Lords and Towns in Medieval Europe The European Historic Towns Atlas Project

Lords and Towns in Medieval Europe The European Historic Towns Atlas Project

This volume is based on possibly the biggest single Europe-wide project in urban history. In 1955 the International Commission for the History of Towns established the European historic towns atlas project in accordance with a common scheme in order to encourage comparative urban studies. Although advances in urban archaeology since the 1960s have highlighted the problematic relationship between the oldest extant town plan and the actual origins of a town the large-scale cadastral maps as they have been made available by the European historic towns atlas project are still necessary if we want to understand the evolution of the physical form of our towns. By 2014 the project consisted of over 500 individual publications from over 18 different countries across Europe. Each atlas comprises at least a core-map at the scale of 1:2500 analytical maps and an explanatory text. The time has come to use this enormous database that has been compiled over the last 40 years. This volume itself based on a conference related to this topic that was held in the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin in 2006 takes up this challenge. The focus of the volume is on the question of how seigneurial power influenced the creation of towns in medieval Europe and of how this process in turn influenced urban form. Part I of the volume addresses two major issues: the history of the use of town plans in urban research and the methodological challenges of comparative urban history. Parts II and III constitute the core of the book focusing on the dynamic relationship between lordship and town planning in the core area of medieval Europe and on the periphery. In Part IV the symbolic meaning of town plans for medieval people is discussed. Part V consists of critical contributions by an archaeologist an art historian and an historical geographer. By presenting case studies by leading researchers from different European countries this volume combines findings that were hitherto not available in English | Lords and Towns in Medieval Europe The European Historic Towns Atlas Project

The Atlas of Migration in Europe A Critical Geography of Migration Policies

The Atlas of Migration in Europe A Critical Geography of Migration Policies

This book follows the journeys of those fleeing war poverty or political crises risking their lives as they attempt to find sanctuary in Europe. Over the past 25 years almost 40 000 migrants have been reported missing or died due to drowning or exhaustion on the borders of Europe. 6 000 migrants died in 2016 alone making it the deadliest year on record. Growing numbers of arrivals since 2015 have caused a wave of panic to sweep across the countries of the European Union which has responded with an increasingly entrenched policy – the only one it considers appropriate – of fortifying its external borders. As a result numerous walls and fences have sprung up to regulate the flows new camps have been opened and reception centres have been set up beyond the frontiers of Europe all accompanied by the steady militarisation of surveillance and repression. The EU has thus been just as active in precipitating this migrant crisis as it has been in prolonging its effects. Indeed this crisis calls into question the entire European system for border management and policies on immigration and reception. Deconstructing preconceptions changing the way we see others probing borders and mapping the nexus of control and detention the collection of articles maps photographs and illustrations in this Atlas provide an important critical geography of migration policies. Perfect for journalists activists students of geopolitics at school or university this Atlas seeks above all to give migrants a voice. | The Atlas of Migration in Europe A Critical Geography of Migration Policies

Qualitative Analysis Using ATLAS.ti The Five-Level QDA Method

Qualitative Analysis Using ATLAS.ti The Five-Level QDA Method

Software is cut-and-dried – every button you press has a predictable effect – but qualitative analysis is open-ended and unfolds in unpredictable ways. This contradiction is best resolved by separating analytic strategies – what you plan to do – from software tactics – how you plan to do it. Expert ATLAS. ti users have unconsciously learned to do this. The Five-Level QDA® method unpacks the process so that you can learn it consciously and efficiently. The first part of the book explains how the contradiction between analytic strategies and software tactics is reconciled by translating between them. The second part provides both an in-depth description of how ATLAS. ti works and comprehensive instruction in the five steps of translation. these steps are illustrated with examples from a variety of research projects. The third part contains real-world qualitative research projects from a variety of disciplines methodologies and kinds of qualitative analysis all illustrated in ATLAS. ti using the Five-Level QDA method. The book is accompanied by three sets of videos demonstrations on the Companion Website. While this book uses screenshots from the current ATLAS. ti Version 8 it is still fully applicable to users of older versions. The book and accompanying videos illustrate the Windows version of ATLAS. ti. As there are some differences in screen and interface design between the Mac and Windows versions please watch the video 'The ATLAS. ti Mac Interface' in the Component Orientation series of videos (available September 2017) The Five-Level QDA method is based on the authors’ combined 40 years of experience teaching ATLAS. ti and other software packages used as platforms for conducting qualitative analysis. After many years observing their students’ challenges they developed the Five-Level QDA method to describe the process that long-time ATLAS. ti experts unconsciously adopt. The Five-Level QDA method is independent of software program or methodology and the principles apply to any type of qualitative project. Dramatic Dialogue Contemporary Clinical Practice

Dramatic Dialogue Contemporary Clinical Practice

In Dramatic Dialogue Atlas and Aron develop the metaphors of drama and theatre to introduce a new way of thinking about therapeutic action and therapeutic traction. This model invites the patient’s many self-states and the numerous versions of the therapist’s self onto the analytic stage to dream a mutual dream and live together the past and the future as they appear in the present moment. The book brings together the relational emphasis on multiple self-states and enactment with the Bionian conceptions of reverie and dreaming-up the patient. The term Dramatic Dialogue originated in Ferenczi’s clinical innovations and refers to the patient and therapist dramatizing and dreaming-up the full range of their multiple selves. Along with Atlas and Aron readers will become immersed in a Dramatic Dialogue which the authors elaborate and enact using the contemporary language of multiple self-states waking dreaming dissociation generative enactment and the prospective function. The book provides a rich description of contemporary clinical practice illustrated with numerous clinical tales and detailed examination of clinical moments. Inspired by Bion’s concept of becoming-at-one and at-one-ment the authors call for a return of the soul or spirit to psychoanalysis and the generative use of the analyst’s subjectivity including a passionate use of mind body and soul in the pursuit of psychoanalytic truth. Dramatic Dialogue will be of great interest to all psychoanalysts and psychotherapists. | Dramatic Dialogue Contemporary Clinical Practice
