British Think-Tanks And The Climate Of Opinion

Think Tanks in the US and EU The Role of Policy Institutes in Washington and Brussels

Think Tanks in the US and EU The Role of Policy Institutes in Washington and Brussels

Why do US and EU think tanks diverge in their roles priorities and main constituencies? Providing the first substantive analytical comparison of think tanks in Washington and Brussels this book explores the differences that exist and why they developed. Two principal variables are identified – institutional credibility and political culture – as a measure of comparison between the two think tank models. Supranational think tanks have an inherent credibility with the institutions of the EU which allows them to direct their resources and efforts to activities and outputs where they hold a comparative advantage. US think tanks lack such institutional recognition and so need to prove their credibility to their main constituencies. The result is that an adversarial and individualistic political culture has informed the norms and activities of Washington think tanks while the consensus-driven and collectivist political culture of Europe has influenced supranational think tanks. Think tanks are far from newcomers to the public policy scene but our broader understanding of their role structure and how they assess their own achievements is not yet fully developed. By providing a framework within which to analyse this this book will be of interest to academics students and policy experts working within public policy comparative politics and political science more generally. | Think Tanks in the US and EU The Role of Policy Institutes in Washington and Brussels

Exercises in Architecture Learning to Think as an Architect

Exercises in Architecture Learning to Think as an Architect

This revised edition of Exercises in Architecture: Learning to Think as an Architect is full of new content building on the success of the previous edition. All the original exercises have been revised and new ones added with the format changing to allow the inclusion of more supplementary material. The aim remains the same to help pre- or early-course architecture students begin and develop their ability to think as architects. Learning to do architecture is tricky. It involves awakening abilities that remain dormant in most people. It is like learning language for the first time; a task made more mystifying by the fact that architecture deals not in words but in places: places to stand to walk to sit to hide to sleep to cook to eat to work to play to worship… This book was written for those who want to be architects. It suggests a basis for early experiences in a school of architecture; but it could also be used in secondary schools and colleges or as self-directed preparation for students in the months before entering professional education. Exercises in Architecture builds on and supplements the methodology for architectural analysis presented in the author’s previous book Analysing Architecture: the Universal Language of Place-Making (fifth edition 2021) and demonstrated in his Twenty-Five Buildings Every Architect Should Understand (Routledge 2015). Together the three books deal with the three aspects of learning any creative discipline: 1. Analysing Architecture provides a methodology for analysis that develops an understanding of the way architecture works; 2. Twenty-Five Buildings explores and extends that methodology through analysis of examples as case studies; and 3. Exercises in Architecture offers a way of expanding understanding and developing fluency by following a range of rudimentary and more sophisticated exercises. Those who wish to become professional architects (wherever in the world they might be) must make a conscious effort to learn the universal language of architecture as place-making to explore its powers and how they might be used. The exercises in this book are designed to help. | Exercises in Architecture Learning to Think as an Architect

The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison

The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison

For 40 years this classic text has taken the issue of economic inequality seriously and asked: Why are our prisons filled with the poor? Why aren’t the tools of the criminal justice system being used to protect Americans from predatory business practices and to punish well-off people who cause widespread harm? This new edition continues to engage readers in important exercises of critical thinking: Why has the U. S. relied so heavily on tough crime policies despite evidence of their limited effectiveness and how much of the decline in crime rates can be attributed to them? Why does the U. S. have such a high crime rate compared to other developed nations and what could we do about it? Are the morally blameworthy harms of the rich and poor equally translated into criminal laws that protect the public from harms on the streets and harms from the suites? How much class bias is present in the criminal justice system—both when the rich and poor engage in the same act and when the rich use their leadership of corporations to perpetrate mass victimization? The Rich Get Richer the Poor Get Prison shows readers that much of what goes on in the criminal justice system violates citizens’ sense of basic fairness. It presents extensive evidence from mainstream data that the criminal justice system does not function in the way it says it does nor in the way that readers believe it should. The authors develop a theoretical perspective from which readers might understand these failures and evaluate them morally—and they do it in a short text written in plain language. Readers who are not convinced about the larger theoretical perspective will still have engaged in extensive critical thinking to identify their own taken-for-granted assumptions about crime and criminal justice as well as uncover the effects of power on social practices. This engagement helps readers develop their own worldview. New to this edition: • Presents recent data comparing the harms due to criminal activity with the harms of dangerous—but not criminal—corporate actions • Updates research on class discrimination at every stage of the criminal justice system • Updates statistics on crime victimization incarceration and wealth • Increased material for thinking critically about criminal justice and criminology • New material on global warming and why Black Lives Matter protests did not cause increases in crime in 2020 • Expanded discussion of marijuana and drug legalization • Stronger chapter overviews clearer chapter structure and expanded review questions • Streamlined and condensed prose for greater clarity. | The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison

Who Rules America? The Corporate Rich White Nationalist Republicans and Inclusionary Democrats in the 2020s

Who Rules America? The Corporate Rich White Nationalist Republicans and Inclusionary Democrats in the 2020s

The 8th edition already significantly updated has now been further updated in 2023 to include the likely impact of the post-pandemic cutbacks the overturning of Roe v Wade and the Trump indictments on the 2024 national elections. These factors could lead to more economic growth and social support for families schools and health care-or an increase in inequality white male supremacy and social strife depending on the size of the voter turnout by younger voters. At this crucial moment in American history when voting rights could be expanded to include all citizens or legislatively limited this significantly updated edition of Who Rules America? shows precisely how the top 1% of the population who own 43% of all financial wealth and receive 20% of the nation’s yearly income dominate governmental decision-making. They have created a corporate community and a policy-planning network made up of foundations think-tanks and policy-discussion groups to develop the policies that become law. Through a leadership group called the power elite the corporate rich provide campaign donations and other gifts and favors to elected officials serve on federal advisory committees and receive appointments to key positions in government all of which make it possible for the corporate rich and the power elite to rule the country despite constant challenges from the inclusionary alliance and from the Democratic Party. The book explains the role of both benign and dark attempts to influence public opinion the machinations of the climate-denial network and how the Supreme Court came to have an ultraconservative majority who serve as a backstop for the corporate community as well as a legitimator of restrictions on voting rights union rights and abortion rights by ruling that individual states have the power to set such limits. Despite all this highly concentrated power it will be the other 99. 5% not the top 0. 5% who will decide the fate of the United States in the 2020s on all the important issues. | Who Rules America? Creating a Language-Rich Math Class Strategies and Activities for Building Conceptual Understanding

Creating a Language-Rich Math Class Strategies and Activities for Building Conceptual Understanding

What meanings do your students have for key mathematics concepts? What meanings do you wish them to have? Creating a Language-Rich Math Class offers practical approaches for developing conceptual understandings by connecting concrete pictorial verbal and symbolic representations. The focus is on making mathematics memorable instead of on memorizing. You’ll learn strategies for introducing students to math language that gives meaning to the terms and symbols they use every day; for building flexibility and precision in students’ use of math language; and for structuring activities to make them more language-rich. This second edition also provides strategies for helping students to at times be quiet and listen to their peers; for purposefully using language to introduce students to more complex mathematical symbolism and algebraic properties; and for using writing prompts to zoom in on the meanings that individual students have given to the language-rich experiences. Appropriate for elementary teachers and instructional coaches the book also includes features such as Investigations to Try and Questions for Reflection to help you incorporate these ideas into your practice. In addition there are Blackline masters of game cards and puzzles which can also be found on our website for free download at http://www. routledge. com/9780367759957. | Creating a Language-Rich Math Class Strategies and Activities for Building Conceptual Understanding
