Religious Discourse in Attic Oratory and Politics

Religious Discourse in Attic Oratory and Politics

The book offers a critical investigation of a wide range of features of religious discourse in the transmitted forensic symbouleutic and epideictic orations of the Ten Attic Orators a body of 151 speeches which represents the mature flourishing of the ancient art of public speaking and persuasion. Serafim focuses on how the intersections between such religious discourse and the political legal and civic institutions of classical Athens help to shed new light on polis identity-building and the construction of an imagined community in three institutional contexts – the law court the Assembly and the Boulē: a community that unites its members and defines the ways in which they make decisions. After a full-scale survey of the persistently and recurrently used features of religious discourse in Attic oratory he contextualizes and explains the use of specific patterns of religious discourse in specific oratorical contexts examining the means or restrictions that these contexts generate for the speaker. In doing so he explores the cognitive/emotional and physical/sensory reactions of the speaker and the audience when religious stimuli are provided in orations and how this contributes to the construction of civic and political identity in classical Athens. Religious Discourse in Attic Oratory and Politics will be of interest to anyone working on classical Athens particularly its legal institutions on ancient rhetoric and ancient Greek religion and politics.

Authentic Diversity How to Change the Workplace for Good

Political Discourse as Dialogue A Latin American Perspective

Political Discourse as Dialogue A Latin American Perspective

We are witnessing the collapse of democracies in many parts of the world and a general tendency to the resurgence of right-wing and left-wing populisms led by authoritarian leaders. This book centres on the political dialogue in one of these democracies. The focus is on Venezuela the rich Latin American oil producing country and its transformation from a stable democracy to a very unstable and controversial revolution in which the dialogue has been occupied by only one party for 18 years. The central characters of the book are Hugo Chávez who remained in power for 14 years as the main speaker and controller and the people who either followed or opposed him in Venezuela and other countries. Contrary to critical analyses which are mainly based on social representations that conceive dialogue as implicit or normative this book proposes a dialogue-centred approach which articulates linguistics conversation analysis socio-pragmatics and political science from a critical perspective and offers the theoretical foundations and procedures for analysing micro dialogues between specific persons and the macro social dialogue which unveils the processes of domination and resistance to power. The book will be useful for scholars and students of linguistics media communication studies and political science wishing to learn more about dialogue in political interaction. | Political Discourse as Dialogue A Latin American Perspective

Gender Speech and Audience Reception in Early Modern England

Gender Speech and Audience Reception in Early Modern England

This book makes a significant contribution to recent scholarship on the ways in which women responded to the regulation of their behavior by focusing on representations of women speakers and their audiences in moments Smith identifies as scenes of speech. This new approach examining speech exchanges between a speaker and audience in which both anticipate interact with and respond to each other and each other's expectations demonstrates that the prescriptive process involves a dynamic exchange in which each side plays a role in establishing and contesting the boundaries of acceptable speech for women. Drawing from a wide range of evidence including pamphlets diaries illustrations and plays the book interprets the various and at times contradictory representations and reception of women’s speech that circulated in early modern England. Speech scenes examined within include wives' speech to their husbands in private private speech between women public speech before death and the speech of witches. Looking at scenes of women’s speech from male and female authors Smith argues that these early modern texts illustrate a means through which societal regulations were negotiated and modified. This book will appeal to those with an interest in early modern drama including the playwrights Shakespeare Cary Webster Fletcher and Middleton as well as readers of non-dramatic early modern literary texts. The volume is of particular use for scholars working in the areas of early modern literature and culture women’s history gender studies and performance studies. | Gender Speech and Audience Reception in Early Modern England

Flipped Learning A Guide for Higher Education Faculty

Flipped Learning A Guide for Higher Education Faculty

Flipped learning is an approach to the design and instruction of classes through which with appropriate guidance students gain their first exposure to new concepts and material prior to class thus freeing up time during class for the activities where students typically need the most help such as applications of the basic material and engaging in deeper discussions and creative work with it. While flipped learning has generated a great deal of excitement given the evidence demonstrating its potential to transform students’ learning engagement and metacognitive skills there has up to now been no comprehensive guide to using this teaching approach in higher education. Robert Talbert who has close to a decade’s experience using flipped learning for majors in his discipline in general education courses in large and small sections as well as online courses – and is a frequent workshop presenter and speaker on the topic – offers faculty a practical step-by-step “how-to” to this powerful teaching method. He addresses readers who want to explore this approach to teaching those who have recently embarked on it as well as experienced practitioners balancing an account of research on flipped learning and its theoretical bases with course design concepts to guide them set up courses to use flipped learning effectively tips and case studies of actual classes across various disciplines and practical considerations such as obtaining buy-in from students and getting students to do the pre-class activities. This book is for anyone seeking ways to get students to better learn the content of their course take more responsibility for their work become more self-regulated as learners work harder and smarter during class time and engage positively with course material. As a teaching method flipped learning becomes demonstrably more powerful when adopted across departments. It is an idea that offers the promise of transforming teaching in higher education. | Flipped Learning A Guide for Higher Education Faculty

Bayesian Analysis with R for Drug Development Concepts Algorithms and Case Studies

Bayesian Analysis with R for Drug Development Concepts Algorithms and Case Studies

Drug development is an iterative process. The recent publications of regulatory guidelines further entail a lifecycle approach. Blending data from disparate sources the Bayesian approach provides a flexible framework for drug development. Despite its advantages the uptake of Bayesian methodologies is lagging behind in the field of pharmaceutical development. Written specifically for pharmaceutical practitioners Bayesian Analysis with R for Drug Development: Concepts Algorithms and Case Studies describes a wide range of Bayesian applications to problems throughout pre-clinical clinical and Chemistry Manufacturing and Control (CMC) development. Authored by two seasoned statisticians in the pharmaceutical industry the book provides detailed Bayesian solutions to a broad array of pharmaceutical problems. Features Provides a single source of information on Bayesian statistics for drug development Covers a wide spectrum of pre-clinical clinical and CMC topics Demonstrates proper Bayesian applications using real-life examples Includes easy-to-follow R code with Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo performed in both JAGS and Stan Bayesian software platforms Offers sufficient background for each problem and detailed description of solutions suitable for practitioners with limited Bayesian knowledge Harry Yang Ph. D. is Senior Director and Head of Statistical Sciences at AstraZeneca. He has 24 years of experience across all aspects of drug research and development and extensive global regulatory experiences.
