Liquid Architecture Experimental Practices of Design in a State of Flux

Liquid Architecture Experimental Practices of Design in a State of Flux

Liquid Architecture challenges the idea of architecture as a fixed inert container and reconceptualises it as a body whose boundaries are rather blurred and ever-changing. This book moves away from form as the primary driver of spatial protocols and explores what the built environment might look like when viewed through the lenses of a ‘wet ontology’ that is attentive to fluidity flows and territorial dynamism. A reconfiguration of architectural materials and authorship is thus considered leading in turn to an exploration of the ethical dimensions of co-designing with natural systems (of various viscosities) through liquid paradigms. The book examines a set of principles for practice-led discoveries that incorporate hybrid mixed media with the author’s intersubjective relationship with liquid matter. Drawing from qualitative-based analytical investigation models the text allows comprehension of the liquid phenomena via material contextualisation of an ever-becoming research setting. Through a practical and theoretical engagement with the ontology of liquids the reader is exposed to a range of design-led experiments and creative propositions visualisation systems construction and testing of physical models that collectively translate into a series of novel insights for architectural agendas. This book will be of interest to architecture and design research students and academics because it advocates the need for a more symbiotic and resilient approach to natural systems which could benefit from the integration of regenerating material flows into our buildings and urban settlements. | Liquid Architecture Experimental Practices of Design in a State of Flux

Plasma Discharge in Liquid Water Treatment and Applications

Plasma Discharge in Liquid Water Treatment and Applications

Plasma methods that effectively combine ultraviolet radiation active chemicals and high electric fields offer an alternative to conventional water treatment methods. However knowledge of the electric breakdown of liquids has not kept pace with this increasing interest mostly due to the complexity of phenomena related to the plasma breakdown process. Plasma Discharge in Liquid: Water Treatment and Applications provides engineers and scientists with a fundamental understanding of the physical and chemical phenomena associated with plasma discharges in liquids particularly in water. It also examines state-of-the-art plasma-assisted water treatment technologies. The Physics & Applications of Underwater Plasma Discharges The first part of the book describes the physical mechanism of pulsed electric breakdown in water and other liquids. It looks at how plasma is generated in liquids and discusses the electronic and bubble mechanism theories for how the electric discharge in liquid is initiated. The second part of the book focuses on various water treatment applications including: Decontamination of volatile organic compounds and remediation of contaminated water Microorganism sterilization and other biological applications Cooling water treatment Drawing extensively on recent research this one-stop reference combines the physics and applications of electric breakdown in liquids in a single volume. It offers a valuable resource for scientists engineers and students interested in the topic of plasmas in liquids. | Plasma Discharge in Liquid Water Treatment and Applications

Chinese Social Networks in an Age of Digitalization Liquid Guanxi

Chinese Social Networks in an Age of Digitalization Liquid Guanxi

Chinese Social Networks in an Age of Digitalization investigates the impact of digital media on the traditional Chinese model of social interaction trust-building and social capital known as guanxi. Guanxi is a system of cultural and psychological rules of networking that orders every interaction in China from the labor market to politics to business and even law. It is the lifeblood of the nation and nearly just as old. But how has guanxi kept pace with the modern rapids of digitalization? This book is the first to examine how the rise of social networking sites is transforming guanxi in everyday networking in China home to the largest population of users worldwide and nearly universal adoption in the nation. This monograph argues that digitalization is making guanxi liquid: that social and geographical boundaries are being melted away – and with it people are experiencing a newfound liberation in how they network trust and feel toward others. Au asserts that Chinese modernity itself is transforming into what it calls a digital agora a new intermediary space between the public and private spheres that balances obligations to both realms. The book offers researchers and students a window into how digitalization is changing how people in guanxi fundamentally think about who to trust how to interact and compose themselves and what it takes to socially survive in a rapidly advancing age of digitalization. | Chinese Social Networks in an Age of Digitalization Liquid Guanxi

Surface Chemistry Essentials

Surface Chemistry Essentials

Surface chemistry plays an important role in everyday life as the basis for many phenomena as well as technological applications. Common examples range from soap bubbles foam and raindrops to cosmetics paint adhesives and pharmaceuticals. Additional areas that rely on surface chemistry include modern nanotechnology medical diagnostics and drug delivery. There is extensive literature on this subject but most chemistry books only devote one or two chapters to it. Surface Chemistry Essentials fills a need for a reference that brings together the fundamental aspects of surface chemistry with up-to-date references and data from real-world examples. This book enables readers to better understand many natural phenomena and industrial processes. Mathematical treatment is mainly given as references to make the material accessible to individuals with a broader range of scientific backgrounds. The book begins by introducing basic considerations with respect to liquid and solid surfaces and describes forces in curved versus flat liquid surfaces. Chapters cover properties of surface active substances such as surfactants and soaps; lipid films and Langmuir-Blodgett films; and adsorption and desorption on solid surfaces. The author discusses processes involved in liquidsolid interface phenomena which are utilized in washing coatings lubrication and more and colloid chemistry systems and related industrial applications such as wastewater treatment. The author also addresses bubbles films and foams and the principles of oil water emulsion science used in detergents paints and skin creams. The final chapter considers more complex applications for example food emulsions scanning probe miscroscopy the cement industry and gas and oil recovery.

Plasma Applications for Material Modification From Microelectronics to Biological Materials

Plasma Applications for Material Modification From Microelectronics to Biological Materials

This book is an up-to-date review of the most important plasma-based techniques for material modification from microelectronics to biological materials and from fusion plasmas to atmospheric ones. Each its technical chapters is written by long-experienced internationally recognised researchers. The book provides a deep and comprehensive insight into plasma technology and its associated elemental processes and is illustrated throughout with excellent figures and references to complement each section. Although some of the topics covered can be traced back several decades care has been taken to emphasize the most recent findings and expected evolution. The first time the word ‘plasma’ appeared in print in a scientific text related to the study of electrical discharges in gases was 1928 when Irving Langmuir published his article ‘Oscillations in Ionized Gases’. It was the baptism of the predominant state of matter in the known universe (it is estimated that up to 99% of matter is plasma) although not on earth where the conditions of pressure and temperature make normal the states of matter (solid liquid gas) which in global terms are exotic. It is enough to add energy to a solid (in the form of heat or electromagnetic radiation) to go into the liquid state from which gas is obtained through an additional supply of energy. If we continue adding energy to the gas we will partially or totally ionise it and reach a new state of matter plasma made up of free electrons atoms and molecules (electrically neutral particles) and ions (endowed with a positive or a negative electric charge). | Plasma Applications for Material Modification From Microelectronics to Biological Materials
