Reinventing Paulo Freire A Pedagogy of Love

Reinventing Paulo Freire A Pedagogy of Love

One of the most influential critical educators of the twentieth century Paulo Freire challenged those educational inequalities and conditions of injustice faced by oppressed populations. In this new edition of Reinventing Paulo Freire Antonia Darder re-examines his legacy through reflections on Freirean pedagogy and the narratives of teachers who reinvent his work. The fully revised first part provides important historical political and economic connections between major societal concerns and educational questions raised by Freire and their link to the contemporary moment including questions tied to neoliberalism coloniality and educational inequalities. At the heart of the book is a critical understanding of how Freire’s pedagogy of love can inform in theory and practice a humanizing approach to teaching and learning. Powerful teacher narratives offer examples of a living praxis committed to democratic classroom life and the emancipation of subaltern communities. The narratives clearly illustrate how Freire’s ideas can be put concretely into practice in schools and communities. These reflections on Freirean praxis are sure to spark conversation and inspiration in teacher education courses. Through a close theoretical engagement of Freire’s ideas and key insights garnered from lived experiences the book speaks to the ways Freire can still inspire contemporary educators to adopt the spirit of liberatory pedagogy By so doing Reinventing Paulo Freire is certain to advance his theories in new ways both to those familiar with his work and to those studying Freire for the first time. | Reinventing Paulo Freire A Pedagogy of Love

Education in Revolutionary Struggles Iván Illich Paulo Freire Ernesto Guevara and Latin American Thought

Education in Revolutionary Struggles Iván Illich Paulo Freire Ernesto Guevara and Latin American Thought

Education in Revolutionary Struggles introduces us to the fascinating world of Latin American educational thought in the third quarter of the 20th century. It discusses the contributions of three of the most distinguished intellectuals of the period – Iván Illich Paulo Freire and Ernesto Guevara – and more specifically their answers to the eternal challenge: What is – or should be – the role of education in the profound structural and/or revolutionary transformation of our societies? The first part of the book identifies the cultural economic and political context of the revolutionary years in Latin America. This historical framework is of particular interest because it is the setting for the intellectual and educational debates in which these three thinkers took part. The second part the heart of the book expounds in depth how Iván Illich Paulo Freire and Ernesto Guevara contributed to understanding of how education is linked to the transformation of society. The third and final part highlights the most fertile dimensions of the educational thought of Iván Illich Paulo Freire and Ernesto Guevara – deschooling liberation education and revolutionary education respectively – and analyses the points where their conceptions of education in revolutionary struggles converged complemented one another or diverged. | Education in Revolutionary Struggles Iván Illich Paulo Freire Ernesto Guevara and Latin American Thought

Social Policy In A Nondemocratic Regime The Case Of Public Housing In Brazil

Social Policy In A Nondemocratic Regime The Case Of Public Housing In Brazil

This book had its origins in my doctoral research at the London School of Economics. It developed more rapidly than expected thanks to the good will and collective efforts of various people and institutions who provided help and support-material intellectual and moralthroughout four years at the LSE and two years at Tel Aviv University. I am most grateful to George Philip and Patrick Dunleavy who have patiently read the many drafts and offered their comments and suggestions at various stages of this work. I would also like to thank Peter Dawson who during my early days at the LSE as a research and MSc student supervised advised and above all encouraged my intentions to carry out research on developing countries. Henrique Rattner of the Fundacao Getulio Vargas provided me not only with technical support but also introduced me to the complex Brazilian bureaucracy. Gabriel Bolaffi of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Sao Paulo made it possible for me to gain access to the otherwise restricted public housing agencies. I also extend my gratitude to the officials at COHAB/SP CODESPAULO INOCOOP and the BNH (in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo) who spared precious time to be interviewed and supplied me with published and unpublished documents. The IPT (Sao Paulo Institute of Technological Research) provided the primary material on ltaquera and enabled me to use their computing facilities and process the data. Special thanks are due to Ros Mari Kaupatez. The friends we made in Sao Paulo whose welcome and warmth surpassed all expectations made a long stay more bearable. This project could not have been carried out without the moral and financial support of both my grandfather and my parents who took a deep interest in my studies and encouraged me during difficult periods. A debt of thanks is also owed to the Publication Committee of the London School of Economics especially P. C. Davis. Anthony Hall's comments were very valuable. Thanks are due to the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Political Science at Tel Aviv University for financial help in preparing this work for publication. Finally this study is dedicated to my wife Sarah who interrupted her studies to accompany me to Brazil and helped me in ways I cannot adequately acknowledge. | Social Policy In A Nondemocratic Regime The Case Of Public Housing In Brazil

The Globalizing Cities Reader

The Globalizing Cities Reader

The newly revised Globalizing Cities Reader reflects how the geographies of theory have recently shifted away from the western vantage points from which much of the classic work in this field was developed. The expanded volume continues to make available many of the original and foundational works that underpin the research field while expanding coverage to familiarize students with new theoretical and epistemological positions as well as emerging research foci and horizons. It contains 38 new chapters including key writings on globalizing cities from leading thinkers such as John Friedmann Michael Peter Smith Saskia Sassen Peter Taylor Manuel Castells Anthony King Jennifer Robinson Ananya Roy and Fulong Wu. The new Reader reflects the fact that world and global city studies have evolved in exciting and wide-ranging ways and the very notion of a distinct global class of cities has recently been called into question. The sections examine the foundations of the field and processes of urban restructuring and global city formation. A large number of new entries focus on the emerging urban worlds of Asia Latin America and Africa including Beijing Bogota Cairo Cape Town Delhi Istanbul Medellin Mumbai Phnom Penh Rio de Janeiro Sao Paulo and Shanghai. The book also presents cases off the conventional map of global cities research such as smaller cities and less known urban regions that are undergoing processes of globalization. The book is a key resource for students and scholars alike who seek an accessible compendium of the intellectual foundations of global urban studies as well as an overview of the emergent patterns of early 21st century urbanization and associated sociopolitical contestation around the world. | The Globalizing Cities Reader
