The Broken Apple New York City in the 1980's

The Broken Apple New York City in the 1980's

On the brink of bankruptcy in the 1970s New York City has been restored as a center of economic and cultural vitality in the 1980s. But it has also become an increasingly brutal place where incivility reigns drugs lace the streets and crime is so pervasive that most New Yorkers now consider it a permanent fixture like gray skies and impossible traffic. What is it that continues to draw people to this city of contradictions?Born and educated in New York Herbert London knows this city of dreams as few do. The Broken Apple is based on his keen observations of New York's social political and cultural life over the critical decade of the 1980s. London examines the city's continuing failures including a city administration unable to meet the most basic citizen needs or to assure safety and security. He sees schools that have become mean-spirited with teachers unable to teach administrators unable to maintain order and students unable to learn. He describes the new slaves of New York as those in search of a place to live in a city where housing is in shorter supply than in any other major city in the nation. London asks why despite all this everything is bigger than life in New York and finds the answer in New York's role as the nation's communications hub and the measuring rod by which other cities are judged. London writes with knowledgeable affection about this very special place where the mundane is freely converted into the metaphorical. His book is an excursion a guide to what is good what is bad and what is awful in the city. It is a montage of the years of Mayor Koch the period many have described as the city's fin de siecle. But it is also a perscriptive book pointing out what can be done in practical ways to improve life. The Broken Apple will be of interest to urban specialists as well as those for whom New York is an aspiration or a reality. Like the city itself the book has something for everyone from visions of political corruption to acts of redemption. Above all it captures the pulsating rhythm of this unique city | The Broken Apple New York City in the 1980's

Disruptive Leadership Apple and the Technology of Caring Deeply-Nine Keys to Organizational Excellence and Global Impact

Disruptive Leadership Apple and the Technology of Caring Deeply-Nine Keys to Organizational Excellence and Global Impact

Disruptive leadership is a topic generating intense interest. Companies all over the world are trying to upend their industry through innovative products and services. Becoming a disruptive organization however is easier said than done. Even more difficult is being a company that continually disrupts. Is it possible to discern a code for how companies can achieve this? In this highly readable and engaging book a disruptive leadership framework is proposed in which caring deeply is placed at the center of the model. By turning care into a focal point a triphasic model is proposed that moves from the personal sphere (individual) to the corporate arena (organizational) and then to the global stage (impact). Nine keys are identified along this path for how companies can realize organizational excellence. While care may seem like a soft concept in the rough and tumble world of business it is argued how it is actually an inspired manner for providing direction structure and know-how that leads to powerful outcomes. Apple is profiled as a leading example of leveraging what is termed the technology of caring deeply. Other companies such as Nike IKEA Zappos Starbucks are also profiled. Finally a leadership canvas is provided to help activate the lessons shared in the book. | Disruptive Leadership Apple and the Technology of Caring Deeply-Nine Keys to Organizational Excellence and Global Impact

Intelligence Oversight in Times of Transnational Impunity Who Will Watch the Watchers?

Intelligence Oversight in Times of Transnational Impunity Who Will Watch the Watchers?

This book adopts a critical lens to look at the workings of Western intelligence and intelligence oversight over time and space. Largely confined to the sub-field of intelligence studies scholarly engagements with intelligence oversight have typically downplayed the violence carried out by secretive agencies. These studies have often served to justify weak oversight structures and promoted only marginal adaptations of policy frameworks in the wake of intelligence scandals. The essays gathered in this volume challenge the prevailing doxa in the academic field adopting a critical lens to look at the workings of intelligence oversight in Europe and North America. Through chapters spanning across multiple disciplines – political sociology history and law – the book aims to recast intelligence oversight as acting in symbiosis with the legitimisation of the state’s secret violence and the enactment of impunity showing how intelligence actors practically navigate the legal and political constraints created by oversight frameworks and practices for instance by developing transnational networks of interdependence. The book also explores inventive legal steps and human rights mechanisms aimed at bridging some of the most serious gaps in existing frameworks drawing inspiration from recent policy developments in the international struggle against torture. This book will be of much interest to students of intelligence studies sociology security studies and international relations.
