A Pen and Paper Introduction to Statistics

A Pen and Paper Introduction to Statistics

Statistics is central in the biosciences social sciences and other disciplines yet many students often struggle to learn how to perform statistical tests and to understand how and why statistical tests work. Although there are many approaches to teaching statistics a common framework exists between them: starting with probability and distributions then sampling from distribution and descriptive statistics and later introducing both simple and complex statistical tests typically ending with regression analysis (linear models). This book proposes to reverse the way statistics is taught by starting with the introduction of linear models. Today many statisticians know that the one unifying principle of statistical tests is that most of them are instances of linear models. This teaching method has two advantages: all statistical tests in a course can be presented under the same unifying framework simplifying things; second linear models can be expressed as lines over squared paper replacing any equation with a drawing. This book explains how and why statistics works without using a single equation just lines and squares over grid paper. The reader will have the opportunity to work through the examples and compute sums of squares by just drawing and counting and finally evaluating whether observed differences are statistically significant by using the tables provided. Intended for students scientists and those with little prior knowledge of statistics this book is for all with simple and clear examples computations and drawings helping the reader to not only do statistical tests but also understand statistics. | A Pen and Paper Introduction to Statistics

Designing Quality Authentic Assessments

Designing Quality Authentic Assessments

This book examines the principles and practice of authentic assessment. It seeks to answer the following questions. What is authentic assessment? How is authentic assessment different from 'performance assessment' or 'alternative assessment'? How can authentic assessment support learner-centred education especially when a performance-oriented culture favours pen-and-paper examinations? The book is structured into two major parts. The first 'Principles of authentic assessment design' provides readers with a conceptual explanation of authenticity; the principles for designing quality authentic assessments for valid evidence of student learning; and guidance about how to develop quality rubrics to structure assessment tasks. The second part of the book 'Theory into practice' provides examples developed by teachers to demonstrate an understanding of authentic assessment. The subject areas covered include humanities languages mathematics sciences character and citizenship. Two case studies are discussed to demonstrate how authentic assessment can be used to comprehensively address key learning objectives in a variety of curriculum contexts. This book provides practitioners with concrete examples on how to develop authentic assessment to suit their context and also enhance their students’ learning. The book will also enable teachers to face assessment challenges present in our changing world. Cultural Organizations Networks and Mediators in Contemporary Ibero-America

Cultural Organizations Networks and Mediators in Contemporary Ibero-America

This book proposes an innovative conceptual framework to explore cultural organizations at a multilateral level and cultural mediators as key figures in cultural and institutionalization processes. Specifically it analyzes the role of Ibero-American mediators in the institutionalization of Hispanic and Lusophone cultures in the first half of the 20th century by means of two institutional networks: PEN (the non-governmental writer’s association) and the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation (predecessor to UNESCO). Attempting to combine cultural and global history sociology and literary studies the book uses an analytical focus on intercultural networks and cultural transfer to investigate the multiple activities and roles that these mediators and cultural organizations set in motion. Literature has traditionally studied major figures and important centers of cultural production but other regions and localities also played a crucial role in the development of intellectual cooperation. This book reappraises the place of Ibero-America in international cultural relations and retrieves the lost history of key secondary actors. The book will appeal to scholars from international relations global and cultural history sociology postcolonial Studies world and comparative literature and New Hispanisms.
