The Component A Personal Odyssey towards Another Normal

The Component A Personal Odyssey towards Another Normal

The Component: A Personal Odyssey towards Another Normal is the Oosterhuis' personal account of four decades of architectural and societal thinking designing building and theorizing. It is an orchestrated yet non-linear series of subjects all leading toward the creation of a parallel world called Another Normal. Another Normal is as of now a hypothetical parallel world. Nomadic international citizens are the inhabitants of Another Normal. Urged by the climate crisis the food energy and water nexus and the COVID-19 pandemic Another Normal demonstrates the inevitable data-driven techno-social architecture of the physically built environment and the metaverse. Besides robotic production on demand of almost anything – when where and as needed – Oosterhuis' proposes a dozen strategies that run in parallel to establish Another Normal among others: ubiquitous basic income global birthright to own a generous piece of land distributed production of healthy food clean energy and drinking water ownership of private data and personal avatars in the Web 3. 0 autonomous electronic transportation ubiquitous shared responsibility for clean production and waste treatment techniques ubiquitous home delivery working from anywhere for any period of time and decentralized real-time peer to peer banking. The organic real and the synthetic hyper-real co-evolve naturally in Another Normal where a mix of strong and simple legislative planning and design rules create complexity diversity fairness and equality. | The Component A Personal Odyssey towards Another Normal

Stabilization as the New Normal in International Interventions Low Expectations?

Stabilization as the New Normal in International Interventions Low Expectations?

Stabilization as the New Normal in International Interventions provides the first comprehensive analysis of stabilization which constitutes the new reference point for international intervention in unruly parts of the Global South. The notion of ‘stabilization’ and the practice of ‘stability operations’ experienced a revival over the last decade. The United Nations the European Union NATO as well as most member states of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development have embraced these terms in their foreign policy bureaucracies. The general disillusionment with the achievements of large-scale peacebuilding operations in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq as well as the failures of the so-called Arab Springs contributed to the success of this new discourse. Yet while widely mentioned and endorsed stabilization is rarely defined. This volume identifies common elements to stabilization doctrines and examines how they are applied in practice. It dissects how stabilization emerged and unfolds how different actors adopt it and for what purposes and how it is linked to the broader security and development discourses. Stabilization as the New Normal in International Interventions will be of great interest to scholars of Peacebuilding International Intervention and International Relations more generally. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of Ethnopolitics. | Stabilization as the New Normal in International Interventions Low Expectations?

Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development An Intersubjective Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self Attachment Trauma and Reality

Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development An Intersubjective Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self Attachment Trauma and Reality

Traditionally trauma has been defined as negatively impacting external events with resulting damage. This book puts forth an entirely different thesis: trauma is universal occurring under even the best of circumstances and unavoidably sculpting the very building blocks of character structure. In Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development Dr. Carl Shubs depathologizes the experience of trauma by presenting a listening perspective which helps recognize the presence and effects of traumatic experiences of normal development (TEND) by using a reconstruction of object relations theory. This outlook redefines trauma as the breach in intrapsychic organization of Self Affect and Other (SAO) the three components of object relations units which combine to form intricate and changeable constellations that are no less than the total experience of living in any given moment. Bridging the gap between the trauma and analytic communities as well as integrating intrapsychic and relational frameworks the SAO/ TEND perspective provides a trauma-based band of attunement for attending to all relational encounters including those occurring in therapy. Though targeted to mental health professionals this book will help enable therapists and sophisticated lay readers alike to recognize the impact of relational encounters providing new tools to understand the traumas we have experienced and to minimize the hold they have on us. | Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development An Intersubjective Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self Attachment Trauma and Reality

Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities Terribly and Terrifyingly Normal?

Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities Terribly and Terrifyingly Normal?

The 9/11 attacks as well as the ones in Madrid London Paris and Brussels; the genocides in Nazi Germany Rwanda and Cambodia; the torture in dictatorial regimes; the wars in former Yugoslavia Syria and Iraq and currently in Ukraine; the sexual violence during periods of conflict all make us wonder: why would anyone do something like that? Who are these people? Drawing on 30 years of research in this book Alette Smeulers explores the perpetrators of mass atrocities such as war crimes crimes against humanity genocide and terrorism. Examining questions of why people kill and torture and how mass atrocities can be explained Smeulers presents a typology of perpetrators with different ranks roles and motives. Devoting one chapter to each type of perpetrator the book combines insights from academic research with illustrative case studies of well-known perpetrators from dictators to middlemen to lower ranking officials and terrorists. Their stories are explored in depth as the book examines their behaviour and motivation. Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities thus provides a comprehensive understanding of the causes of extreme mass violence. Such knowledge not only can help the international criminal justice system to be able to attribute blame in a fairer way but can also assist in preventing such atrocities being committed on the current scale. Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities is essential reading for all those interested in war crimes genocide terrorism and mass violence | Perpetrators of Mass Atrocities Terribly and Terrifyingly Normal?

Re-Write A Trauma Workbook of Creative Writing and Recovery in Our New Normal

Attachment theory-based treatments including depth psychology somatic psychology holistic therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are becoming even more popular and desired by clinicians health systems and the patients they care for. Up until recently cognitive behavioral therapy and medication management were the mainstays for trauma-informed care although we are witnessing a demand for a more somatic holistic and therefore deeper level of treatment to target attachment injury and change/re-write the trauma narrative. This book provides the response and tools to meet this current need. Due to the pandemic lockdowns and significant changes in our stability the economy sense of belonging and community there is a heightened level of triggering which has resulted in multifactorial trauma responses. Genetic Influences on Neural and Behavioral Functions

Modeling Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Modeling Sensorineural Hearing Loss

A recent study indicates that 20 million people in the United States have significant sensorineural hearing loss. Approximately 95% of those people have partial losses with varying degrees of residual hearing. These percentages are similar in other developed countries. What changes in the function of the cochlea or inner ear cause such losses? What does the world sound like to the 19 million people with residual hearing? How should we transform sounds to correct for the hearing loss and maximize restoration of normal hearing? Answers to such questions require detailed models of the way that sounds are processed by the nervous system both for listeners with normal hearing and for those with sensorineural hearing loss. This book contains chapters describing the work of 25 different research groups. A great deal of research in recent years has been aimed at obtaining a better physiological description of the altered processes that cause sensorineural hearing loss and a better understanding of transformations that occur in the perception of those sounds that are sufficiently intense that they can still be heard. Efforts to understand these changes in function have lead to a better understanding of normal function as well. This research has been based on rigorous mathematical models computer simulations of mechanical and physiological processes and signal processing simulations of the altered perceptual experience of listeners with sensorineural hearing loss. This book provides examples of all these approaches to modeling sensorineural hearing loss and a summary of the latest research in the field.

The Other 23 Hours Child Care Work with Emotionally Disturbed Children in a Therapeutic Milieu

The Other 23 Hours Child Care Work with Emotionally Disturbed Children in a Therapeutic Milieu

Among other revolutionary developments of today's world is tie so-called knowledge explosion. So much is being written so fast about so many things that it is becoming well nigh irretrievable. One consequently can never be sure that he knows what there is to know about many kinds of phenomena or types of problems existing in the modern world due to the chance that something exists in written form that simply cannot be found so bulky is the load of literature. The common idea that only the sick child and never the well needs special emotional supports and helps from the adult is simply an error. For the well child is not immune from pile-ups of severe emotional intensity when overwhelmed by confusion and conflicts from within. Certainly the normal kid can be expected to handle such crises either from within or without better than his sick peer on the average but that does not mean always; and the critical issue for the well child is: is he ready at the time they hit? If not he needs quite unmistakably emotional first aid from the adult - parent teacher camp counselor (or what have you) - who is in charge of his life at that moment. The reader will find that what the authors describe in The Other 23 Hours as the everyday requirement diet as far as child handling is concerned for their disturbed children is transferable to the normal crises of normal childhood. | The Other 23 Hours Child Care Work with Emotionally Disturbed Children in a Therapeutic Milieu
