Climate Justice and Collective Action

The Mathematics of Collective Action

The Mathematics of Collective Action

Philosophers social scientists and laymen have used two perspectives in analyzing social action. One sees man's action as the result of causal forces and the other sees action as purposive and goal directed. Mathematical treatment of social action has shown this same dichotomy. Some models of behavior describe a causal process in which there is no place for intention or purpose. Most stochastic models of behavior whether individual or group are like this. Another body of work however employs purpose anticipation of some future state and action designed to maximize the proximity to some goal. Classical microeconomic theory statistical decision theory and game theory exemplify this direction. This book examines these two directions of work and makes original contributions to the second. An introductory chapter outlines these two bodies of work and casts them in a common frame to display their similarities and differences. Chapter 2 reviews at length recent work in stochastic processes that makes up the first body of work which sees social action as the resultant of causal forces. The remaining chapters develop a mathematical framework for the study of systems of social action using a purposive theoretical base. These chapters are designed particularly to contribute to the study of collective decisions a form of social action that has proved particularly challenging to theoretical analysis. First published in 1973 this became a significant work both in problem solving and in the future career of the author. It is of continuing importance to researchers and students interested in statistical analysis. | The Mathematics of Collective Action

Using Action Inquiry in Engaged Research An Organizing Guide

Using Action Inquiry in Engaged Research An Organizing Guide

Using Action Inquiry in Engaged Research: An Organizing Guide offers higher education and school professionals practical guidance and methods for using the Action Inquiry Model (AIM) in engaged research initiatives and community partnerships. Replete with group exercises and case studies this guide was originally developed to supplement workshops for faculty administrators and students working on action initiatives that focused on critical educational issues facing local communities. It provides a useful framework and straightforward techniques for building empowering partnerships. The Action Inquiry Model (AIM) includes four stages: • Assessment: Using research and experience to identify critical challenges facing the university with respect to the improvement of educational opportunities• Organization: Developing workgroups to collaborate on initiatives that address critical challenges; providing financial support for new initiatives; and providing release time and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff who engage in reform initiatives• Action Initiatives: Treating reforms as pilot tests for new strategies as a means of promoting organizational learning professional development and student success• Evaluation: Integrating the evaluation of current programs and incorporating new initiatives into the reform process. This guide provides two methods for learning the inquiry process: a step-by-step process for defining tasks for teams of researchers and practitioners working together to use research to inform the educational improvement; and sets of case studies on assessment and action inquiry to inform groups in collectively discussing problems and strategies an approach that supports the classroom use of the Guide. The key tasks in action inquiry initiatives include: 1. Build an understanding of the challenge 2 Identify the causes of the challenge using data to test hypotheses2. Look internally and externally for solutions3. Assess possible solutions4. Develop action plans5. Implement pilot test and evaluateThis guide is appropriate for professional development programs and as a text for higher education Masters and Ph. D. programs. | Using Action Inquiry in Engaged Research An Organizing Guide

The Routledge Companion to Humanitarian Action

The Routledge Companion to Humanitarian Action

The Companion on Humanitarian Action addresses the political ethical legal and practical issues which influence reactions to humanitarian crisis. It does so by exploring the daily dilemmas faced by a range of actors including policy makers aid workers the private sector and the beneficiaries of aid and by challenging common perceptions regarding humanitarian crisis and the policies put in place to address these. Through such explorations it provides practitioners and scholars with the knowledge needed to both understand and improve upon current forms of humanitarian action. The Companion will be of use to those interested a range of humanitarian programmes ranging from emergency medical assistance military interventions managing refugee flows and the implementation of international humanitarian law. As opposed to addressing specific programmes it will explore five themes seen as relevant to understanding and engaging in all modes of humanitarian action. The first section explores varying interpretations of humanitarianism including critical historical and political-economic explanations as well as more practice based explorations focused on notions needs assessments and evaluation. Following this readers will be exposed to the latest debates on a range of humanitarian principles including neutrality and sovereignty before exploring the key issues faced by the main actors involved in humanitarian crisis (from international NGOs to local community based organizations). The final two sections address what are seen as key dilemmas in regards to humanitarian action and emerging trends in the humanitarian system including the increasing role of social media in responding to crises. Whilst not a ‘how to guide’ the Companion contains many practical insights for policy makers and aid workers whilst also offering analytical insights for students of hu | The Routledge Companion to Humanitarian Action

Sustainable Action Overcoming the Barriers

Sustainable Action Overcoming the Barriers

In this timely exploration of sustainable actions Christian Berg unpacks the complexity in understanding the barriers we face in moving towards a sustainable future providing solution perspectives for every level from individuals to governments and supra-national organizations offering a lucid vision of a long-term and achievable goal for sustainability. While the 2030 Agenda has already set ambitious targets for humanity it offers little guidance for concrete actions. Although much is already being done progress seems slow and some actions aiming at sustainability may be counterproductive. Different disciplines societal actors governmental departments and NGOs attribute the slow progress to a number of different causes from the corruption of politicians to the wrong incentive structures. Sustainable Action surveys all the fields involved in sustainability to provide action principles which speak to actors of different kinds not just those professionally mandated with such changes. It offers a road map to all those who might not constantly think about systems change but who are concerned and want to contribute to a sustainable future in a meaningful way. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of sustainability issues as well as those looking for a framework for how to change their systems at work to impact the quadruple bottom line: environment economy society and future generations. | Sustainable Action Overcoming the Barriers

Climate Change Action and the Responsibility to Protect A Common Cause

Climate Change Action and the Responsibility to Protect A Common Cause

This book brings together two important fields in the study of international politics and policy: climate change adaptation and mitigation (climate action) and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). Both have attracted strong scholarly attention in each of their respective research silos but there is yet to be a strong research push that explores the relationship between the two. Filling this gap Ben L. Parr argues that the climate action and the R2P agendas share a common goal: to protect vulnerable human populations from large-scale harm. To substantiate this argument Parr reveals where the historical conceptual and operational parallels exist between the two agendas and where and when researchers and practitioners from both camps might work together in practice to achieve their common goal in the challenging years ahead. Notably the book builds on recent efforts by Western governments in the UK US and EU to integrate climate action policies into conflict prevention and response policies. To achieve this the volume situates a variety of climate action policies alongside the 46 policy options found in the R2P operational framework (commonly known as the R2P toolbox) across its prevention reaction and rebuilding phases. Climate Change Action and the Responsibility to Protect will be of significant interest to policy-orientated students and scholars those working at the academic-policy interface in the NGO community as well as those working in government and international organisations. | Climate Change Action and the Responsibility to Protect A Common Cause

Dirty Tricks or Trump Cards U.S. Covert Action and Counterintelligence

Dirty Tricks or Trump Cards U.S. Covert Action and Counterintelligence

Contrary to popular misconceptions and public branding as dirty tricks covert action and counterintelligence can have considerable value. Democracies while wary of these instruments have benefited significantly from their use saving lives treasure and gaining strategic advantage. As liberal democracies confront the post-Cold War mix of rogue states and non-state actors such as criminals and terrorists and weapons of mass destruction and mass disruption these clandestine arts may prove to be important tools of statecraft and perhaps trump cards in the twenty-first century. Godson defines covert action as influencing events in other parts of the world without attribution and counterintelligence as identifying neutralizing and exploiting the secret activities of others. Together they provide the capability to resist manipulation and control others to advantage. Counterintelligence protects U. S. military technological and diplomatic secrets and turns adversary intelligence to U. S. advantage. Covert action enables the United States to weaken adversaries and to assist allies who may be hampered by open acknowledgment of foreign support. Drawing on contemporary and historical literature broad-ranging contacts with senior intelligence officials in many countries as well as his own research and experience as a longtime consultant to the U. S. government Godson traces the history of U. S. covert action and counterintelligence since 1945 showing that covert action works well when it is part of a well-coordinated policy and when policy makers are committed to succeeding in the long-term. Godson argues that the best counterintelligence is an offensive defense. His exposition of the essential theoretical foundations of both covert action and counterintelligence supported by historical examples lays out the ideal conditions for their use as well as demonstrating why they are so difficult to attain. This book will be of interest to students and general readers interested in political science national security foreign policy and military policy. | Dirty Tricks or Trump Cards U. S.
