GIS Cartography A Guide to Effective Map Design Third Edition

GIS Cartography A Guide to Effective Map Design Third Edition

Since the publication of the bestselling second edition 5 years ago vast and new globally-relevant geographic datasets have become available to cartography practitioners and with this has come the need for new ways to visualize them in maps as well as new challenges in ethically disseminating the visualizations. With new features and significant updates that address these changes this edition remains faithful to the original vision that cartography instruction should be software agnostic. Discussing map design theory and technique rather than map design tools this book focuses on digital cartography and its best practices. This third edition has completely new sections on how to deal with maps that go viral and the ethics therein; new presentation ideas; new features such as amenities climate data and hazards; the new Equal Earth projection; and vector tile design considerations. All chapters are thoroughly updated with new illustrations and new sections for datasets that didn’t exist when the second edition was published as well as new techniques and trends in cartography. New in the third edition: A true textbook written with a friendly style and excellent examples explaining everything from layout design to fonts and colors to specific design considerations for individual feature types to static and dynamic cartography issues. Thoroughly updated with new features such as points of interest climate data hazards and buildings; new projections such as the Equal Earth projection and the Spilhaus projection; and vector tile design considerations such as label placement techniques and tricks for making world-class basemaps. Includes over 70 new map examples that display the latest techniques in cartography. Reflects on new developments in color palettes; visualization patterns; datums; and non-static output media such as animation interaction and large-format cinematic techniques that weren’t available for the second edition. Defines and illustrates new terms that have made their way into the profession over the last few years such as story maps flow maps Dorling cartograms spec sheets bivariate choropleths firefly cartography Tanaka contours and value-by-alpha. In this third edition author Gretchen Peterson takes a don’t let the technology get in the way approach to the presentation focusing on the elements of good design what makes a good map and how to get there rather than specific software tools. She provides a reference that you can thumb through time and again as you create your maps. Copiously illustrated the third edition explores novel concepts that kick-start your pursuit of map-making excellence. The book doesn’t just teach you how to design and create good maps it teaches you how to design and create superior maps. | GIS Cartography A Guide to Effective Map Design Third Edition

Landscape Architecture for Sea Level Rise Innovative Global Solutions

Landscape Architecture for Sea Level Rise Innovative Global Solutions

This book assesses and illustrates innovative and practical world-wide measures for combating sea level rise from the profession of landscape architecture. The work explores how the appropriate mixture of integrated multi-scalar flood protection mechanisms can reduce risks associated with flood events including sea level rise. Because sea level rise is a global issue illustrative case studies performed from the United States Korea Australia New Zealand Thailand Japan China and the Netherlands identify the structural (engineered) non-structural (nature-based) and hybrid mechanisms (mixed) used to combat sea level rise and increase flood resilience. The alternative flood risk reduction mechanisms are extracted and analyzed from each case study to develop and explain a set of design-based typologies to combat sea level rise which can then be applied to help proctor new and existing communities. It is important for those located within the current or future floodplain considering sea level rise and those responsible for land use developmental and population-related activities within these areas to strategically implement a series of integrated constructed and green infrastructure-based flood risk reduction mechanisms to adequately protect threatened areas. As a result this book is beneficial to both academics and practitioners related to multiple design professions such as urban designers urban planners architects real estate developers and landscape architects. | Landscape Architecture for Sea Level Rise Innovative Global Solutions

China's Policy towards the South China Sea When Geopolitics Meets the Law of the Sea

China's Policy towards the South China Sea When Geopolitics Meets the Law of the Sea

This book provides an explanation of Chinese policy towards the South China Sea and argues that this has been sculpted by the changing dynamics of the law of the sea in conjunction with regional geopolitical flux. The past few decades have witnessed a bifurcated trend in China’s management of territorial disputes. Over the years while China gradually calmed and settled most land-border disputes with its neighbors disputes on the ocean frontier continued to simmer in a seething cauldron. China's Policy towards the South China Sea attributes the distinctive path of China’s approach to maritime disputes to a unique factor – the law of the sea (LOS) as the rules of the road in the ocean. By deconstructing the concept of sovereignty and treating the LOS as an evolving regime the book examines how the changing dynamics of the LOS regime have complicated and reshaped the nature and content of sovereign disputes in the ocean regime as well as the options of settlement. Applying the findings to the South China Sea case the author traces the learning curve on which China has embarked to comprehend the complexity of the dispute accordingly and finds that it is the dynamic interaction of the law of the sea regime and the geopolitical conditions that has driven the evolution of China’s South China Sea policy. This book will be of great interest to students of Chinese and Asian politics international law international relations and security studies. | China's Policy towards the South China Sea When Geopolitics Meets the Law of the Sea

Arbitration Concerning the South China Sea Philippines versus China

Arbitration Concerning the South China Sea Philippines versus China

On 22 January 2013 the Republic of the Philippines instituted arbitral proceedings against the People’s Republic of China (PRC) under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) with regard to disputes between the two countries in the South China Sea. The South China Sea Arbitration is a landmark case in international law because of the parties involved the legal questions to be decided and the absence of one of the parties. As revealed in its official statements the PRC will neither accept nor participate in this arbitration nor present written and oral arguments in the tribunal room. Such default of appearance makes applicable certain procedural rules. According to Article 9 of Annex VII the Tribunal before making its Award is obligated to satisfy itself not only that it has jurisdiction over the dispute but also that the claims brought by the Philippines are well-founded in fact and law. Therefore it is necessary for the Tribunal to look into all the claims brought forward by the Philippines and all the disputes constituted by the claims in the procedural phase. The possible arguments the PRC could make should be explored during this process. This book brings together chapters selected from well-established scholars in Asia Europe and North America addressing the issues arising from the South China Sea Arbitration. It contains five easy to read parts: origin and development of the South China Sea dispute; the jurisdiction and admissibility of the case; international adjudication and dispute settlement; legal issues arising from the case such as the legal status of the U-shaped line and islands rocks and low-tide elevations; and the Arbitration case and its impact on regional maritime security. | Arbitration Concerning the South China Sea Philippines versus China

The Shifting Sands of the North Sea Lowlands Literary and Historical Imaginaries

Global seawater levels are rising and the low-lying coasts of the North Sea basin are amongst the most vulnerable in Europe. In our current moment of environmental crisis the North Sea coasts are literary arenas in which the challenges and concerns of the Anthropocene are being played out. This book shows how the fragile landscapes around the North Sea have served as bellwethers for environmental concern both now and in the recent past. It looks at literary sources drawn from the countries around the North Sea (Denmark Germany the Netherlands and England) from the mid-nineteenth century onwards taking them out of their established national and cultural contexts and reframing them in the light of human concern with fast-changing and hazardous environments. The six chapters serve as literary case studies that highlight memories of flood disaster and recovery attempts to engineer the landscape into submission perceptions of the landscape as both local and global and the imagination of the future of our planet. This approach which combines environmental history and ecocriticism shows the importance of cultural artefacts in understandings of and responses to environmental change and advocates for the importance of literary studies in the environmental humanities. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the Environmental Humanities including Eco-criticism and Environmental History as well as anyone studying literature from the Germanic philologies. | The Shifting Sands of the North Sea Lowlands Literary and Historical Imaginaries

Respectability as Moral Map and Public Discourse in the Nineteenth Century

Respectability as Moral Map and Public Discourse in the Nineteenth Century

Despite the fact that respectability is universally recognized as a feature of nineteenth-century society it has seldom been studied as a subject in itself. In this path-breaking book Woodruff D. Smith interprets respectability as a highly significant cultural phenomenon incorporating both a moral imaginary or map and a distinctive discourse. Respectability was constructed in the public spheres of Europe and the Americas and eventually came to be an aspect of social life throughout the world. From its origins in the late eighteenth century it was a conscious response to what were perceived as undesirable aspects of modernity. It became a central feature of concepts of the modern itself and an essential part of the processes that in the twentieth century came to be called modernization and cultural globalization. Respectability – though typically associated with the bourgeoisie – existed independently of any particular social class and strongly affected modern constructions of class in general and of gender. Although not an ideology respectability was overtly embedded in several political discourses especially those of movements such as antislavery which claimed to transcend politics. While it may no longer be a coherent entity in culture and discourse respectability continues to affect contemporary public life through a fragmentary legacy. | Respectability as Moral Map and Public Discourse in the Nineteenth Century

How to Make Maps An Introduction to Theory and Practice of Cartography

How to Make Maps An Introduction to Theory and Practice of Cartography

The goal of How to Make Maps is to equip readers with the foundational knowledge of concepts they need to conceive design and produce maps in a legible clear and coherent manner drawing from both classical and modern theory in cartography. This book is appropriate for graduate and undergraduate students who are beginning a course of study in geospatial sciences or who wish to begin producing their own maps. While the book assumes no a priori knowledge or experience with geospatial software it may also serve GIS analysts and technicians who wish to explore the principles of cartographic design. The first part of the book explores the key decisions behind every map with the aim of providing the reader with a solid foundation in fundamental cartography concepts. Chapters 1 through 3 review foundational mapping concepts and some of the decisions that are a part of every map. This is followed by a discussion of the guiding principles of cartographic design in Chapter 4—how to start thinking about putting a map together in an effective and legible form. Chapter 5 covers map projections the process of converting the curved earth’s surface into a flat representation appropriate for mapping. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the use of text and color respectively. Chapter 8 reviews trends in modern cartography to summarize some of the ways the discipline is changing due to new forms of cartographic media that include 3D representations animated cartography and mobile cartography. Chapter 9 provides a literature review of the scholarship in cartography. The final component of the book shifts to applied technical concepts important to cartographic production covering data quality concepts and the acquisition of geospatial data sources (Chapter 10) and an overview of software applications particularly relevant to modern cartography production: GIS and graphics software (Chapter 11). Chapter 12 concludes the book with examples of real-world cartography projects discussing the planning data collection and design process that lead to the final map products. This book aspires to introduce readers to the foundational concepts—both theoretical and applied—they need to start the actual work of making maps. The accompanying website offers hands-on exercises to guide readers through the production of a map—from conception through to the final version—as well as PowerPoint slides that accompany the text. | How to Make Maps An Introduction to Theory and Practice of Cartography
