Shakespeare's Tempest and Capitalism The Storm of History

Shakespeare's Tempest and Capitalism The Storm of History

In this forceful study Helen C. Scott situates The Tempest within Marxist analyses of the ‘primitive accumulation’ of capital which she suggests help explain the play’s continued and particular resonance. The ‘storm’ of the title refers both to Shakespeare’s Tempest hurtling through time and to Walter Benjamin’s concept of history as a succession of violent catastrophes. Scott begins with an account of the global processes of dispossession—of the peasantry and indigenous populations—accompanying the emergence of capitalism which generated new class relationships new understandings of human subjectivity and new forms of oppression around race gender and disability. Developing a detailed reading of the play at its moment of production in the business of theatre in 1611 Scott then moves gracefully through the global reception history showing how its central thematic concerns and figurative patterns bespeak the upheavals and dispossessions of successive stages of capitalist development. Paying particular attention to moments of social crisis and unearthing a radical political tradition Scott follows the play from its hostile takeover in the Restoration through its revival by the Romantics and consolidation and contestation in the nineteenth century. In the twentieth century transatlantic modernism generated an acutely dystopic Tempest then during the global transformations of the 1960s postcolonial writers permanently associated it with decolonization. At century’s end the play became a vehicle for exploring intersectional oppression and the remarkable ‘Sycorax school’ featured iconoclastic readings by writers such as Abena Busia May Joseph and Sylvia Wynter. Turning to both popular culture and high-profile stage productions in the twenty-first century Scott explores the ramifications and figurative potential of Shakespeare's Tempest for global social and ecological crises today. Sensitive to the play’s original concerns and informed by recent scholarship on performance and reception history as well as disability studies Scott’s moving analysis impels readers towards a fresh understanding of sea-change and metamorphosis as potent symbols for the literal and figurative tempests of capitalism’s old age now threatening ‘the great globe itself. ’ | Shakespeare's Tempest and Capitalism The Storm of History

The Avocado Debate

The Avocado Debate

Whether smashed on toast or hailed as a superfood the avocado has taken the world by storm but what are the environmental and social impacts of this trendy fruit? This book does not seek to demonise the avocado and its many enthusiasts. Instead it will illuminate consumers on the often unseen impacts of foods. A staple of cafes restaurants homes and social media channels demand for the avocado has grown exponentially over the past thirty years. From an everyday crop in South and Central America to a global phenomenon this drastic change in demand has many consequences for people and the planet. As demand grows so does the need for more land with land clearances threatening habitats and biodiversity. As production grows so does global distribution and the impacts that air and sea travel have on the environment. The Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha 1929-1942 A Study of an Indian Peasant Movement

The Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha 1929-1942 A Study of an Indian Peasant Movement

On December 5th 1920 in Patna the Dasnami sannyasi Sahajanand Saraswati encountered Mahatma Gandhi for the first time. Sahajanand was already known in social-reform circles in Bihar as an energetic activist and educator working to promote Bhumihar Brahman identity. Inspired by the Mahatma’s radical reformulation of Indian nationalism ‘the Swami’ (as Sahajanand would soon come to be known) threw himself into nationalist politics and the Indian National Congress. Within a decade moved by the plight of tenant-farmers struggling against excessive rent demands and abusive landlord ‘exactions’ the Swami had spearheaded the formation of the Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha. This organization quickly became the largest organization of its kind in India catapulting the Swami onto the national stage. By the early mid-1930s the Swami had publicly broken with both the Mahatma and the ‘Gandhians’ and had made common cause with the left wing of the Congress. Later as the storm clouds of World War II gathered on the horizon he joined forces with the Forward Bloc and the Communist Party of India. By the time of his death in 1950 the Swami disillusioned with politics had dissociated himself from all parties. This pioneering 1961 study by Walter Hauser tracks the history of the Bihar peasant movement as it both influenced and was buffeted by national and international politics. Hauser offers here a penetrating analysis of the character of the movement and the mind of its leader as he grappled with and gravitated toward Marxism-Leninism in the 1930s and 1940s. Initially written as a Ph. D. dissertation at the University of Chicago Hauser’s path-breaking Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha 1929-1942 is now being published in its entirety for the first time. The volume includes a ‘Foreword’ by one of Hauser’s many students William R. Pinch. Sand Dunes of the Northern Hemisphere: Distribution Formation Migration and Management Volume 2: Characteristics Dynamics and Provenance

Sand Dunes of the Northern Hemisphere: Distribution Formation Migration and Management Volume 2: Characteristics Dynamics and Provenance

Volume 2 of the book ‘Sand Dunes of the Northern Hemisphere’ is sub-titled Characteristics Dynamics and Provenance of Sand Dunes in the Northern Hemisphere. It brings together a vast body of information and insight into sand dune and desert systems from North Asia Central Asia North Africa and the Middle East. Chapters from the Russian Federation include studies on dune systems within the permafrost zone and there is a case study from temperate zone dune system in coastal Japan. Volume 2: Characteristics Dynamics and Provenance of Sand Dunes in the Northern Hemisphere of 16 chapters in three Parts focusses on Saharan Africa Egypt and Middle East and gives attention to sand mobility and encroachment with case studies from a number of countries where these matters are of concern. We also include chapters on the remote dunes in the permafrost zone and in the hyper-arid deserts of Iran. Case studies are used to highlight the characteristics of dunes and their interaction with humans in several widely divergent settings. Volume 2 concludes with some musing on the value of study of the past as key to the future and speculates on what the future might hold in the light of a warmer and drier Earth and a rise in sea level that threaten large tracts of low-lying land with marine incursions and destruction from storm surge. PART 4 Sand Mobility and Encroachment The seven chapters in this Part examine the real-world impact of sand encroachment and dune migration on people and their economic activities and the health welfare and financial implications related to destruction of infrastructure including human habitations. PART 5 Sand Dune Landscapes Distribution Formation and Management Seven Case studies from several geographic regions in Africa the Middle East north-east Asia are presented here to demonstrate the underlying mechanisms in dune formation and the diverse approaches to their management. Human impacts such as sand mining tourism development combine with natural forces like climate variability to challenge the realization of an optimum management strategy. PART 6 Concluding Thoughts: Coping with an Unknown Future from a Little-known Past The two chapters in Part 6 have special roles. We are privileged to publish new research findings that are summarized here in Chapter 38 from extensive and detailed work conducted in the Kyzyl Kum and Karakum sand seas of Central Asia. There is a strong belief that further study of the little-known past such as revealed in this study could unlock clues as to what a future Earth might look like. This leads on to speculation in Chapter 39 about the implications of what we already know about global change (not only climate change) and the impact of the Anthropocene on the dune systems both inland and coastal. Sea level rise marine incursions and an increase in extreme weather events will affect dune systems and sand seas on the Northern Hemisphere (and beyond). | Sand Dunes of the Northern Hemisphere: Distribution Formation Migration and Management Volume 2: Characteristics Dynamics and Provenance
