Fundamentals of Civil Engineering An Introduction to the ASCE Body of Knowledge

While the ASCE Body of Knowledge (BOK2) is the codified source for all technical and non-technical information necessary for those seeking to attain licensure in civil engineering recent graduates have notoriously been lacking in the non-technical aspects even as they excel in the technical. Fundamentals of Civil Engineering: An Introduction to the ASCE Body of Knowledge addresses this shortfall and helps budding engineers develop the knowledge skills and attitudes suggested and implied by the BOK2. Written as a resource for all of the non-technical outcomes not specifically covered in the BOK2 it details fundamental aspects of fourteen outcomes addressed in the second edition of the ASCE Body of Knowledge and encourages a broader perspective and understanding of the role of civil engineers in society as well as the reciprocal influence between civil engineering and social evolution. With discussion questions and group activities at the end of each chapter topics covered include humanities and social sciences experimentation sustainability contemporary issues and historical perspectives risk and uncertainty communication public policy globalization leadership and teamwork and professional and ethical responsibilities. Suitable for both current and former students in pursuit of further breadth and depth of knowledge and professional maturity this primer promotes introspection self-evaluation and self-learning. It details those attitudes that are essential to the achievement of personal and professional success and advancement to positions of leadership and encourages an appreciation of the human values that are fundamental to professional practice. | Fundamentals of Civil Engineering An Introduction to the ASCE Body of Knowledge

The Routledge Handbook of Bodily Awareness

The Routledge Handbook of Bodily Awareness

Bodily awareness is one of the most interesting and enigmatic forms of experience. Our earliest and most pervasive form of conscious experience it also arguably remains the most private. Bodily awareness has also long played a central role in the study of the mind and self-consciousness and is fundamental to much current philosophical and psychological research. The Routledge Handbook of Bodily Awareness is an outstanding reference source to this fascinating subject. Comprising over thirty chapters by an international team of contributors the Handbook is divided into seven parts: Epistemology and Metaphysics Historical Issues Body Representation Sensing the Body Dynamics Pathology Interaction Within these sections specific topics covered include bodily ownership personal identity self-consciousness body modelling in robot design body illusions touch proprioception phantom limb syndrome pain eating disorders out-of-body experiences and virtual reality. The handbook features specially commissioned contributions from researchers in a wide array of disciplines whilst being accessible to readers with any disciplinary background. It also includes an interdisciplinary introduction written by the editors tying together the central themes with particular attention to the interaction between conceptual technological and empirical issues. The Routledge Handbook of Bodily Awareness will be of great interest to those in a wide variety of philosophical subdisciplines as well as those in psychology cognitive science sociology and related subjects.

Infectious Diseases and Pathology of Reptiles Color Atlas and Text Diseases and Pathology of Reptiles Volume 1

Infectious Diseases and Pathology of Reptiles Second Edition provides definitive information on every aspect of the anatomy pathophysiology and differential diagnosis of infectious diseases affecting reptiles. It features stunning high-quality color photos of normal anatomy and histology as well as gross light and electron microscopic images of infectious diseases of reptiles. Editor Elliott Jacobson draws on his own photography collection and his wealth of experience spanning over 40 years in the research of infectious diseases and veterinary care of reptiles. Already a comprehensive reference a new volume covering noninfectious diseases of reptiles has now been added to create a two-volume set Diseases and Pathology of Reptiles. Beginning with a thorough review of the biology anatomy and histology of reptiles Volume 1 covers all major systems and provides the most complete single source for color images of reptile histology hematology and cytology. Volume 1 addresses the mechanism of reptile immunology and the response to pathogens and explains how immunological response is key to differential diagnosis. It provides an overview of electron microscopy complete with electron micrographs of reptile pathogens and introduces the necessity of molecular methods for diagnosis. Finally this volume devotes several chapters to the viral bacterial fungal and parasitic diseases known to reptiles and methods for isolating these pathogens. With up-to-the-minute data an array of sharp and high-quality images and a panel of expert contributors this new edition of Infectious Diseases and Pathology of Reptiles is the definitive resource for veterinary pathologists zoo or wildlife veterinarians and the increasing number of private practice veterinarians seeing reptiles kept as exotic pets. It is also ideal reading for veterinary students specializing in exotics candidates for ACZM accreditation and private breeders and hobbyists. | Infectious Diseases and Pathology of Reptiles Color Atlas and Text Diseases and Pathology of Reptiles Volume 1

The Poems of Robert Browning: Volume Five The Ring and the Book Books 1-6

The Poems of Robert Browning: Volume Five The Ring and the Book Books 1-6

The Ring and the Book published serially in 1868–9 is one of the most daring and innovative poems in the English language. The story is based on the trial of an Italian nobleman Guido Franceschini for the murder of his wife Pompilia in Rome in 1698. Browning’s discovery of the ‘old yellow book’ a bundle of legal documents and letters relating to the trial on a second-hand market stall in Florence sparked an imaginative engagement with this sordid tale of domestic cruelty adultery and greed which grew through four years of arduous labour into an epic peopled not by gods and warriors but by concrete recognisably human beings. Fusing the technique of the dramatic monologue the form he had made his own with the grandeur of classical epic and the vivid realism of the modern novel Browning created a unique hybrid form that allowed him not only to bring to life an entire historical period but also to reflect on the process of artistic creation itself – the forging of the golden ‘ring’ of the poem from the ‘pure crude fact’ of its historical original. This edition comprising volumes 5 and 6 in the acclaimed Longman Annotated English Poets edition of Browning’s poems does full justice to the scope and depth of Browning’s achievement. The headnote in volume 5 gives an authoritative account of the poem’s composition publication sources and reception making use of hitherto unpublished letters and textual material. In addition to giving readers help where needed with historical and linguistic comprehension the notes track Browning’s formidable range of allusion from the most erudite to the most vulgar. The appendices in volume 6 present a selection from the original sources a list of variants from extant proofs and key passages from Browning’s fascinating and revealing correspondence with one of the earliest readers of the poem Julia Wedgwood. The aim is to enable readers not just to understand the poem as an object of study but to take pleasure in its abounding intellectual and emotional energies. | The Poems of Robert Browning: Volume Five The Ring and the Book Books 1-6
