Macroeconomic Modelling Economic Policy and Methodology Economics at the Edge

Macroeconomic Modelling Economic Policy and Methodology Economics at the Edge

Demonstrating that there are (superior) alternatives to the modern macroeconomic mainstream and its DSGE (dynamic stochastic general equilibrium) models this book presents the cutting edge in macroeconomic modelling economic policy and methodology from the perspective of heterodox economic thinking. The first part of the book explores methodological issues advocating for a stronger ethical consideration in macroeconomics and for the adoption of a strategy of pluralism to ensure that macroeconomic theory is capable of adapting to real-world issues. The second part highlights recent trends in empirical Stock-Flow Consistent models by collecting a group of the most well-developed empirical models of five different economies: the Danish the Dutch the French the Italian and the Argentinian models. In all five cases the models are used to discuss various policy aspects of the individual economies. Finally the book explores issues of macroeconomic policy which are largely neglected by mainstream economists including financial (in)stability and macro imbalances. The book emphasizes the need for investigating sectoral balances which are crucial elements for investigating imbalances from the heterodox perspective. This book will be of significant interest to students and scholars of macroeconomics economic modelling economic methodology and heterodox economics more broadly. | Macroeconomic Modelling Economic Policy and Methodology Economics at the Edge

Prostitutes Hostesses and Actresses at the Edge of the Japanese Empire Fragmenting History

Prostitutes Hostesses and Actresses at the Edge of the Japanese Empire Fragmenting History

Analysing materials from literature and film this book considers the fates of women who did not or could not buy into the Japanese imperial ideology of good wives wise mothers in support of male empire-building. Although many feminist critics have articulated women’s active roles as dutiful collaborators for the Japanese empire male-dominated narratives of empire-building have been largely supported and rectified. In contrast the roles of marginalized women such as sex workers women entertainers hostesses and hibakusha have rarely been analyzed. This book addresses this intellectual lacuna by closely examining memories (semi-)autobiographical stories and newspaper articles grounded or inspired by lived experiences not only in Japan but also in Shanghai Manchukuo colonial Korea and the Pacific. Chapters further explore the voices of diasporic Korean women (Zainichi Korean woman born in Japan as well as Korean American woman born in Korea) whose lives were impacted intervening ethnocentric narratives that were at the heart of the Japanese empire. An appendix presents the first English translation of a memorable statement on comfort women by former Japanese propaganda actress Ri Kōran / Yamaguchi Yoshiko. Prostitutes Hostesses and Actresses at the Edge of the Japanese Empire will appeal to students and scholars of Japanese literature and film studies as well as gender sexuality and postcolonial studies. | Prostitutes Hostesses and Actresses at the Edge of the Japanese Empire Fragmenting History

Psychoanalysis on the Verge of Language Clinical Cases on the Edge

Psychoanalysis on the Verge of Language Clinical Cases on the Edge

This book examines the importance of language and writing in psychoanalytic theory and practice offering an understanding of how language works can give a deeper insight into the psyche both in clinical practice and everyday life. Bringing together psychoanalytic insights that hinge on the language of difficult cases this collection also includes contributions dedicated to meta-study of psychoanalytic writing. The first chapter shows how music includes tonal regions that deploy existing rules and syntax alongside atonal ones dominated by caesuras pauses and tensions. The second chapter discusses the malignant ambiguity of revealing and concealing typical of incestuous situations pinpointing how the ambiguous language of incest deceives by means of the truth . The third chapter brings in Virginia Woolf’s character Orlando in order to illustrate two types of gender crossing. Distinctions defined by the linguist Roman Jakobson help in the fourth chapter to offer an integrative description of obsessive-compulsive phenomenon as an interaction between metaphoric and metonymic dimensions as well as with a third psychotic dimension. The fifth chapter focuses on what is called the screen confessions typical of the perpetrator’s language. George Orwell’s newspeak is used here to decipher the specific means by which the perpetrator turns his or her inner witness into a blind one. The final chapter uses Roland Barthes’ concepts of studium and punctum to discuss the limits of psychoanalytic writing. As a whole this book sets the psychoanalytic importance of language in a wider understanding of how language helps to shape and even create internal as well as the external world. Drawing on insights from psychoanalytic theory and practice as well as from linguistics and cultural theory this book will be invaluable for psychoanalysts psychoanalytic psychotherapists and bibliotherapists as well as anyone interested in how language forms our reality. | Psychoanalysis on the Verge of Language Clinical Cases on the Edge

The Collapse of China's Later Han Dynasty 25-220 CE The Northwest Borderlands and the Edge of Empire

The Collapse of China's Later Han Dynasty 25-220 CE The Northwest Borderlands and the Edge of Empire

In the Later Han period the region covering the modern provinces of Gansu southern Ningxia eastern Qinghai northern Sichuan and western Shaanxi was a porous frontier zone between the Chinese regimes and their Central Asian neighbours not fully incorporated into the Chinese realm until the first century BCE. Not surprisingly the region had a large concentration of men of martial background from which a regional culture characterized by warrior spirit and skills prevailed. This military elite was generally honoured by the imperial centre but during the Later Han period the ascendancy of eastern-based scholar-officials and the consequent increased emphasis on civil values and de-militarization fundamentally transformed the attitude of the imperial state towards the northwestern frontiersmen leaving them struggling to achieve high political and social status. From the ensuing tensions and resentment followed the capture of the imperial capital by a northwestern military force the deposing of the emperor and the installation of a new one which triggered the disintegration of the empire. Based on extensive original research and combining cultural military and political history this book examines fully the forging of military regional identity in the northwest borderlands and the consequences of this for the early Chinese empires. | The Collapse of China's Later Han Dynasty 25-220 CE The Northwest Borderlands and the Edge of Empire
