Ethnic Marketing Theory Practice and Entrepreneurship

Ethnic Marketing Theory Practice and Entrepreneurship

Together with the development of transformative technologies that epitomize globalization the ongoing movements of people across borders and other socio-economic pressures are creating a fast-changing business environment that is difficult for business to understand let alone control. Dominant social expectations that immigrants should seek to adopt an assimilationist socialization path towards the host country’s mainstream are contradicted by minority ethnic group resilience. There is no evidence that these groups naturally disappear within the cultural and behavioural contexts of their adopted countries. Since ethnic minority consumers cannot be expected to assimilate then they maintain some significant degree of unique ethnicity related consumer characteristics that convert into threats and opportunities for business. The inherent socialisation process also provides opportunities for ethnic entrepreneurship and for proliferation of ethnic minority business. Following from the extensive examination of scholarly perspectives of ethnic marketing theory there is an acknowledged and marked divide between theoretical exhortations and what is done in practice a relative oversight of the implications of mixed embedded markets and a propinquity to overlook the crucial role played by ethnic entrepreneurship and ethnic networks. Opportunity valuations are difficult to enact due to a lack of intelligence about ethnic markets. Variable sentiment about the future of ethnic marketing links to different predictions on how the drivers of globalization will impact on the acculturation paths of ethnic minorities. Keeping a focus on the ethnic group as the unit of analysis combining ethnic marketing and ethnic entrepreneurship theories provides intelligence about contemporary ethnic marketing and practice perspectives. The ultimate objective is to reduce the theory-practice divide through the development of a collaborative framework between business and scholars that converts into theory-in-use. | Ethnic Marketing Theory Practice and Entrepreneurship

Informal Public Transport in Practice Matatu Entrepreneurship

Informal Public Transport in Practice Matatu Entrepreneurship

Transport discourse often concentrates on what is missing from transport policy and practice in developing countries vis- -vis high-income countries rather than articulating local creativity in responding to transport needs as revealed in informal public transport modes such as matatu motorcycle bicycle and animal transport. This book helps to correct some of the tendency of inadequate contextualization of knowledge technology and practice learning and transfer from one setting to another in transport and other development programmes. While countries such as Kenya have ambitions to develop their transport systems to fit into the globalized transport system they also need to plan transport for ordinary life in both urban and rural areas. The matatu service provided by privately-owned transport carriers can be seen as a mirror of the life of Kenya revealing how indigenous African entrepreneurship and capitalism straddles various economic political and social systems. This book offers a phenomenological and situated analysis of the matatu entrepreneurship in the political economy of Kenya and its embeddedness in society. By adopting a social science approach this book highlights a number of political social and practical issues to demonstrate the matatu is not a decontextualized disembodied and lifeless piece of moving metal carrying people and goods but rather part of a self-organizing industry with its own logic of practice. This book is dedicated to Ajanga Khayesi. | Informal Public Transport in Practice Matatu Entrepreneurship

Archaeological Theory in Practice

Archaeological Theory in Practice

Many students view archaeological theory as a subject distinct from field research. This division is reinforced by the way theory is taught often in stand-alone courses that focus more on logic and reasoning than on the application of ideas to fieldwork. Divorcing thought from action does not convey how archaeologists go about understanding the past. This book bridges the gap between theory and practice by looking in detail at how the authors and their colleagues used theory to interpret what they found while conducting research in northwest Honduras. This is not a linear narrative. Rather the book highlights the open-ended nature of archaeological investigations in which theories guide research whose findings may challenge these initial interpretations and lead in unexpected directions. Pursuing those novel investigations requires new theories that are themselves subject to refutation by newly gathered data. The central case study is the writers’ work in Honduras. The interrelations of fieldwork data theory and interpretation are also illustrated with two long-running archaeological debates the emergence of inequality in southern Mesopotamia and inferring the ancient meanings of Stonehenge. The book is of special interest to undergraduate Anthropology/Archaeology majors and first- and second-year graduate students along with anyone interested in how archaeologists convert the static materials we find into dynamic histories of long-vanished people. | Archaeological Theory in Practice

Environmental Security in the Anthropocene Assessing Theory and Practice

This book provides a critical assessment of the theories and practice of environmental security in the context of the Anthropocene. The work analyses the intellectual foundations the evolution and different interpretations strengths and potential of the link between environment and security but also its weaknesses incoherencies and distortions. To do so it employs a critical environmental security studies analytical framework and uniquely places this analysis within the context of the Anthropocene. Furthermore the book examines the practice–theory divide and the political implementation of the environmental security concept in response to global environmental change and in relation to different actors. It pays significant attention to the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC) which is led by different programs of the United Nations the OSCE and until recently by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) among others and has largely been overlooked in the academic literature to date. The goal is to study how environmental security practice could inform and shape the environmental security theory and also to explore how conversely new theoretical insights could contribute to the enhancement of environmental security activities. This book will be of great interest to students and academic scholars of Environmental Security Critical Security Studies Green Political Theory Global Governance and International Relations in general. | Environmental Security in the Anthropocene Assessing Theory and Practice
