Tagore Einstein and the Nature of Reality Literary and Philosophical Reflections

Tagore Einstein and the Nature of Reality Literary and Philosophical Reflections

This volume consists of a selection of scholarly essays from literature philosophy and history on the conception of reality as understood by Rabindranath Tagore and Albert Einstein. The nature of reality has been a long-debated issue among scientists and philosophers. Tagore (1861–1941) met Einstein (1879–1955) at the latter’s house in Kaputh Germany on 14 July 1930 and had a long conversation on this issue. This conversation has been widely quoted and discussed by scientists philosophers and scholars from the literary world. The important question that Tagore and Einstein discussed was whether the world is a unity dependent on humanity or the world is a reality independent of the human factor. Einstein believed that reality is independent of the mind and the human factor. On the other hand Tagore adopted the opposite view. Nevertheless both Einstein and Tagore claimed to be realists — their conceptions of reality were obviously fundamentally different. Where does the difference lie? Can it be harmonized at a deeper level? This volume brings together for the first time a gamut of views on this subject from eminent scholars. It presents some key reflections on reality language poetry truth science personality human sciences virtue ethics intelligibility and creativity. It will be useful to scholars and researchers of philosophy literature history and political studies as also to those interested in Tagore. | Tagore Einstein and the Nature of Reality Literary and Philosophical Reflections

Population and the Political Imagination Census Register and Citizenship in India

Population and the Political Imagination Census Register and Citizenship in India

This book identifies population as a central issue of polity and examines its links to ideas of state and citizenship. It explores the relationship between the state citizenship and polity by reexamining processes related to census enumeration population and citizen registers and the politics of classificatory governmentality. Religion ethnicity caste and political class play a key role in determining community identities and the relationship between an individual and the state. Contextualizing the arguments and controversies around the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 (CAA 2019) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) the book examines the processes of inclusion or exclusion of minorities and migrants as citizens in India. It focusses on the classification of irregular and refugee migration since independence in India especially in the state of Assam. The book highlights how political imagination as a theoretical framework shapes the processes and strategies for enumeration and classification and thereby the idea of citizenship. Underlining the relationship between instruments of government political mobilization and the resurgence of communal polarization it also offers suggestions for alternative constructions of citizenship and an inclusive state. This book will be useful for students and researchers of population studies population geography migration studies sociology political science social anthropology law and journalism. It will also be of interest to policy makers journalists as well as NGOs and CSOs. | Population and the Political Imagination Census Register and Citizenship in India

Ocean as Method Thinking with the Maritime

Ocean as Method Thinking with the Maritime

Ocean as Method presents a new way of thinking about the humanities and the social sciences. It explores maritime connections in social and humanistic research and puts forward an alternative to national histories and area studies. As global warming and rising sea levels ring alarm bells across the world the chapters in the volume argue that it is time to think through oceans to realign discourses which better understand our future. The volume: • Engages with the paradigms of oceanic narratives to identify connections between continents through trade migration and economic processes thinking beyond the artificial distinctions between the Pacific Atlantic and Indian Oceans; • Discusses oceanic travel accounts by Muslim travellers to counter the idea that the colonial era was marked by European travel to Asia and Africa without a counterflow of “native travel”; •Examines the connections between South Africa South Asia and South East Asia through histories of Indian indenture and the slave trade and engages with the idea of the ocean and enforced movement; •Compares and connects recent scholarship in the social sciences and the humanities centring the ocean to break away from inherited paradigms which have shaped world history so far. As a unique transdisciplinary collaboration this volume will be of much interest to scholars and researchers of history especially oceanic history historiography critical theory literature geography and Global South studies. | Ocean as Method Thinking with the Maritime

Contextualizing Sectarianism in the Middle East and South Asia Identity Competition and Conflict

Contextualizing Sectarianism in the Middle East and South Asia Identity Competition and Conflict

States across the Muslim world are faced with challenges associated with a perpetual cycle of conflict and violence organized along sectarian lines. To understand modern-day sectarianism it is essential to move beyond explanations that focus predominantly on ancient Sunni-Shia animosities or a singular lens. It is important to engage in interdisciplinary and multidirectional examinations to better understand how sectarianism is strategically utilized by political entrepreneurs. Moreover while religious identities and how individuals define themselves and their communities are important it is also integral to analyze how identity has been utilized in historical and contemporary political contexts on state and non-state levels. This volume seeks to fill gaps in understanding the complexities associated with sectarianism through a transnational interdisciplinary analytical framework to enhance understanding of the socio-political religio-political cultural and security landscapes of the Middle East and South Asia. It also challenges narratives regarding sectarian divisions between Sunnis and Shias and deconstructs popular misconceptions about sectarianism its spatial and temporal impact as well as its influence on identities conflict and competition. The volume will be of interest to scholars and researchers of the Middle East and South Asia and those interested in history politics international relations international security religion and sociology. | Contextualizing Sectarianism in the Middle East and South Asia Identity Competition and Conflict
