Monterey Cypress / Goldcrest Cypress (Cupressus Macrocarpa Goldcrest)

Monterey Cypress / Goldcrest Cypress (Cupressus Macrocarpa Goldcrest)

A traditional conifer with bright golden-yellow foliage which grows upwards to a point. Originating from Monterey California on the west coast of America, this cypress tree has a natural resistance to salt water – making it a popular choice in seaside locations around Britain. Fast-growing, it is a versatile plant that can be used for hedging, windbreaks, or even trained into a topiary shape. The leaves of the Goldcrest Cypress hold their colour all-year-round and emit a lovely lemon scent when trimmed or cut. All conifers are known for their hardiness and resilience against the elements. We often think of them being heavily covered with snow during the winter, but they can look equally as bold and impressive against a bright blue summer sky. Conifers get their name from the "cones" that they produce – which come in all shapes and sizes. Conifer leaves are evergreen and will either be needle-shaped or scale-like. Liriope Muscari (Big Blue Lilyturf)

Liriope Muscari (Big Blue Lilyturf)

An evergreen grass, whose blueish-green leaves provide a sophisticated backdrop to its purple flowers. Originally from Asia, the Big Blue Lilyturf has become popular around the world for its leaves that hold their colour all-year-round and for its sumptuous purple flowers, which appear in autumn. These purple petals are sometimes followed by clusters of black berries. Big Blue Lilyturf is resilient against heat and humidity, but less hardy against the cold than other ornamental grasses we sell. Ornamental Grasses are chosen for their decorative qualities and whether used indoors or outdoors, they can bring a striking diversity to your garden. From round shrubs to tall walls of quivering spikes, ornamental grasses bring new shapes and textures that will contrast against the twisted roots of trees and the blooms of traditional plants and flowers. They are also becoming increasingly popular due to their hardiness against the British weather and their ability to hold their colour through autumn and winter. Arundo Donax (Spanish Cane)

Arundo Donax (Spanish Cane)

A tropical grass from the Mediterranean that grows like bamboo to heights as tall as 500cm. The shape of Spanish Cane is similar to corn – thick green stems with long floppy leaves arranged in a ladder formation. In the autumn, you might be lucky enough to see spikey pink flowers appear. Roots can become large and woody, so we recommend dividing clumps-of-growth and replanting them elsewhere in the spring. Spanish Cane is a rewarding, but high maintenance plant. Liriope Muscari Variegata (Variegated Lilyturf)

Liriope Muscari Variegata (Variegated Lilyturf)

Similar to the Big Blue Lilyturf, but with leaves that are bright green and feature cream-coloured stripes. The Variegated Lilyturf has a more fun and informal appearance than its ‘sensible’ and ‘sophisticated’ cousin. The cream-coloured streaks which run the length of its leaves come in a variety of thicknesses, which gives each one of its leaves a unique appearance. The flowers of Variegated Lilyturf are purple in colour and may remind you of a Hyacinth’s bloom. Cordyline Australis Atropurpurea (Purple Cabbage Tree)

Cordyline Australis Atropurpurea (Purple Cabbage Tree)

The Cordyline Australis is a plant that is native to New Zealand and has been used in native Maori medicine for many centuries now. It started to find its home in Europe around the 19th century. The plant itself produces beautiful purple foiliage and starts to grow lovely cream coloured flowers in the summer time. Cordyline Australis Atropurpurea is not fully hardy with it being on the hardiness scale at H3 but more mature specimens usually survive winter outdoors in milder regions or urban areas where temperatures don’t drop below -5 °C. Arundo Donax Variegata (Variegated Giant Reed)

Arundo Donax Variegata (Variegated Giant Reed)

The colourful cousin of the Spanish Cane – its long green leaves are decorated with multiple white bands. This contrast between bright white stripes in a range of thicknesses, and the dark green pigment of its leaves, gives the Variegated Giant Reed an exciting (even explosive) appearance. Its maximum height is only half that of Spanish Cane and its growth habit is not so ladder-like. It does have the same feathery pink flowers in autumn (if you’re lucky). Monterey Cypress / Goldcrest Cypress (Cupressus Macrocarpa Goldcrest) - Multi Buy

Monterey Cypress / Goldcrest Cypress (Cupressus Macrocarpa Goldcrest) - Multi Buy

Bisset Bamboo (Bambusa Phyllostachys Bissetii)

Bisset Bamboo (Bambusa Phyllostachys Bissetii)

The canes of this tall bamboo have a beautiful shine and are a mix of greens, yellows and oranges. Bisset Bamboo is a quick upwards-grower and it creates dense masses of leaves as it goes. These qualities make it a popular choice for creating walls of bamboo, either as a privacy screen, or as weather protection for other, more fragile plants nearby. As the canes reach heights above 3m, they start to arch sideways and will sway more easily in the breeze – which can have a very calming effect on your garden. Bamboo is one of the world’s fastest growing plant-types. Traditionally from Asia, its hardiness means it can actually be grown very easily in Britain – visitors to your garden will be surprised and impressed to see it there. As a forest plant, it appreciates a steady supply of moisture and compost. And as an enthusiastic grower, you should give Bamboo room to expand, we suggest placing infant plants about 100cm apart. Latin Name: Bambusa Phyllostachys Bissetii English Name: Bisset Bamboo, Bisset’s Bamboo, David Bisset Bamboo Species: Poaceae Genus: Phyllostachys Foliage Type: Evergreen. Foliage: Green. Juniper 'Bar Harbor' / Creeping Juniper (Juniperus Horizontalis)

Juniper 'Bar Harbor' / Creeping Juniper (Juniperus Horizontalis)

A great plant for preventing soil erosion and covering sloped surfaces in vivid green. The Bar Harbor Juniper is similar to the Creeping Blue Chip, but has leaves of a brighter green. Junipers in general are very useful in the garden for their solid colours and for their ability to grow in highly difficult conditions. As its name suggests, the Horizontalis Bar Harbor grows outwards and is an excellent choice as a ground cover. The Bar Harbor Juniper is faster growing than its cousin the Creeping Blue Chip and can reach a greater size at maturity (both sideways and vertically). All conifers are known for their hardiness and resilience against the elements. Conifers get their name from the "cones" that they produce – which come in all shapes and sizes. Conifer leaves are evergreen and will either be needle-shaped or scale-like. Because the Bar Harbor Juniper grows outwards rather than upwards, we have listed the horizontal size of the plants that we sell right here: 3 Litre Pot: Covers a circular area of roughly 20cm in diameter. 10 Litre Pot: Covers a circular area of roughly 40cm in diameter.
