A Semiotics of Multimodality and Signification in the Divine Comedy

A new critical method for the Divine Comedy which focuses not only on language-as-writing but also and equally on other discursive modes that the Divine Comedy authorizes. Multimodality was already present in Dante’s time and the reception of the Divine Comedy took place multimodally. Thus a theoretical study of multimodality carried out under the semiotic lens sheds light on how and why a mode is more effective than another and/or how they may combine in producing signification and new ontologies warranted by Dante’s text. Also we do not yet have a critical theory that allows us to understand the function of multimodality for the creation of new forms of signification and of clarifying the ontological boundaries set forth by different modalities. The Divine in Modern Hebrew Literature

Demonstrating the pervasive presence of God in modern Hebrew literature this book explores the qualities that twentieth-century Hebrew writers attributed to the divine and examines their functions against the simplistic dichotomy between religious and secular literature. The volume follows both chronological and thematic paths offering a panoramic and multilayered analysis of the various strategies in which modern Hebrew writers from the turn of the nineteenth century through the twenty-first century pursued in their attempt to represent the divine in the face of metaphysical theological and representational challenges. Modern Hebrew literature emerged during the nineteenth century as part of the Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) movement which attempted to break from the traditional modes of Jewish intellectual and social life. The historical shift from Vedic traditions to post-Vedic bhakti (devotional) traditions is accompanied by a shift from abstract translocal notions of divinity to particularized localized notions of divinity and a corresponding shift from aniconic to iconic traditions and from temporary sacrificial arenas to established temple sites. In Bhakti and Embodiment Barbara Holdrege argues that the various transformations that characterize this historical shift are a direct consequence of newly emerging discourses of the body in bhakti traditions in which constructions of divine embodiment proliferate celebrating the notion that a deity while remaining translocal can appear in manifold corporeal forms in different times and different localities on different planes of existence. Holdrege suggests that an exploration of the connections between bhakti and embodiment is critical not only to illuminating the distinctive transformations that characterize the emergence of bhakti traditions but also to understanding the myriad forms that bhakti has historically assumed up to the present time. Examining the evolution of kingship in the Ancient Near East from the time of the Sumerians to the rise of the Seleucids in Babylon this book argues that the Sumerian emphasis on the divine favour that the fertility goddess and the Sun god bestowed upon the king should be understood metaphorically from the start and that these metaphors survived in later historical periods through popular literature including the Epic of Gilgameš and the Enuma Eliš. The author’s research shows that from the earliest times Near Eastern kings and their scribes adapted these metaphors to promote royal legitimacy in accordance with legendary exempla that highlighted the role of the king as the establisher of order and civilization. It uncovers a tradition of writers for whom divine motherhood embodied ideals felt to be missing from the orthodox masculine deity. Elizabeth Gaskell Josephine Butler George Macdonald Frances Hodgson Burnett and Charlotte Perkins Gilman independently reworked their inherited faith to create a new symbol that better met their religious needs based on ideal Victorian notions of motherhood and ‘Mother Nature’. The Incarnation traditionally understood as the metaphysical union between true divinity and true humanity in the one person of Jesus Christ is one of the central doctrines for Christians over the centuries. Nevertheless many scholars have objected that the Scriptural account of the Incarnation is incoherent. Being divine seems to entail being omniscient omnipotent and omnipresent but the New Testament portrays Jesus as having human properties such as being apparently limited in knowledge power and presence. It seems logically impossible that any single individual could possess such mutually exclusive sets of properties and this leads to scepticism concerning the occurrence of the Incarnation in history.
