A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom Volume 2 From Creation to the Victory of Scientific and Literary Methods

A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom Volume 2 From Creation to the Victory of Scientific and Literary Methods

Given the powerful and forthright title of Andrew Dickson White's classic study it is best to make clear his own sense of the whole as given in the original 1896 edition: My conviction is that science though it has evidently conquered dogmatic theology based on biblical texts and ancient modes of thought will go hand in hand with religion and that although theological control will continue to diminish religion as seen in the recognition of a 'power in the universe not ourselves which makes for righteousness' and in the love of God and of our neighbor will steadily grow stronger and stronger not only in the American institutions of learning but in the world at large. White began to assemble his magnum opus a two volume work first published in 1896 as A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom. In correspondence he wrote that he intended the work to stake out a position between such religious orthodoxy as John Henry Newman's on one side and such secular scoffing as Robert Ingersoll's on the other. Historian Paul Carter declared that this book did as much as any other published work toward routing orthodoxy in the name of science. Insofar as science and religion came to be widely viewed as enemies with science holding the moral high ground White inadvertently became one of the most effective and influential advocates for unbelief. | A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom Volume 2 From Creation to the Victory of Scientific and Literary Methods

The Political Economy of Immigration in The Netherlands Population Land and Welfare

The Political Economy of Immigration in The Netherlands Population Land and Welfare

Economists measure the effects of immigration through the yardstick of income. This book offers a broad survey of the conventional approach but in addition also considers better measures of welfare or well-being and provides a detailed description and evaluation of policies - rules regulations and implementation. The book offers a long historical perspective on the development of population density in the Netherlands. It begins with the history of the Netherlands: geological and cultural formation of the land - and water - and population development. The Netherlands is unique in that much of the land is man-made in particular the western part which is economically speaking the most developed area. It is also special for its very high population growth rate that took off during the 19th century. The key argument of the book is that population size is irrelevant for income per capita that land is a binding constraint in the Netherlands and that negative external effects of increasing population size lead to welfare losses from further population growth whether by natural growth or by immigration. At present the battle for scarce land is intense and bitter with a strong clash between developers who want to build houses farmers who do not want to give up farming and conservationists who increasingly find support in the courts for insufficiently caring for the natural environment. The book combines a general analysis of population density both theoretical and empirical with an in-depth presentation of actual policies in a country with intense pressure on available land. | The Political Economy of Immigration in The Netherlands Population Land and Welfare

Inhabiting Liminal Spaces Informalities in Governance Housing and Economic Activity in Contemporary Italy

This book draws together debates from two burgeoning fields liminality and informality studies to analyze how dynamics of rule-bending take shape in Rome today. Adopting a multiscalar and transdisciplinary approach it unpacks how gaps and contradictions in institutional rulemaking and application force many residents into protracted liminal states marked by intense vulnerability. By merging a political economy lens with ethnographic research in informal housing illegal moneylending unauthorized street-vending and waste collection the author shows that informalities are not marginal or anomalous conditions but an integral element of the city’s governance logics. Multiple actors together construct the local cultural norms conventions and moral economies through which rule-negotiation occurs. However these practices are ultimately unable to reconfigure historically rooted power dynamics and hierarchies. In fact they often aggravate weak urbanites’ difficulties in accessing rights and services. A study that challenges assumptions that informalities are predominantly features of developing economies or limited to specific groups and sectors this volume’s critical approach and innovative methodology will appeal to scholars of sociology and anthropology interested in social theory urban studies and liminality. | Inhabiting Liminal Spaces Informalities in Governance Housing and Economic Activity in Contemporary Italy

Military Rules Regulations and the Code of War Francis Lieber and the Certification of Conflict

Military Rules Regulations and the Code of War Francis Lieber and the Certification of Conflict

Military commanders from ancient time had set down rules and regulations to discipline their troops. From the Pharaohs on commanders directed the strategy tactics and camp discipline of the often unruly hosts of soldiers under their command. They had one aim: to create an efficient fighting force. Military officers camp-followers and cooks were all expected to perform their services according to mandate and in light of the best interests of the armed force and the fighting soldiery. Modern commanders have exemplified the same passion for military discipline to produce an effective combat machine. Military analyses derived from Roman law contained enough historical examples to fill an encyclopedia. Yet although addressed to the problems of their day they generally remained the private counsel of scholars and had little impact on political and military decisions. While theorists of international law were developing a body of rules to govern warfare practitioners of conflict were largely moved by the motives of military necessity. Under the dual auspices of military necessity and national self-interest the code of the military commander was simple: maintain a disciplined fighting force in order to achieve military victory. To remedy this gap between theory and practice a practical guide was needed which would briefly describe for commanders in the field the rights and obligations of belligerents as custom and theory had developed them. Then political and military policy could be expected to conform to the theoretical law of nations. This was the synthesis that the Lieber code proposed. Originally published in as Lieber's Law and the Code of War this paperback edition bears a new title that more precisely identifies the subjects covered. | Military Rules Regulations and the Code of War Francis Lieber and the Certification of Conflict

The Origins of Violence Approaches to the Study of Conflict

The Origins of Violence Approaches to the Study of Conflict

In this fundamental analysis Rapoport asks: Why do we have wars? Doesn't humanity always seem on the verge of self-annihilation? Is there something in human genetic structure that makes people want to kill each other? Perhaps this impulse is a matter of good versus evil or just plain human nature. Rapoport moves beyond cliches by claiming that the sources of modern violence reside in the imbalance between a lag in the system of values inherited from the past and the structure of science and technology that awaits no revision of values to move ahead. As a result Rapoport argues that the study of war and peace should be considered a science just like biology or for that matter political science. The same rules of empirical engagement and experimentation should apply. Before we can have a theory of peace we need a methodology of conflict. Using the writings of thinkers who have made significant contributions to the predominant ideas and ideals of our society Rapoport weaves together the strands of independent thought and research into a single thought-provoking work. After investigating the whys of violence using ideological psychological strategic and systemic perspective Rapoport moves to an in-depth analysis of possible varieties of conflict resolution. He explores such mechanisms as mediation education and applying the results of scientific research. He documents the impact of ideologies countervailing dominant ones that place obstacles in the way of peacemaking. Rapoport argues that conciliation and game theories can be utilized to replace the concept of winner take all or total victory. The Origins of Violence is a needed contribution to our understanding of warfare and provides a forward-looking perspective that can be of wide use to each of the policy sciences starting with military strategy and ending with international development. | The Origins of Violence Approaches to the Study of Conflict

Complexity Economics Economic Governance Science and Policy

Complexity Economics Economic Governance Science and Policy

Our socio–economic innovation ecosystem is riddled with ever-increasing complexity as we are faced with more frequent and intense shocks such as COVID-19. Unfortunately addressing complexity requires a different kind of economic governance. There is increasing pressure on economics to not only going beyond its traditional mainstream boundaries but also to tackle real-world problems such as fostering structural change enhancing sustained growth promoting inclusive development in the era of the digital economy and boosting green growth while addressing the divide between the financial sector and the real economy. This book demonstrates how to apply complexity science to economics in an effective and instructive way in the interest of life-enhancing policies. The book revolves around the non-negligible problem of why economics to date seems to be inadequate in guiding economic governance to navigate through real and ever-intensifying complex socio–economic and environmental challenges. With its interdisciplinary approach the book scans the nuanced nexus between complexity and economics by incorporating as well as transcending the state-of-the-art literature. It identifies ways to trigger opportunities for behavioural change in the economic profession with respect to how and what to teach introducing and developing further complexity economics taking into account the configuration of its main principles and outlining the silhouette of next-generation economic governance. The book deciphers recommendations for economic theory practice education and economic governance. It will be of interest to students scholars academics think-tank researchers and economic policy practitioners at the national and/or supranational levels. | Complexity Economics Economic Governance Science and Policy

Laser-Matter Interaction for Radiation and Energy

Laser-Matter Interaction for Radiation and Energy

The interaction of high-power lasers with matter can generate Terahertz radiations that efficiently contribute to THz Time-Domain Spectroscopy and also would replace X-rays in medical and security applications. When a short intense laser pulse ionizes a gas it may produce new frequencies even in VUV to XUV domain. The duration of XUV pulses can be confined down to the isolated attosecond pulse levels required to study the electronic re-arrangement and ultrafast processes. Another important aspect of laser-matter interaction is the laser thermonuclear fusion control where accelerated particles also find an efficient use. This book provides comprehensive coverage of the most essential topics including Electromagnetic waves and lasers THz radiation using semiconducting materials / nanostructures / gases / plasmas Surface plasmon resonance THz radiation detection Particle acceleration technologies X-ray lasers High harmonics and attosecond lasers Laser based techniques of thermonuclear fusion Controlled fusion devices including NIF and ITER The book comprises of 11 chapters and every chapter starts with a lucid introduction to the main topic. Then sub-topics are sedulously discussed keeping in mind their basics methodology state-of-the-art and future perspective that will prove to be salutary for readers. High quality solved examples are appended to the chapters for their deep understanding and relevant applications. In view of the nature of the topics and their level of discussion this book is expected to have pre-eminent potential for researchers along with postgraduate and undergraduate students all over the world. | Laser-Matter Interaction for Radiation and Energy

Reflections on the Revolution in Europe

Reflections on the Revolution in Europe

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 effectively ended the division of Europe into East and West and the features of our world that have resulted bear little resemblance to those of the forty years that preceded the Wall's fall. The rise of a new Europe prompts many questions most of which remain to be answered. What does it all mean? Where is it going to lead? Are we witnessing the conclusion of an era without seeing anything to replace an old and admittedly dismal way of life? What will a market economy do to the social texture of various countries of Central Europe? Will it not make some rich while many will become poorer than ever? How can the rule of law be brought about? In this incisive and lucid book Ralf Dahrendorf one of Europe's most distinguished scholars ponders these and other equally vexing questions. He regards what has happened in East Central Europe as a victory for neither of the social systems that once opposed each other across the Iron Curtain. Rather he views these events as a vote for an open society over a closed society. The continuing conundrum he argues which will plague peoples everywhere will be how to balance the need for economic growth with the desire for social justice while building authentic and enduring democratic institutions. Reflections on the Revolution in Europe which includes a new introduction from the author is a humane skeptical and anti-utopian work a manifesto for a radical liberalism in which the social entitlements of citizenship are as important a condition of progress as the opportunities for choice. A fascinating study of change and geopolitics in the modern world Reflections points the way towards a new politics for the twenty-first century. Ralf Dahrendorf born in Hamburg Germany in 1929 is a member of Britain's House of Lords. He was professor of sociology at Hamburg Tobingen and Konstanz from 1957 to 1968 and in 1974 moved to Britain. He has been the director of the London School of Economics warden of St. Antony's College and pro vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford. He is the author of numerous books including The Modern Social Conflict and After 1989: Morals Revolution and Civil Society.
