Shaping Entrepreneurship Research Made as Well as Found

Shaping Entrepreneurship Research Made as Well as Found

Shaping Entrepreneurship Research: Made as Well as Found is a collection of readings designed to support entrepreneurship research. Focused on a worldview in which the future is open-ended and shapeable through human action – i. e. “made” this collection reframes entrepreneurship as a science of the artificial rather than as a natural or social science. It posits an open-ended universe for the making of human artifacts even if large swathes of nature and society are not within the control of the people making them. The book explores the notion of “made” through 25 foundational readings – classics from the history of ideas. Organized into five sections each classic is individually introduced by the editors in one of five chapters written to explain its relevance and significance for a “made” view of entrepreneurship. Readers will benefit from exposure to these classic ideas and ongoing research in a variety of areas that fall somewhat outside the line-of-sight of traditional entrepreneurship research. Both individually and collectively the readings suggest opportunities to ask new questions and develop new ways of framing entrepreneurship research that carry the discussion beyond worlds found to worlds made as well as found. The book is crafted to be valuable to three groups of scholars: young scholars with limited or no access to research infrastructure but with a desire to participate in deep conversations; young scholars with access to research infrastructure who also desire to listen-in on a different kind of conversation; and established entrepreneurship scholars who are contemplating an alternative set of foundational ideas to support their conversations in the discipline. | Shaping Entrepreneurship Research Made as Well as Found

Cannabis as Medicine

Cannabis as Medicine

For hundreds of years cannabis has been used as a therapeutic medicine around the world. Cannabis was an accepted medicine during the second half of the 19th century but its use declined because single agent pain medications were advocated by physicians who demanded standardization of medicines. It was not until 1964 when the chemical structure of THC (delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol) was elucidated and its pharmacological effects began to be understood. Numerous therapeutic effects of cannabis have been reviewed but cannabis-based medicines are still an enigma because of legal issues. Many patients could benefit from cannabinoids terpenoids and flavonoids found in Cannabis sativa L. These patients suffer from medical conditions including chronic pain chronic inflammatory diseases neurological disorders and other debilitating illnesses. As more states are legalizing medical cannabis prescribers need a reliable source which provides clinical information in a succinct format. Learn R As a Language

Learn R As a Language

Learning a computer language like R can be either frustrating fun or boring. Having fun requires challenges that wake up the learner’s curiosity but also provide an emotional reward on overcoming them. This book is designed so that it includes smaller and bigger challenges in what I call playgrounds in the hope that all readers will enjoy their path to R fluency. Fluency in the use of a language is a skill that is acquired through practice and exploration. Although rarely mentioned separately fluency in a computer programming language involves both writing and reading. The parallels between natural and computer languages are many but differences are also important. For students and professionals in the biological sciences humanities and many applied fields recognizing the parallels between R and natural languages should help them feel at home with R. The approach I use is similar to that of a travel guide encouraging exploration and describing the available alternatives and how to reach them. The intention is to guide the reader through the R landscape of 2020 and beyond. Features R as it is currently used Few prescriptive rules—mostly the author’s preferences together with alternatives Explanation of the R grammar emphasizing the R way of doing things Tutoring for programming in the small using scripts The grammar of graphics and the grammar of data described as grammars Examples of data exchange between R and the foreign world using common file formats Coaching for becoming an independent R user capable of both writing original code and solving future challenges What makes this book different from others: Tries to break the ice and help readers from all disciplines feel at home with R Does not make assumptions about what the reader will use R for Attempts to do only one thing well: guide readers into becoming fluent in the R language Pedro J. Aphalo is a PhD graduate from the University of Edinburgh and is currently a lecturer at the University of Helsinki. A plant biologist and agriculture scientist with a passion for data electronics computers and photography in addition to plants Dr. Aphalo has been a user of R for 25 years. He first organized an R course for MSc students 18 years ago and is the author of 13 R packages currently in CRAN. | Learn R As a Language

Development as Swaraj Towards a Sustainable and Equitable Future

Development as Swaraj Towards a Sustainable and Equitable Future

This book offers an in-depth insight into the Indian concept of swaraj-self-rule-both in theory and practice and posits it within the larger context of development. It opens by discussing the limitations of prevailing sustainable development paradigm as well as other heterodox development paradigms in achieving a sustainable and equitable future. Further it constructs development theory around the idea of swaraj based on the writings of M K Gandhi and J C Kumarappa. The swaraj development vision weaves in the morality of the greatest good of all political decentralisation and economic self-sufficiency as important elements to achieve an exploitation-free social order that ensures more control for individuals over their lives. It reveals sustainability and equality as inherent features of such a non-violent social order. The book then provides an introduction to the khadi-handspun and handwoven textile-sector which is taken as a case study to demonstrate the swaraj development approach. The use of this sector helps readers to get a snapshot of the efforts that have been made since the time of Gandhi and Kumarappa towards the attainment of swaraj. Importantly the khadi section highlights the method of translating theory into practice based on the unique three-pronged approach of the swaraj development paradigm. By showcasing how to establish swaraj within the khadi sector the author offers insights into how it can be replicated for attaining a sustainable and equitable world. The book will appeal to scholars and researchers in the fields of Gandhian studies and development studies. | Development as Swaraj Towards a Sustainable and Equitable Future

Phenomenology as Qualitative Research A Critical Analysis of Meaning Attribution

Phenomenology as Qualitative Research A Critical Analysis of Meaning Attribution

Phenomenology originated as a novel way of doing philosophy early in the twentieth century. In the writings of Husserl and Heidegger regarded as its founders it was a non-empirical kind of philosophical enquiry. Although this tradition has continued in a variety of forms ‘phenomenology’ is now also used to denote an empirical form of qualitative research (PQR) especially in health psychology and education. However the methods adopted by researchers in these disciplines have never been subject to detailed critical analysis; nor have the methods advocated by methodological writers who are regularly cited in the research literature. This book examines these methods closely offering a detailed analysis of worked-through examples in three influential textbooks by Giorgi van Manen and Smith Flowers and Larkin. Paley argues that the methods described in these texts are radically under-specified and suggests alternatives to PQR as an approach to qualitative research particularly the use of interview data in the construction of models designed to explain phenomena rather than merely describe or interpret them. This book also analyses and aims to develop the implicit theory of ‘meaning’ found in PQR writings. The author establishes an account of ‘meaning’ as an inference marker and explores the methodological implications of this view. This book evaluates the methods used in phenomenology-as-qualitative-research and formulates a more fully theorised alternative. It will appeal to researchers and students in the areas of health nursing psychology education public health sociology anthropology political science philosophy and logic. | Phenomenology as Qualitative Research A Critical Analysis of Meaning Attribution

Ethics for Bioengineering Scientists Treating Data as Clients

Ethics for Bioengineering Scientists Treating Data as Clients

This book introduces bioengineers and students who must generate and/or report scientific data to the ethical challenges they will face in preserving the integrity of their data. It provides the perspective of reaching ethical decisions via pathways that treat data as clients to whom bioengineering scientists owe a responsibility that is an existential component of their professional identity. The initial chapters lay a historical biological and philosophical foundation for ethics as a human activity and data as a foundation of science. The middle chapters explore ethical challenges in lay engineering medical and bioengineering scientist settings. These chapters focus on micro-ethics individual behavior and cases that showcase the consequences of violating data integrity. Macro-ethics policy is dealt with in the Enrichment sections at the end of the chapters with essay problems and subjects for debates (in a classroom setting). The book can be used for individual study using links in the Enrichment sections to access cases and media presentations like PBS’ Ethics in America. The final chapters explore the impact of bioengineering science ethics on patients via medical product development its regulation by the FDA and the contribution of data integrity violation to product failure. The book was developed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in bioengineering. It also contains much needed material that researchers and academics would find valuable (e. g. FDA survey and lab animal research justification). Introduces an approach to ethical decision making based on treating data as clients Compares the ethics of three professions; engineering medicine and bioengineering Provides five moral theories to choose from for evaluating ethical decisions and includes a procedure for applying them to moral analysis and application of the procedure to example cases. Examines core concepts like autonomy confidentiality conflict of interest and justice Explains the process of developing a medical product under FDA regulation Explores the role of lawyers and the judiciary in product development including intellectual property protection Examines a range of ethical cases from the historical Tuskegee autonomy case to the modern CRISPR-Cas9 patent case.
