Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development An Intersubjective Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self Attachment Trauma and Reality

Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development An Intersubjective Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self Attachment Trauma and Reality

Traditionally trauma has been defined as negatively impacting external events with resulting damage. This book puts forth an entirely different thesis: trauma is universal occurring under even the best of circumstances and unavoidably sculpting the very building blocks of character structure. In Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development Dr. Carl Shubs depathologizes the experience of trauma by presenting a listening perspective which helps recognize the presence and effects of traumatic experiences of normal development (TEND) by using a reconstruction of object relations theory. This outlook redefines trauma as the breach in intrapsychic organization of Self Affect and Other (SAO) the three components of object relations units which combine to form intricate and changeable constellations that are no less than the total experience of living in any given moment. Bridging the gap between the trauma and analytic communities as well as integrating intrapsychic and relational frameworks the SAO/ TEND perspective provides a trauma-based band of attunement for attending to all relational encounters including those occurring in therapy. Though targeted to mental health professionals this book will help enable therapists and sophisticated lay readers alike to recognize the impact of relational encounters providing new tools to understand the traumas we have experienced and to minimize the hold they have on us. | Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development An Intersubjective Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self Attachment Trauma and Reality

Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities Terribly and Terrifyingly Normal?

Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities Terribly and Terrifyingly Normal?

The 9/11 attacks as well as the ones in Madrid London Paris and Brussels; the genocides in Nazi Germany Rwanda and Cambodia; the torture in dictatorial regimes; the wars in former Yugoslavia Syria and Iraq and currently in Ukraine; the sexual violence during periods of conflict all make us wonder: why would anyone do something like that? Who are these people? Drawing on 30 years of research in this book Alette Smeulers explores the perpetrators of mass atrocities such as war crimes crimes against humanity genocide and terrorism. Examining questions of why people kill and torture and how mass atrocities can be explained Smeulers presents a typology of perpetrators with different ranks roles and motives. Devoting one chapter to each type of perpetrator the book combines insights from academic research with illustrative case studies of well-known perpetrators from dictators to middlemen to lower ranking officials and terrorists. Their stories are explored in depth as the book examines their behaviour and motivation. Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities thus provides a comprehensive understanding of the causes of extreme mass violence. Such knowledge not only can help the international criminal justice system to be able to attribute blame in a fairer way but can also assist in preventing such atrocities being committed on the current scale. Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities is essential reading for all those interested in war crimes genocide terrorism and mass violence | Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities Terribly and Terrifyingly Normal?

Modeling Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Modeling Sensorineural Hearing Loss

A recent study indicates that 20 million people in the United States have significant sensorineural hearing loss. Approximately 95% of those people have partial losses with varying degrees of residual hearing. These percentages are similar in other developed countries. What changes in the function of the cochlea or inner ear cause such losses? What does the world sound like to the 19 million people with residual hearing? How should we transform sounds to correct for the hearing loss and maximize restoration of normal hearing? Answers to such questions require detailed models of the way that sounds are processed by the nervous system both for listeners with normal hearing and for those with sensorineural hearing loss. This book contains chapters describing the work of 25 different research groups. A great deal of research in recent years has been aimed at obtaining a better physiological description of the altered processes that cause sensorineural hearing loss and a better understanding of transformations that occur in the perception of those sounds that are sufficiently intense that they can still be heard. Efforts to understand these changes in function have lead to a better understanding of normal function as well. This research has been based on rigorous mathematical models computer simulations of mechanical and physiological processes and signal processing simulations of the altered perceptual experience of listeners with sensorineural hearing loss. This book provides examples of all these approaches to modeling sensorineural hearing loss and a summary of the latest research in the field.

Psychology and Gender Dysphoria Feminist and Transgender Perspectives

Psychology and Gender Dysphoria Feminist and Transgender Perspectives

Psychiatry and psychology have a long and highly debated history in relation to gender. In particular they have attracted criticism for policing the boundaries of ‘normal’ gender expression through gender identity diagnoses such as transvestism transsexualism gender identity disorder and gender dysphoria. Drawing on discursive psychology this book traces the historical development of psychiatric constructions of ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ gender expression. It contextualizes the recent reconstruction of gender in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and its criteria for gender dysphoria. This latest diagnosis illustrates the continued disagreement and debate within the profession surrounding gender identity as ‘disordered’. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on the conflicted history between feminist and transgender communities in the changing context of a more trans-positive feminism and the implications of these diagnoses for these distinct but linked communities. Psychology and Gender Dysphoria examines debates and controversies surrounding psychiatric diagnoses and theories related to gender and gender nonconformity by exploring recent research examples of collaborative perspectives and existing feminist and trans texts. As such the book is relevant for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers of gender feminism and critical psychology as well as historical issues within psychiatry. | Psychology and Gender Dysphoria Feminist and Transgender Perspectives

The Mask of Normalcy Social Conformity and its Ambiguities

The Mask of Normalcy Social Conformity and its Ambiguities

Psychologists view well-adjusted behaviour as conformity the ability to navigate relationships and events within a framework of societal rules and regulations. George Serban argues that a better test is how well an individual is able to navigate adverse situations by handling conformity's ambiguities and incongruities. He uses clinical findings and content analysis to explore the interface between social conformity and nonconformist behaviours. The definition of the normal is itself problematic since society's expectations are sometimes controversial arbitrary or equivocal. As a result people who have problems coping with social conformity choose between degrees of nonconformity or hiding under what Serban calls a mask of normalcy. Further complicating matters is that some nonconformist attitudes are now seen as normal supported by governmental policies tacitly favouring moral relativism. A multicultural society is crisscrossed by shades of controversial values and mores. New social codes of correct conduct blur the distinction between true and false right and wrong; and social conflict simmers as a result. What society perceives as well adjusted may even change within a society over time depending on prevailing social values. Some noticeable variations have been within male-female relationships and sexual morality. Serban ultimately concludes that those who have learned how to manipulate social situations are viewed as well adjusted. Those who have not are seen as struggling or maladjusted. | The Mask of Normalcy Social Conformity and its Ambiguities
