'Occultism and the Origins of Psychoanalysis' and 'Sigmund Freud and The Forsyth Case' (2 Volume Set)

'Occultism and the Origins of Psychoanalysis' and 'Sigmund Freud and The Forsyth Case' (2 Volume Set)

Sigmund Freud and The Forsyth Case uses newly discovered primary sources to investigate one of Sigmund Freud’s most mysterious clinical experiences the Forsyth case. Maria Pierri begins with a preliminary illustration of the case its historical context and how it connects to Freud’s interests in ‘thought-transmission’ or telepathy. Sigmund Freud and The Forsyth Case details Pierri’s attempts to recover the lost original case notes which are published here for the first time to identify the patient involved and to set the case into the broader frame of Freud’s work. The book also explores Freud’s further investigations into thought-transmission focusing around a meeting of the Secret Committee in October 1919 and his clinical work with his own daughter Anna. Occultism and the Origins of Psychoanalysis traces the origins of key psychoanalytic ideas back to their roots in hypnosis and the occult. Maria Pierri follows Sigmund Freud’s early interest in ‘thought transmission’ now known as telepathy. Freud’s private investigations led to discussions with other leading figures including Sandor Ferenczi with whom he held a ‘dialogue of the unconsciouses’ and Carl Jung. Freud and Ferenczi’s work assessed how fortune tellers could read the past from a client inspiring their investigations into countertransference the analytic relationship unconscious communication and mother-infant relationality. Pierri clearly links modern psychoanalytic practice with Freud’s interests in the occult using primary sources some of which have never before been published in English. These books will be essential reading for psychoanalysts in practice and in training as well as academics and scholars of psychoanalytic studies Freudian ideas psychoanalytic theory the occult spirituality and the history of psychology. | 'Occultism and the Origins of Psychoanalysis' and 'Sigmund Freud and The Forsyth Case' (2 Volume Set)

British Rock Modernism 1967-1977 The Story of Music Hall in Rock

British Rock Modernism 1967-1977 The Story of Music Hall in Rock

British Rock Modernism 1967-1977 explains how the definitive British rock performers of this epoch aimed not at the youthful rebellion for which they are legendary but at a highly self-conscious project of commenting on the business in which they were engaged. They did so by ironically appropriating the traditional forms of Victorian music hall. Faulk focuses on the mid to late 1960s when British rock bands who had already achieved commercial prominence began to aspire to aesthetic distinction. The book discusses recordings such as the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour album the Kinks' The Village Green Preservation Society and the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols and television films such as the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour and the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus that defined rock's early high art moment. Faulk argues that these 'texts' disclose the primary strategies by which British rock groups mostly comprised of young working and lower middle-class men made their bid for aesthetic merit by sampling music hall sounds. The result was a symbolically charged form whose main purpose was to unsettle the hierarchy that set traditional popular culture above the new medium. Rock groups engaged with the music of the past in order both to demonstrate the comparative vitality of the new form and signify rock's new art status compared to earlier British pop music. The book historicizes punk rock as a later development of earlier British rock rather than a rupture. Unlike earlier groups the Sex Pistols did not appropriate music hall form in an ironic way but the band and their manager Malcolm McLaren were obsessed with the meaning of the past for the present in a distinctly modernist fashion. | British Rock Modernism 1967-1977 The Story of Music Hall in Rock

'Jung's Studies in Astrology' and 'The Astrological World of Jung's 'Liber Novus (2 Volume Set)

'Jung's Studies in Astrology' and 'The Astrological World of Jung's 'Liber Novus (2 Volume Set)

Jung’s Studies in Astrology is an historical survey of his astrological work from the time he began to study the subject. It is based not only on his published writings but also on the correspondence and documents found in his private archives many of which have never previously seen the light of day. Liz Greene addresses with thoroughness and detailed scholarship the nature of Jung’s involvement with astrology: the ancient medieval and modern sources he drew on the individuals from whom he learned his ideas about how and why it worked its religious and philosophical implications and its applications in the treatment of his patients as well as in his own self-understanding. Greene clearly demonstrates that any serious effort to understand the development of Jung’s psychological theories as well as the nature of his world-view needs to involve a thorough exploration of his astrological work. In The Astrological World of Jung’s Liber Novus Liz Greene explores the planetary journey Jung portrayed in this remarkable work and investigates the ways in which he used astrological images and themes as an interpretive lens to help him understand the nature of his visions and the deeper psychological meaning behind them. Greene’s analysis includes a number of mythic and archetypal elements including the stories of Salome Siegfried and Elijah and demonstrates that astrology as Jung understood and worked with it is unquestionably one of the most important foundation stones of analytical psychology and an essential part of understanding his legacy. | 'Jung's Studies in Astrology' and 'The Astrological World of Jung's 'Liber Novus (2 Volume Set)

The Louvre and Versailles The Evolution of the Proto-typical Palace in the Age of Absolutism

The Louvre and Versailles The Evolution of the Proto-typical Palace in the Age of Absolutism

This book traces the evolution of the great palaces of the Louvre and Versailles from Pierre Lescot’s designs for expanding the former in the mid-16th century to the successive grands projets for the transformation of the latter over the course of the 18th century. Detailed architectural analysis is set in the context of the development of the medieval monarchy towards absolutism the significance of Hispano-Burgundian court etiquette as a formative influence on planning and the effect of the French monarchy’s financial incontinence on royal building ambitions. On the basis of exhaustive original research recalling contemporary testimony and re-examining the works themselves the book challenges recent scholarly accounts of the contributions of Claude Perrault and François Mansart to the Louvre and demonstrates the influence of schemes by Italian masters Pietro Cortona and Bernini on Ange-Jacques Gabriel’s designs for rebuilding Versailles. Finally the book looks at the influence of the great French palaces on those seeking to emulate their ambition from Stockholm in the late 17th century to the deliriously opulent late 19th-century palace of Ludwig II of Bavaria at Herrenchiemsee. The book includes a wealth of illustrative material and supporting documents which bring this comprehensive and authoritative text to life. | The Louvre and Versailles The Evolution of the Proto-typical Palace in the Age of Absolutism

The Development of China's Information Resource Industry

The Development of China's Information Resource Industry

The industrialization of information resources has been a growing trend across the world in recent years especially in China where the information resource industry (IRI) has expanded exponentially for over more than a decade. While analysing the development conditions of China's IRI this two-volume set clearly defines the implications and strategic value of the industry summarizes basic IRI theories and clarifies the history of its development and special regional characteristics within the Chinese context. Drawing on the statistics and measurement of various economic indicators of IRI the authors propose four stages of development: a germination period; an initial development period; a subsequent rapid development period; and lastly a steady development period. At the same time the set draws upon various theoretical models such as the “Dynamic Resource Triangle” model the “Information Resource Industrial Symbiosis” model the value chain model and the explanation model of information consumption in order to shed light on IRI's elements and the optimization of its management. In addition the authors present the Information Resource Industry Development Index (IRIDI) to evaluate IRI’s development in different provinces and cities across Mainland China and monitor its dynamics from the point of view of industrial value and the external environment. While the set lays a solid theoretical foundation for the growth of China’s IRI it will also give international readers a clear picture of China's emerging industries in the current era. As an emerging strategic industry in China the information resource industry (IRI) has had and will continue to have a growing impact on economic and social development. Focusing on the special characteristics of IRI policies in China this set provides an in-depth discussion of the major directions methods and paths of development for IRI policies via a comprehensive analysis of the structural organizational promotional policies and policy instruments of China’s IRI. Concentrating on policy instruments the set for the first time provides a systematic all-rounded review of China’s IRI policies that have been released to date and proposes a “China Information Resource Industry Policy Library” comprising six types of IRI policy documents: organizational information regulatory incentives market and social. The whole contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the application of various IRI policies in China and also supports the decision making behind and building of industrial policies. | The Development of China's Information Resource Industry
