Programming for Hybrid Multi/Manycore MPP Systems

Programming for Hybrid Multi/Manycore MPP Systems

Ask not what your compiler can do for you ask what you can do for your compiler. John Levesque Director of Cray’s Supercomputing Centers of ExcellenceThe next decade of computationally intense computing lies with more powerful multi/manycore nodes where processors share a large memory space. These nodes will be the building block for systems that range from a single node workstation up to systems approaching the exaflop regime. The node itself will consist of 10’s to 100’s of MIMD (multiple instruction multiple data) processing units with SIMD (single instruction multiple data) parallel instructions. Since a standard affordable memory architecture will not be able to supply the bandwidth required by these cores new memory organizations will be introduced. These new node architectures will represent a significant challenge to application developers. Programming for Hybrid Multi/Manycore MPP Systems attempts to briefly describe the current state-of-the-art in programming these systems and proposes an approach for developing a performance-portable application that can effectively utilize all of these systems from a single application. The book starts with a strategy for optimizing an application for multi/manycore architectures. It then looks at the three typical architectures covering their advantages and disadvantages. The next section of the book explores the other important component of the target—the compiler. The compiler will ultimately convert the input language to executable code on the target and the book explores how to make the compiler do what we want. The book then talks about gathering runtime statistics from running the application on the important problem sets previously discussed. How best to utilize available memory bandwidth and virtualization is covered next along with hybridization of a program. The last part of the book includes several major applications and examines future hardware advancements and how the application developer may prepare for those advancements.

Godly Seed American Evangelicals Confront Birth Control 1873-1973

Godly Seed American Evangelicals Confront Birth Control 1873-1973

Interview with Allan Carlson In an ironic twist American evangelical leaders are joining mainstream acceptance of contraception. Godly Seed: American Evangelicals Confront Birth Control 1873-1973 examines how mid-twentieth-century evangelical leaders eventually followed the mainstream into a quiet embrace of contraception complemented by a brief acceptance of abortion. It places this change within the context of historic Christian teaching regarding birth control including its origins in the early church and the shift in arguments made by the Reformers of the sixteenth century. The book explores the demographic effects of this transition and asks: did the delay by American evangelicals leaders in accepting birth control have consequences? At the same time many American evangelicals are rethinking their acceptance of birth control even as a majority of the nation's Roman Catholics are rejecting their church's teaching on the practice. Raised within a religious movement that has almost uniformly condemned abortion many young evangelicals have begun to ask whether abortion can be neatly isolated from the issue of contraception. A significant number of evangelical families have over the last several decades rejected the use of birth control and returned decisions regarding family size to God. Given the growth of the evangelical movement this pioneering work will have a large-scale impact. | Godly Seed American Evangelicals Confront Birth Control 1873-1973

The Economics of International Trade and the Environment

The Economics of International Trade and the Environment

Issues related to environmental protection and trade liberalization have moved to the forefront of international policy agendas. The Economics of International Trade and the Environment explores - from an economic standpoint - many of the questions that are germane in increasing our knowledge of environmental policy in the presence of international trade and trade policy in the presence of environmental externalities. Ultimately we must ask What can economic theory tell us about the connections between environmental and trade policy? This book uses the tools of game and microeconomic theory to analyze diverse issues such as: the effects of international trade in waste products on illegal disposal the nature of environmental policy when market structure and plant locations are endogenous and the issue of ecological dumping. The authors apply economic theory to practical settings to ascertain the extent to which this theory can inform policy decisions about problems at the interface of international trade and the environment. Edited by well-known researchers and authors this is the only resource that can serve as an effective guide to the theoretical and empirical literature on international trade and the environment. The Economics of International Trade and the Environment provides comprehensive coverage on a wide variety of topics and contains the most recent contributions in this area and is suitable as a graduate course in Economics and International Trade

Everyday Energy Politics in Central Asia and the Caucasus Citizens’ Needs Entitlements and Struggles for Access

Everyday Energy Politics in Central Asia and the Caucasus Citizens’ Needs Entitlements and Struggles for Access

The perception of Central Asia and its place in the world has come to be shaped by its large oil and gas reserves. Literature on energy in the region has thus largely focused on related geopolitical issues and national policies. However little is known about citizens’ needs within this broader context of commodities that connect the energy networks of China Russia and the West. This multidisciplinary special issue brings together anthropologists economists geographers and political scientists to examine the role of all forms of energy (here: oil gas hydropower and solar power) and their products (especially electricity) in people’s daily lives throughout Central Asia and the Caucasus. The papers in this issue ask how energy is understood as an everyday resource as a necessity and a source of opportunity a challenge or even as an indicator of exclusionary practices. We enquire into the role and views of energy sector workers rural consumers and urban communities and their experiences of energy companies’ and national policies. We further examine the legacy of Soviet and more recent domestic energy policies the environmental impact of energy use as well as the political impact of citizens’ energy grievances. This book was published as a special issue of Central Asian Survey. | Everyday Energy Politics in Central Asia and the Caucasus Citizens’ Needs Entitlements and Struggles for Access

Towards a Transtheoretical Definition of Countertransference Re-visioning the Clinician's Intersubjective Experience

Towards a Transtheoretical Definition of Countertransference Re-visioning the Clinician's Intersubjective Experience

This book explores the analyst’s countertransference experience in clinical settings from a number of theoretical perspectives in order to develop a transtheoretical definition of countertransference. Stemming from an examination of the definition of countertransference itself the author utilizes a philosophical hermeneutic approach to ask how pathological countertransference develops how analysts separate themselves from the patient’s experience and what analysts should do to prevent their countertransference response from interfering with treatment. Through the unique hermeneutic methodology philosophical themes within selected writings are explored as a way of gaining a deeper meaning and understanding of countertransference. By re-interpreting these selected writings in a new light the book develops a transtheoretical definition and approach to countertransference. As such the author offers a timely reassessment of the meaning and understanding of countertransference as it has evolved over the past century going from being considered an obstacle to treatment brought on by the analyst’s unconscious conflicts to being understood as a way of communicating and understanding the patient’s unconscious material. It also provides a unique pathway through various depth psychological therapeutic and theoretical approaches to countertransference foregrounding the significance and therapeutic value of the concept and seeking a new transtheoretical definition. This volume will appeal to scholars and researchers of psychology and mental health. | Towards a Transtheoretical Definition of Countertransference Re-visioning the Clinician's Intersubjective Experience

Shaping Entrepreneurship Research Made as Well as Found

Shaping Entrepreneurship Research Made as Well as Found

Shaping Entrepreneurship Research: Made as Well as Found is a collection of readings designed to support entrepreneurship research. Focused on a worldview in which the future is open-ended and shapeable through human action – i. e. “made” this collection reframes entrepreneurship as a science of the artificial rather than as a natural or social science. It posits an open-ended universe for the making of human artifacts even if large swathes of nature and society are not within the control of the people making them. The book explores the notion of “made” through 25 foundational readings – classics from the history of ideas. Organized into five sections each classic is individually introduced by the editors in one of five chapters written to explain its relevance and significance for a “made” view of entrepreneurship. Readers will benefit from exposure to these classic ideas and ongoing research in a variety of areas that fall somewhat outside the line-of-sight of traditional entrepreneurship research. Both individually and collectively the readings suggest opportunities to ask new questions and develop new ways of framing entrepreneurship research that carry the discussion beyond worlds found to worlds made as well as found. The book is crafted to be valuable to three groups of scholars: young scholars with limited or no access to research infrastructure but with a desire to participate in deep conversations; young scholars with access to research infrastructure who also desire to listen-in on a different kind of conversation; and established entrepreneurship scholars who are contemplating an alternative set of foundational ideas to support their conversations in the discipline. | Shaping Entrepreneurship Research Made as Well as Found
