Sociolinguistics of the Korean Wave Hallyu and Soft Power

Sociolinguistics of the Korean Wave Hallyu and Soft Power

Samosir and Wee examine how the immensely popular Korean Wave (K-wave) also known as Hallyu is wielded as soft power through the use of communication for persuasion and attraction on the global stage. The Korean Wave refers to the global spread and popularity of South Korean culture particularly its pop music (K-pop) serialised dramas (K-dramas) and films (K-films). Given the South Korean government’s involvement in providing funding and publicity the Korean Wave raises interesting sociolinguistic questions about the relationship between artistry and citizenship the use of social media in facilitating the consumption of cultural products and ultimately the nature of soft power itself. Studies of soft power have tended to come from the field of international relations. This book shows that sociolinguistics actually has a number of tools in its conceptual arsenal – such as indexicality stance taking affect and styling – that can shed light on the Korean Wave as a form of soft power. As the first book-length sociolinguistic analysis of the Korean Wave and soft power this book demonstrates how K-pop K-dramas and K-films have been able to encourage in consumers an anthropological stance towards all things Korean. This volume will be of particular interest to students and scholars in sociolinguistics political science cultural studies and Korean studies. China’s Soft War on Terror Space-Making Processes of Securitization

China’s Soft War on Terror Space-Making Processes of Securitization

This book explores how the Chinese government reasserts its control and management of public spaces as part of its overall counter-terrorism strategy. The work focuses primarily on the banal and alternative forms that China’s ‘war on terror’ takes: the everyday non-military socio-economic and spatio-material. It presents three different cases of control associated with the state’s effort to manage material social and digital public spaces as remedies to terrorism and ethnic unrest in China: the redevelopment project of Kashgar—the ‘home’ of Uyghur culture—from 2001 to 2017; the forging of local partnerships with potential agents (i. e. the local cadres and imams in Xinjiang) as part of the process of implementing counter-terrorism policies; and an online campaign about international terrorism that appeared on Sina Weibo. Using securitization theory as a theoretical framework the book establishes links between human geography and critical security studies and advances the understanding of non-confrontational forms of resistance in China. It also focuses attention on the binary relationship between the securitizing agency of the state and the counter-securitization agency of ‘terrorists’ while also exploring the manner in which other societal forces interact with these processes. This book will be of interest to students of critical terrorism studies Chinese studies human geography and security studies. | China’s Soft War on Terror Space-Making Processes of Securitization

Reinsurance and the Law of Aggregation Event Occurrence Cause

Reinsurance and the Law of Aggregation Event Occurrence Cause

In excess of loss reinsurance the reinsurer covers the amount of a loss exceeding the policy’s deductible but not piercing its cover limit. Accordingly a policy’s quantitative scope of cover is significantly affected by the parties’ agreement of a deductible and a cover limit. Yet the examination of whether a loss has exceeded deductible or cover limit necessitates an educated understanding of what constitutes one loss. In so-called aggregation clauses the parties to (re-)insurance contracts regularly provide that multiple individual losses are to be added together for presenting one loss to the reinsurer when they arise from the same event occurrence catastrophe cause or accident. Aggregation mechanisms are one of the core instruments for structuring reinsurance contracts. This book systematically examines each element of an aggregation mechanism tracing the inconsistent usage of aggregation language in the markets and scrutinizing the tests developed by courts and arbitral tribunals. In doing so it seeks to support insurers reinsurers brokers and lawyers in drafting aggregation clauses and in settling claims. Focusing on an analysis of primary sources particularly judicial decisions the book interprets each judicial decision to describe a system of inter-related rules collating organising and describing the English law of aggregation as applied by the courts and arbitral tribunals. It further draws a comparison between the English position and the corresponding rules in the Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law (PRICL). | Reinsurance and the Law of Aggregation Event Occurrence Cause
