Supportive Conversations on Facebook Timelines Discourse Topic Management

Supportive Conversations on Facebook Timelines Discourse Topic Management

The emergence of social networking sites like Facebook and people’s engagement with one another through them is a relatively under-researched area for discourse analysis. The content of the book revolves around Discourse Topic Management which is under the theme of Discourse Analysis. It is written to extend the very limited literature in the area of Discourse Topic especially for the discourse which takes place on social networking sites. This study discusses the characteristics of topical actions employed by English language teachers and their Facebook Friends in managing supportive conversations which take place on Timelines. In addition to employing new strategies enabled by the particular features of the site the teachers and their Friends also creatively adapt the strategies used in face-to-face conversations to manage their online conversations thus contributing to the emergence of unique characteristics of discourse topic management in the context of social networking sites. The book brings together the existing frameworks of Discourse Topic Management which are previously applied in the context of face-to-face conversations and synthesizes the frameworks for a more comprehensive model into examining the conversations which take place on Facebook Timelines. The novelty of this book lies in its synthesized framework the recontextualization of the framework for online conversations and the theoretical extension based on the data analysis presented in each chapter. Since people’s engagement with social networking sites is an emerging behaviour this timely book provides insights into the phenomenon and also proposes a comprehensive analytical framework for other researchers interested in similar contexts. | Supportive Conversations on Facebook Timelines Discourse Topic Management

Dystopia and Economics A Guide to Surviving Everything from the Apocalypse to Zombies

Dystopia and Economics A Guide to Surviving Everything from the Apocalypse to Zombies

Government collapsing? Zombies hunting you down? Everyone you know killed by a global epidemic? Not to worry! Economics holds the keys to survival. Often known as the dismal science it is particularly equipped to reveal order in what seems like chaos. Economists observe human behaviour: what leads us to take action and the subsequent consequences. However the choices made by individuals are not made in isolation; they influence and are influenced by the actions of others. A set of rules even if unwritten guides human behaviour. Foundational economic principles stand firmly in place even when society is breaking down and an understanding of these basic tenets of societies is essential to surviving the end of the world as we know it. In this book the authors draw from popular culture to show economic principles at work in the dystopian societies depicted in The Walking Dead Mad Max: Fury Road The Hunger Games Divergent A Clockwork Orange and Last Man on Earth. In each society its members face resource and social constraints that incentivize particular behaviours and lead to predictable outcomes. How does human behaviour change when resources are severely limited the legal system breaks down or individual freedom is stifled? The examples presented here shed an eerie light on the principles that guide our actions every day. Dystopia and Economics: A Guide to Surviving Everything from the Apocalypse to Zombies provides a user-friendly introduction to economics suitable for a general audience as well as devoted students of the discipline. | Dystopia and Economics A Guide to Surviving Everything from the Apocalypse to Zombies

The Culture of AI Everyday Life and the Digital Revolution

The Culture of AI Everyday Life and the Digital Revolution

In this ground-breaking book Cambridge-trained sociologist Anthony Elliott argues that much of what passes for conventional wisdom about artificial intelligence is either ill-considered or plain wrong. The reason? The AI revolution is not so much about cyborgs and super-robots in the future but rather massive changes in the here-and-now of everyday life. In The Culture of AI Elliott explores how intelligent machines advanced robotics accelerating automation big data and the Internet of Everything impact upon day-to-day life and contemporary societies. With remarkable clarity and insight Elliott’s examination of the reordering of everyday life highlights the centrality of AI to everything we do – from receiving Amazon recommendations to requesting Uber and from getting information from virtual personal assistants to talking with chatbots. The rise of intelligent machines transforms the global economy and threatens jobs but equally there are other major challenges to contemporary societies – although these challenges are unfolding in complex and uneven ways across the globe. The Culture of AI explores technological innovations from industrial robots to softbots and from self-driving cars to military drones – and along the way provides detailed treatments of: The history of AI and the advent of the digital universe; automated technology jobs and employment; the self and private life in times of accelerating machine intelligence; AI and new forms of social interaction; automated vehicles and new warfare; and the future of AI. Written by one of the world’s foremost social theorists The Culture of AI is a major contribution to the field and a provocative reflection on one of the most urgent issues of our time.
