The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell Volume 26 Cold War Fears and Hopes 1950–52

The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell Volume 26 Cold War Fears and Hopes 1950–52

The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell Volume 26 covers a period of transition in Russell's political life between his orthodox and sometimes pugnacious defence of the West in the early post-war and the dissenting advocacy of nuclear disarmament and détente that started in earnest in the mid-1950s. While some of the assembled writings echo harsh prior criticism of Soviet expansionism and dictatorship others register growing qualms about the recklessness of American foreign policy and the baneful effects on civil liberties of anti-communist hysteria inside the United States. Whether continuing to push for western rearmament or highlighting in a more placatory vein the folly of the Cold War's divisions and rival fanaticisms Russell's paramount objective was avoiding a war that threatened global catastrophe. Suspended between fear and hope he expounded his evolving political concerns–and much else besides including autobiographical reflections and typically common-sense guidance for living well–in a constant flow of newspaper and magazine articles letters to editors radio broadcasts and discussions and of special note a Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Russell also completed two lecture tours of the United States (the last of many) as well as a landmark such visit to Australia. All three of these journeys and the textual record they left are examined in depth using manuscript material and unpublished correspondence from the Bertrand Russell Archives at McMaster University which is mined extensively throughout the volume. | The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell Volume 26 Cold War Fears and Hopes 1950–52

Comprehensive Aphasia Test

Comprehensive Aphasia Test

The Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT) is a test for use with people who have acquired aphasia that can be completed over one or two assessment sessions. The test includes a user manual a cognitive screen and language battery and a scoring booklet which are all unchanged since the previous edition and - new to this release - a concise Aphasia Impact Questionnaire which replaces the Disability Questionnaire. The cognitive section assesses people's abilities across a range of task that can affect rehabilitation. Forming the main body of the test the language battery provides a profile of performance across all modalities of language production and comprehension. The Aphasia Impact Questionnaire is a pictorial Patient Reported Outcome Measure which produces both qualitative and quantitative information. It was co-produced with people with aphasia. It supports the person with aphasia to give a subjective rating of how language difficulties identified in the Language Battery affect their daily life enabling first steps towards goal setting. By capturing this information the CAT helps the therapist track changes over the course of recovery and provides a guide to likely outcomes on the basis of an early assessment. The first two sections of the CAT are supported by normative data on people both with and without aphasia and extensive data on reliability and clinical validity. The CAT allows users to: Identify underlying impairments Find where to focus assessments using PALPA and other batteries Ascertain the practical psychological and social impact of aphasia from the perceptive of the person with aphasia Create a profile of strengths and weaknesses to guide therapy. Structured around fully up-to-date models of language assessment from cognitive neuropsychology to patient reported outcome measures test is an indispensable resource for speech and language therapists and researchers. It provides as much information about people's language ability as possible in a relatively brief test designed to be completed in 90-120 minutes. Additional scoring booklets can be ordered in packs of 10 at https://www. routledge. com/Comprehensive-Aphasia-Test-Scoring-Book-pack-of-10/Swinburn-Porter-Howard/p/book/ 9781032128177

Organelle and Molecular Targeting

Organelle and Molecular Targeting

We have surpassed the omics era and are truly in the Age of Molecular Therapeutics. The fast-paced development of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines such as the mRNA vaccines encoding the viral spike protein demonstrated the need for and capability of molecular therapy and nanotechnology-based solutions for drug delivery. In record speed the SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA genome was sequenced and shared with the scientific community allowing the rapid design of molecular therapeutics. The mRNA vaccines exploit the host cell endoplasmic reticulum to produce viral spike proteins for antigen presentation and recognition by the innate and adaptive immune system. Lipid nanoparticles enable the delivery of the fragile degradation-sensitive nucleic acid payloads. Molecular-based therapeutics and nanotechnology solutions continue to drive the scientific and medical response to the COVID-19 pandemic as new mRNA DNA and protein-based vaccines are developed and approved and the emergency use approved vaccines are rapidly manufactured and distributed throughout the globe. The need for molecular therapies and drug delivery solutions is clear and as these therapies progress and become more specialized there will be important advancements in organelle targeting. For example using organelle targeting to direct lipid nanoparticles with mRNA payloads to the endoplasmic reticulum would increase the efficacy of mRNA vaccines reducing the required dose and therefore the biomanufacturing demand. Likewise improving the delivery of DNA therapeutics to the nucleus would improve efficacy. Organelles and molecules have always been drug targets but until recently we have not had the tools or capability to design and develop such highly specific therapeutics. Organelle targeting has far-reaching implications. For example mitochondria are central to both energy production and intrinsic apoptosis. Effectively targeting and manipulating mitochondria has therapeutic applications for diseases such as myopathies cancer neurodegeneration progerias diabetes and the natural aging process. The SARS-CoV-2 vaccines that exploit the endoplasmic reticulum (for mRNA vaccines) and the nucleic translational process (DNA vaccines) attest to the need for organelle and molecular therapeutics. This book covers the status demand and future of organelle- and molecularly targeted therapeutics that are critical to the advancement of modern medicine. Organelle and molecular targeting is the drug design and drug delivery approach of today and the future; understanding this approach is essential for students scientists and clinicians contributing to modern medicine.
