Femininity and the Physically Active Woman

Femininity and the Physically Active Woman

The fitness boom of the last two decades has led to many people incorporating exercise into their lifestyles through activities such as jogging and aerobics. However whilst many physical and psychological health benefits have been documented far too few people actually take part in enough exercise to glean significant improvements and this is much more a problem for women than men. Femininity and the Physically Active Woman explores one reason many women offer for their lack of involvement in sport and exercise - that they are not the 'sporty' type. Precilla Y. L. Choi argues that the 'sporty' type is masculine and to determine how this notion might affect women's self-perceptions she critically examines the experiences of women athletes bodybuilders recreational exercisers and girls' physical education. What emerges is the importance of visible differences between women and men in terms of muscularity strength and agility in order to maintain the gender order. Thus if a girl or woman wishes to play the masculine game of sport she must do so in conformity with a number of patriarchal rules which ensure she is first and foremost recognised as a heterosexual feminine being. Contributing to a psychology of the physically active woman by examining women's experiences from critical feminist and gendered perspectives Femininity and the Physically Active Woman will be of great interest to students researchers practitioners and teachers from a range of disciplines. Precilla Y. L. Choi is the British Association for the Advancement of Science's Joseph Lister Lecturer for 2000. She has co-edited with Paula Nicolson Female Sexuality (Prentice Hall).

Jung's Technique of Active Imagination and Desoille's Directed Waking Dream Method Bridging the Divide

Jung's Technique of Active Imagination and Desoille's Directed Waking Dream Method Bridging the Divide

Jung's Technique of Active Imagination and Desoille's Directed Waking Dream Method brings together Carl Jung’s active imagination and Robert Desoille’s rêve éveillé dirigé/directed waking dream method (RED). It studies the historical development of these approaches in Central Europe in the first half of the 20th century and explores their theoretical similarities and differences proposing an integrated framework of clinical practice. The book aims to study the wider European context of the 1900s which influenced the development of both Jung’s and Desoille’s methods. This work compares the spatial metaphors of interiority used by both Jung and Desoille to describe the traditional concept of inner psychic space in the waking dreams of Jung’s active imagination and Desoille’s RED. It also attempts a broader theoretical comparison between the procedural aspects of both RED and active imagination by identifying commonalities and divergences between the two approaches. This book is a unique contribution to analytical psychology and will be of great interest for academics researchers and post-graduate students interested in the use of imagination and mental imagery in analysis psychotherapy and counselling. The book’s historical focus will be of particular relevance to Jungian and Desoillian scholars since it is the first of its kind to trace the connections between the two schools and it gives a detailed account of Desoille’s early life and his first written works. This book was a Gradiva Award nominee for 2021. | Jung's Technique of Active Imagination and Desoille's Directed Waking Dream Method Bridging the Divide

History of Psychology through Symbols From Reflective Study to Active Engagement. Volume 1: Historic Roots

History of Psychology through Symbols From Reflective Study to Active Engagement. Volume 1: Historic Roots

Volume One of The History of Psychology through Symbols provides a groundbreaking approach by expanding the roots of psychology beyond the Greeks to concurrent events during the same period (800 BCE–200 BCE) defined as the Axial Age by German-Swiss psychiatrist Karl Jaspers. The Axial Age emphasized seeking the universal connection that unites all humanity a focus not on what one believed but how one lived. This includes the human desire to connect to something greater the totality of being human explained by using symbols the universal language. This volume describes the psychological implications of the Axial Age through the developments of Buddhism Hinduism Confucianism Daoism Judaism and Zoroastrianism as well as Greek thought. Rooted in the Axial Age Volume One explores how the Christian and Islamic eras influenced psychology which resulted in the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution which provided the historic roots of modern psychology. Rejecting the idea that science transcends historical events this volume provides a political socioeconomic and cultural context for all the historic developments. The chapter on the history of mental illness provides inspiration for a new mental health system with specific recommendations for radical system reform. In the spirit of the Axial Age on the importance of how one lives there is an emphasis on engagement with symbols and with specific exercises called emancipatory opportunities to apply the lessons of psychological history to daily life. This book is ideal for those seeking a dynamic and engaging way of learning about or teaching the history of psychology and would also be of interest to students practitioners and scholars of science philosophy history and systems religious studies art and mental health and drug and alcohol treatment as well as those interested in applying the lessons of history to daily life. | History of Psychology through Symbols From Reflective Study to Active Engagement.
