whom will live or want to live in their own home. Yet there is a major shortcoming in available knowledge on what life is like for people with a dementia living at home. Most research focuses on care in hospitals or care homes and takes a medical perspective. This book bridges this gap in knowledge by providing a comprehensive and critical overview of the best available evidence on enabling people with a dementia to live well at home from the viewpoint of those living with the condition and in the context of global policy drivers on ageing and health as well as technological advances. The book includes chapters on citizenships – that is the diversity of people living with a dementia – enabling life at home rethinking self-management the ethics and care of people with a dementia at home technological care and citizenship and sharing responsibilities. It concludes with a care manifesto in which we set out a vision for improving life at home for people with a dementia that covers the areas of professional practice education and care research. By covering a wide range of interrelated topics to advance understanding and practice as to how people with a dementia from diverse backgrounds can be supported to live well at home this book provides a synthesised critical and readable understanding of the complexities and risks involved.

Accounting at War The Politics of Military Finance

Accounting at War The Politics of Military Finance

Accounting is frequently portrayed as a value free mechanism for allocating resources and ensuring they are employed in the most efficient manner. Contrary to this popular opinion the research presented in Accounting at War demonstrates that accounting for military forces is primarily a political practice. Throughout history military force has been so pervasive that no community of any degree of complexity has succeeded in. Through to the present day for all nation states accounting for the military and its operations has primarily served broader political purposes. From the Crimean War to the War on Terror accounting has been used to assert civilian control over the military instill rational business practices on war and create the visibilities and invisibilities necessary to legitimize the use of force. Accounting at War emphasizes the significant power that financial and accounting controls gave to political elites and the impact of these controls on military performance. Accounting at War examines the effects of these controls in wars such as the Crimean South African and Vietnam wars. Accounting at War also emphasizes how accounting has provided the means to rationalize and normalize violence which has often contributed to the acceleration and expansion of war. Aimed at researchers and academics in the fields of accounting accounting history political management and sociology Accounting at War represents a unique and critical perspective to this cutting-edge research field. | Accounting at War The Politics of Military Finance
